World champion calls for Manny Pacquiao showdown after comeback draw
Welterweight world champion Rolando 'Rolly' Romero has welcomed a fight with Manny Pacquiao following the Filipino legend's impressive return to the ring. Pacquiao made his comeback at the age of 46 after a four-year absence on Saturday night as he battled to a majority draw with Mario Barrios in their WBC world title clash. Pacquiao's advisor Sean Gibbons claimed his man should have been declared the winner but played down the chances of a rematch after accusing Barrios of going into his shell during the fight. He mentioned Romero as a potential next foe for Pacquiao in the wake of his upset win over Ryan Garcia in May, and the newly crowned WBA titlist is fully on board. 'A Hall of Famer on my resume, who wouldn't want that? That's the easiest way to get into the Hall of Fame, right?' Romero told Boxing Scene when asked about facing Pacquiao. 'We can do it. Everything has to make sense. It's going to be a fan favourite. That makes sense right there.' Pacquiao would not bring a belt to the table if he fought Romero after falling agonisingly short in his bid to regain welterweight gold. But Romero feels he should have got his hand raised and wants to test himself against an all-time great, while insisting that money would not be his main motivation for taking the fight. 'It was a close fight, regardless – not to take anything away from Mario Barrios,' Romero added. 'But I personally saw Pacquiao winning. 'A lot of people had Pacquiao winning. Barrios only clearly won the last three rounds. I feel like Pacquiao was winning the others, stealing some of them with these bursting moments to close rounds. 'It's not about money. Everyone's chasing all that. … I'm not a person who boxes for money, and I think I've proven that enough times.'

Ben Askren's wife admits he was ‘too close' to dying ‘a few times' as ex-UFC star leaves hospital after eight weeks
BEN ASKREN'S wife admits he was 'too close' to dying after the former UFC star left hospital. Askren, 41, was rushed to the ER last month with a severe case of pneumonia. 3 3 3 The UFC legend was forced to undergo a double lung transplant. And Askren revealed 12 days ago that he 'died four times' on the operating table. The former welterweight star had been in hospital for eight whole weeks as he recovered from surgery. But Askren has now been released back home after a gruelling time away. He appeared with wife Amy to give fans an update on his condition. And Askren's other half revealed that he had been 'too close' to passing away throughout his ordeal. Askren first said: 'What's up guys? Day 59, I'm out. 'That was a long journey and it's not over because I still can't really walk, gotta re-teach myself to do that among many other things. 'I guess I can make light of it because it was me… and I don't really remember it, but Amy, how close was I to dying?' Wife Amy replied: 'Too close, a few times.' Askren added: 'Hopefully I'm not in this situation again for a really, really long time. I plan on living a while.' Askren's emotional message came a week after he opened up on his lungs getting 'stolen.' He said: 'I'm gonna plead guilty, I felt bad for myself one time. 'And that doesn't do anyone any good. 'Man, I never smoked one cigarette.' Never smoked any weed, why did my lungs get stolen from me? 'Why isn't this happening to someone who smokes? Then I realised, it happened. I can be bitter and angry, I could whine and cry, but that's not going to help anybody. 'I am where I am now and I'm going to move forward the best that I can.'

Jorge Mata via unanimous decision (100-90 x2, 98-92) We will also live blog the co-main event between Sebastian Fundora and Tim Tszyu below. Sebastian Fundora vs. Tim Tszyu Walkout: Let's lock in! Tim Tszyu is walking out to 'Desperado' and donning a glittering black robe. Let's just hope he avoids all the step in, Muay Thai-like elbows this fight. Now Sebastian Fundora is walking out. It's always shocking to see the praying mantis that is 'The Towering Inferno' walk out and think he's a 155'er. Prefight: Jimmy Lennon Jr. is now announcing the two fighters. Voice smooth as silk, as usual. This fight was wild to take on 12 days notice. Going to be interesting to see how Tszyu deals with the length of Fundora. Tszyu gets his announcement and now it's Fundora's turn. Fundora is the tallest ever super welterweight champion. Fair amount of pop from the crowd for Fundora as well. Let's get it in. Round 1: Fundora is working the jab and Tszyu swinging for the fences already. Tszyu has a fair read on the distance early. Fundora is falling short with the jabs. Tszyu is also looking to dip on the outside for the right hand up the middle against the southpaw Fundora. BIG KNOCKDOWN FROM FUNDORA! Catches Tszyu trying to shift to the outside with a big left cross and Tszyu beats the count. Fundora is not pressing the pace too much and Tszyu lands a good left over the top. Tszyu doesn't look to terrified after the flash knockdown. MMA Fighting scores this round 10-8 Fundora (10-8 Fundora) Round 2: Fundora is out this round pressing with the jab and cross. Tszyu is trying to fight off the back foot which will be disaster for him. Now Fundora is fine pot shooting Tszyu. He catches Tszyu around the guard and stuns him again. Tszyu is covering up. Fundora backs off and Tszyu lands a big left that snaps Fundora's head to the side. Tszyu is struggling to get to the inside of Fundora, who is using his jab well for once. Tszyu doesn't have the head movement to deal with Fundora's length, especially after being buzzed twice in two rounds. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Fundora (20-17 Fundora) Round 3: Fundora stepping on the lead foot of Tszyu, savvy stuff. Tszyu lands a right from underneath and shoves Fundora. He's clearly stronger, more of that. Tszyu literally punches Fundora's right thigh. Now Tszyu is doing a good job covering the jab with his lead hand. He's having more success getting in and landing to the body (and thigh, lol). Tszyu leaned to his left too much and Fundora lands another left hand that gets a pop from the crowd. Tszyu has stopped worrying about the lead hand battle and Fundora is marching forward again. Tszyu and his coaches have some good ideas but it looks like he lacks the discipline to keep the plan in place. Close round. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Fundora (30-26 Fundora) Round 4: Tszyu is back to the high guard that he's had no success with. Tszyu is on auto pilot now. Tszyu goes cross to the body, left hook high and Fundora comes over the top, punishing Tszyu for having audacity. Tszyu is stuck against the ropes again this round. Tszyu is getting pot-shotted again. Tszyu is now winging in the right, Fundora landing 3 punches to Tszyu's one. Fundora got a bit lazy and Tszyu lands another big right over the top. He can't seem to hurt Fundora. Now Tszyu has Fundora's nose open again. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Fundora (40-35 Fundora) Round 5: Much more success for Tszyu early. Fundora is not jabbing as much and Tszyu is coming back with big shots high and to the body. 2⁄3 through the round and Fundora decides to jab again. Tszyu decides to try to fight the lead hand again and find the outside angle. Tszyu threw a dangerous leaping left hook that he got away with. Fundora is ending the round strong, putting Tszyu in the corner. Tszyu finally banks a round. MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Tszyu (58-45 Fundora) Round 6: Fundora comes out and commands the center of the ring. Tszyu is setting up his left high by throwing to the body first. Fundora is now on the back foot, trying to land volume on Tszyu. Tszyu is fighting much less chaotic. It's serving him well. He just can't get too complacent. A good right hand from Fundora draws a reaction from the crowd. Tszyu slips to the outside and lands a nice right up the pop. Despite Fundora's volume, this is another Tszyu round. Is he mounting a comeback? MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Tszyu (67-55 Fundora) Round 7: Tim Tszyu has yet to go back to hand fighting. Fundora opens the round landing a bit heavier. He's trying to close out Tszyu's comeback. Fundora is reaching bad on the body shots from Tszyu and Tszyu is trying to crack that chin. Every time Tszyu gets his high guard back up, Fundora begins to march him back to the ropes. The two get in a phone booth and Tszyu lands a massive right. They are now fighting in the pocket and it's all action! A big left from Tszyu. Fundora is starting to clinch up! Tszyu just had his best round! He's playing a dangerous game, yet an entertaining one! MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Tszyu (76-65 Fundora) They just called the fight in the corner! My mind is blown! Something must have happened. This is insane, Tszyu was on an incredible comeback. The announcers are saying he was out on his feet. What a round, this has been a letdown of a finish for two great fighters. Official decision: Sebastian Fundora defeats Tim Tszyu via corner's stoppage in round seven. Postfight: Tszyu is up first. 'He's one tough motherf*****.' He seems in good spirits and calls Fundora the best fighter in the division. Tim Tszyu is obviously upset but he's taking the loss in stride. Now over to Fundora. Fundora is crediting his size for his win and wants to start 'bullying these guys.' He continues, 'I looked at myself in the mirror and said, 'Oh wow, I have reach.' Fundora is dry and he throws it out to Pacquiao and gets the crowd ready for Pac-man. Floyd Mayweather, Conor Benn: Who's next for Manny Pacquiao after Mario Barrios draw?
Manny Pacquiao almost completed the dream comeback against Mario Barrios but was held to a majority decision draw in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Pacquiao had been out of boxing for four years and challenged for Barrios's WBC welterweight title. The legendary Filipino impressed with his speed and power at 46 years old, reminding the world how he became one of the greats. For those worried that this fight may have been a one-off, Pacquiao said this was not the end of his boxing journey. Pacquiao said at the post-fight press conference: 'Don't worry. The 'Pac Man' is back, and the journey will continue.' So, after such an impressive performance and with fuel still in the tank, what options lie ahead for the Filipino icon? Mario Barrios rematch After such a close fight, a rematch would be an enticing proposition for the fans. In their bout this past weekend, Pacquiao was ahead on two out of three judges' scorecards, but lost the last three rounds, which cost him a historic win. Pacquiao said he would like a rematch and that he would have a longer training camp headed into it. He was forced to have an eight-week camp because of his electoral campaign in the Philippines. Pacquiao said: "I need to continue my training for longer going into a championship fight. Because of the election, I started late, but it's OK. Of course, I'd like a rematch. I want to leave a legacy and make the Filipino people proud.' Barrios gave Pacquiao his due respect and also said he would love to do it again. Barrios said: 'He's still strong as hell, and his timing is real. He's still a very awkward fighter to try and figure out. He added on the rematch: 'I'll do the rematch. Absolutely. This was huge for boxing. I'd love to do it again.' Conor Benn Rumours of a fight between Conor Benn and Pacquiao have been circulating since last year. The pair shared a face-off in Riyadh during the build-up to Anthony Joshua vs Francis Ngannou – sparking speculation over a welterweight clash between them. Benn has since gone on to fight Chris Eubank Jr, losing a unanimous decision at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April. A rematch between Benn and Eubank Jr looks set for the autumn, but speaking to Sky Sports, Benn revealed he would be open to a fight with Pacquiao or Barrios if the rematch doesn't materialise. Benn said: 'He's past his sell-by date, but he's still a legend – one of the greatest of all time – so either or there's options. Benn still holds top five rankings with the WBC and WBA at welterweight, and a fight with Pacquiao would help boost his world title hopes, if he returns to 147lbs after his rematch with Chris Eubank. However, Pacquiao's manager Sean Gibbons said that the Filipino boxing legend wants to fight again before the end of the year, and with the Eubank Jr rematch looking to be in in the final quarter of 2025, it would be difficult for Benn to squeeze in another fight. It might not be next, but it is a fight that is on the radar of both men, and if Pacquiao can get a rematch and beat Barrios, Benn will be at the front of the queue with the WBC. Floyd Mayweather After a successful comeback, proving he still has what it takes to compete at the world level, Pacquiao has revenge on his mind. He and Floyd Mayweather shared a fierce rivalry that culminated in a fight in 2015 that was one of the most lucrative in boxing history, albeit a tad late. Mayweather beat Pacquiao via unanimous decision to seemingly put an end to their rivalry. But with Pacquiao now an active boxer again, he wants to reignite their feud and fight one more time. Pacquiao said after his fight with Barrios: 'If [Mayweather] comes out of retirement and signs the contract, we'll fight.' He concluded: 'Let's fight again if he wants, I'm active now.' Mayweather, now 48, has been retired from professional boxing since 2017 after he came back to fight Conor McGregor, but stays active in the gym and has had a handful of exhibition bouts. With Mayweather still in shape and Pacquiao back in the professional ranks, a rematch is a genuine possibility, and perhaps the promise of a big payday can draw Mayweather back out of retirement. Other Welterweights Pacquiao's manager has said they are aiming for bigger names than Barrios in his next fight. Gibbons said: "He's a nice guy [Barrios] and I like the kid, but Manny deserves a bigger name.' He continued: "There are fighters like Gervonta 'Tank' Davis and [Rolando] 'Rolly' Romero out there." 'Rolly' Romero has yet to confirm his next opponent after his upset victory over Ryan Garcia in May. He currently holds the WBA 'Regular' title and would be an intriguing match-up for Pacquiao. Elsewhere in the welterweight division, Brian Norman Jr and Devin Haney have had a fight confirmed for November 22 on the Ring IV card in Riyadh. Haney is coming off a lacklustre win over an ageing Jose Ramirez, and Norman Jr is in the form of his life after scoring a devastating knockout of Jin Sasaki in Japan and currently holds the WBO welterweight title. If Pacquiao was looking for a more robust challenge and another shot at a world title, the winner of this fight is a real option.
