Award-winning stylist Danny Pato receives Order Of Merit for services to hairdressing

He's won multiple hairstyling awards over the years, but Danny Pato says his New Zealand Order of Merit is the best yet. Viva has waxed lyrical for years that hairstylist Danny Pato has needed additional room on his mantelpiece to house his numerous awards, but his most recent accolade shines brighter than any silver trophy. Flanked by five of his closest friends, Danny was invited to Government House in Auckland last Thursday where he was presented with the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to hairdressing by Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro. Danny is the first hairstylist in New Zealand history to receive such a prestigious honour. The announcement that Danny would be recognised as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit was revealed in late December as part of the New Year Honours 2025 list. For more than two decades, Danny has cemented his reputation as a hairstylist with creative flair and expertise with wigs and hair pieces, having received 14 awards throughout his career. He's collaborated with notable fashion magazines both locally and globally (including Viva), toured the international Fashion Week circuit, and established a loyal fan base at D&M Hair Design, the Auckland-based salon he co-founded with husband Ryland Wood. Below, Danny reflects on this milestone moment and shares how he hopes that his most recent award inspires the next generation of hairstylists. Photo / Supplied ASHLEIGH COMETTI: Congratulations on receiving your Member of the New Zealand Order Of Merit, Danny. How did you feel when you first found out you would be receiving this special honour? Advertisement Advertise with NZME. DANNY PATO: Thank you so much. I found out late last year – they check with you in advance if you're going to accept the honour, so I received a letter in the post. I had to keep it confidential but inside I was overwhelmed and proud. But it really hit home when a One News interview aired on New Year's Eve and I could finally talk about it. Now that I've experienced it, I feel so incredibly proud, honoured and grateful. Danny (centre) invited a handful of friends to attend the Investiture Ceremony, including footwear designer Kathryn Wilson (left) and brand strategist Liam Taylor (right). Photo / Supplied AC: How does this most recent award differ to those you've received in the past? DP: It's particularly heart-warming to be recognised by the State and Crown. I'm the first person in the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to hairdressing, so it feels like I've opened up a pathway for our industry. Last year, I was the 2024 inductee into Australian Hair Industry Hall of Fame, which felt similar in a way – a recognition encompassing my whole career – but the MNZM coming from the Government feels really special, to be appreciated and accepted by the country. Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro poses with Danny during the Investiture Ceremony at Government House. Photo / Supplied AC: What was the Investiture Ceremony like last Thursday, when you received the award from Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro? DP: It was very formal, emotional and a once in a lifetime experience. We were asked to dress our best, so I wore a custom-made Crane Brothers suit. There were eight other inductees and their guests invited to Government House for the ceremony and high tea. Advertisement Advertise with NZME. Hearing the stories of the other inductees, what all of these courageous Kiwis had done for their different communities was inspiring, and made me grateful to be a New Zealander. I had to stand for the Governor-General, while a citation about my contributions and achievements was read out. It took me back to being a young boy in the Mediterranean with five sisters playing with their hair, and my journey through to doing overseas shows, winning 14 global awards and winning NZ Hairdresser of the Year eight times in a row. Danny shares a quiet moment with Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro. Photo / Supplied I then shared a private moment with the Governor-General; she thanked me on behalf of all Kiwis for putting New Zealand on the international hairdressing map. She said what impressed her most was giving back through the charity projects I'd instigated over the years for cancer research, victim support, end of life care and disadvantaged kids. It really was a special moment for me. Then we had high tea – seriously the fanciest and most delicious high tea I'd ever had. Danny, right, and his husband, Ryland Wood. Photo / Supplied AC: How did you celebrate afterwards? DP: My guests – husband Ryland Wood, business partner Michael Sisaengrath, and best friends Kathryn Wilson, Liam Taylor and Jen Cuttance - took me to Soul Bar for dinner in all of our finery. The divine Liv Carter, manager at Soul, gave us the most beautiful table in the sunset, where we ate delicious seafood and sipped G.H. Mumm RSRV champagne… we had a fabulous celebration. Champagne was flowing at Soul Bar for Danny and his friends following the ceremony. Photo / Supplied AC: What are you most looking forward to for the rest of the year? Any other awards you have your eye on? DP: I am very driven to create new work – any awards are only a result of the work itself. So it's no surprise that I'm about to shoot my next collection. I've got a busy winter ahead, hair directing a few New Zealand Fashion Week shows and heading over to Australia a couple of times to do hairdressing shows and seminars. I love what I do, so I will just keep on going – this medal is a recognition of my passion. Nicole Kidman strips down and wigs up for racy mag shoot

Nicole Kidman's love for wigs knows no bounds. The Oscar-winning actress fronted Allure's May 2025 cover, looking almost unrecognisable in not one but three vibrant copper wigs — or perhaps the same piece in progressively shorter cuts. In some pictures, Kidman is clad in a fuchsia floor-sweeping Roberto Cavalli gown with a cheek-grazing chop featuring uneven bangs. In other snaps from the photo shoot, she trades the short hairdo for two other, longer wig with similarly undone bangs, one which hits right above her shoulders and the other grazing her chest. Kidman modelled one of the colourful hair pieces with Balenciaga's oversized white T-shirt featuring three photos of herself. The tee, which is part of the brand's series featuring ambassadors including Kim Kardashian, Michelle Yeoh and more, retails for $US825. Her hair was courtesy of hairstylist Evanie Frausto, per his Instagram post. 'Loveeee hair is giving fifth element,' one person commented, referring to the iconic bright orange hair on Leeloo (played by actress Milla Jovovich) in the 1997 film, Fifth Element. Another added, 'everything about this hair is perfect omg' Earlier this month, Kidman caused quite the stir on the Met Gala 2025 red carpet, posing for photographers in a two-tone pixie hairstyle. But, as it turns out, she didn't actually cut her tresses — the short haircut was, you guessed it, a wig. She put the speculations to rest in a new interview with Channel Seven's Sunrise. 'Everyone's like, 'Did you chop your hair off?' I'm like, 'No, I did not,'' Kidman said in the video. She also switched up her hair for the second season of Nine Perfect Strangers, as Kidman's character, wellness guru Masha Dmitrichenko, sports an icy blond shoulder-skimming style. While the A-list actress is known for her love of faux hair, she had a recent snafu while in Cannes when eagle-eyed fans spotted some of her real hair peeking out from the front of the wig in a tone that didn't match. We're wigging out over her recent hair changes.

Nicole Kidman wigs out with TWO different hairpieces for unrecognizable new shoot after recent mishap

Nicole Kidman looked nearly unrecognizable as she posed up a storm in two different wigs for her latest Allure interview which was published on Thursday. The Moulin Rouge actress, 57 - who recently broke her silence on wearing wigs - stunned as she appeared on the cover for the publication and discussed a number of topics, such as grief and aging. The star wowed in a reddish-orange wig that had bangs which fell down onto her forehead as well as strands that flowed down past her shoulders. Kidman donned a strapless, black Balenciaga top and high-waisted black leggings that clung to her frame. In other images snapped by photographer Dan Beleiu for the outlet, she also opted for a shorter red bob with bangs while wearing a purple Robert Cavalli dress. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. In other images for the outlet, she also opted for a shorter red bob with bangs while wearing a purple Robert Cavalli dress The ensemble contained a thigh-high slit on the left that offered a glimpse at the sleek purple heels Nicole additionally wore for the photo shoot. The Australian-born actress, still rocking her long fringe wig, later modeled a printed bandeau top from Schiaparelli and a matching miniskirt. Kidman slipped into a pair of closed-toed, black pumps and accessorized the look with dangly earrings and a chunky gold bracelet. It comes not long after the star suffered a wig mishap while making an appearance at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier this month. While walking the red carpet at glitzy events, she donned a blonde hairpiece - but the wig cap was visible and in another instance, the wig itself was off center. During an appearance on Channel Seven's Sunrise this week, Nicole opened up about opting for wigs. 'As you know, I love changing my hair,' the Big Little Lies star expressed, before bringing up the short pixie cut she chose for the 2025 Met Gala in NYC this month. While some fans initially believed that the star was simply unveiling her natural hair, it was soon revealed that it had also been a wig. 'For the Met Gala, everyone was questioning if I had chopped my hair off. But no, I didn't.' During her interview with Danielle Pergament for her new cover story for Allure for its May 2025 issue, Kidman reflected on getting older. When questioned if aging has been difficult, the actress candidly replied: 'Yes. I've always been a future person, and suddenly you go, "Oh." It's coming to terms with the idea that you have no control over the future.' She continued, 'Probably that's to do with losing people very, very suddenly. I have more time behind me than ahead. 'That shift in the ratio becomes a big thing…. You're just always going, "What is all this?" The existential questions. Who are we? Why are we here?"' The Oscar winner is preparing to celebrate her 58th birthday next month on June 20. Nicole also had a discussion about coping with grief following the passing of her mother last year in September. 'Losing my mother changed every part of me,' she admitted to the outlet, revealing that they would talk to each other multiple times a week. The star explained that her mother's death still feels 'so raw' and added she is still 'on the journey of grief, the year of magical thinking.' The beauty has children of her own and is mom to Sunday, 16, and Faith, 14, whom she shares with husband Keith Urban. During her past marriage to actor Tom Cruise, the former couple also adopted Bella, 32, and Connor, 30. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, Kidman gave insight to her loved ones. 'My husband is a massive part of who I am, and my daughters. My daughters are huge, huge contributors to things in my life, and they open my eyes to things.' Nicole has been keeping busy and recently starred in the second season of the Hulu thriller series Nine Perfect Strangers, which she also executive produces. Other cast members in the new season - which began airing this week on Wednesday - include Henry Golding, Annie Murphy, Christine Baranski, Murray Bartlett, Mark Strong and Lena Olin. The premise of the show is: 'Nine stressed city dwellers visit a boutique health-and-wellness resort that promises healing and transformation. The resort's director is a woman on a mission to reinvigorate their tired minds and bodies,' per IMDB. During an interview with ABC's On The Red Carpet, the actress reflected on the latest season and her own character Masha. 'It's just such a rich story, which lends itself to many different reinventions, and Masha herself is a reinvention every time,' Kidman expressed. 'I'm in the middle of it all, but I get to shine a light on everybody else who's in it, and this time around, it was this extraordinary cast.' While season one took place in Los Angeles, the setting for season two has changed to the Austrian Alps. The second season of Nine Perfect Strangers consists of eight episodes - with the final set to release on Hulu on July 2.

As Nicole Kidman suffers shocking hair blunder at Cannes, here are all celebrities you never knew wore VERY lifelike wigs - including Keira Knightley and Stacey Solomon

It's no secret that constantly changing up your hair can have a big toll on hair health - especially for celebrities who are constantly dying and styling their tresses for events. Recently, Nicole Kidman hit headlines after sporting a wig to her year's Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, which was strikingly different to her naturally curly red hair. The 57-year-old actress, who was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, has previously said that she's opted for headpieces for numerous film roles, claiming her real strands are too delicate to withstand numerous hairstyles and colours. But she has now started wearing them to events, seemingly in the hopes for it to be a subtle addition to add volume to her strawberry blonde locks. However, Nicole suffered a blunder when her mesh wig cap became visible as she posed on the red carpet despite her real hair being woven into it during the 2025 Kering Women in Motion Award event. The mother-of-four is not the only star who has looked to covertly cover their thinning tresses over the years. Media personalities such as Katie Price and Stacey Solomon have opted to wear natural-looking wigs for red-carpets and TV appearances. In fact, their manes looked so convincing, that fans were shocked when they eventually divulged that their hair was fake. Keira Knightley even described how bleaching and changing her mane to fit different roles caused hair loss, revealing that she had to start wearing compelling-looking wigs for films that she starred in. Katie Price The former glamour model, 46, said she suffered drastic hair loss following the birth of her five children, Harvey, Junior, Princess Jett, and Bunny. She noticed that her hair was starting to thin out, which she believed to be as a result of numerous colour treatments coupled with the stress of parenthood. Katie went on TV show Steph's Packed Lunch in 2021 and admitted she has since resorted to wearing wigs on a regular basis in a bid to restore her shattered confidence. She said: 'I love to change my hair every day. One day I'm blonde, the next brunette. But many people might not realise this isn't my real hair. 'Me and wigs have a relationship. I absolutely love them. These days it doesn't matter if you wear a wig or not, who cares? You can have so much fun with wigs.' Hoping to break the stigma surrounding wigs, Katie insisted they were essential in helping her overcome the inevitable self-consciousness that can be caused by hair loss. She added: 'Wearing wigs isn't just a fashion choice. Like millions of women I've experienced hair loss. 'When I started modelling I had really long hair and started colouring it. I had kids and started balding, had extensions, but do you know what, I have to give my hair a rest.' The TV personality also revealed the extent of her hair loss by showing off an exposed patch of skin above her right ear. Katie added: 'Hair is very important, it's your identity. For me it is a confidence thing. 'Losing your hair can be traumatic, whatever the reason. It could be genetic, stress related or the side effects of cancer treatments like chemotherapy. I'm going to be wearing wigs all the time and showing them off.' Keira Knightley The actress, 40, said has been relying on wigs for many years as her job requires her to dye her hair to fit different roles. She had a short blonde bob in Bend It Like Beckham, a dirty blonde shoulder-length hair cut in Love Actually and wavy brunette locks in Pride and Prejudice. Kiera told Instyle UK in 2016: 'I have dyed my hair virtually every colour imaginable for different films. It got so bad that my hair literally began to fall out of my head.' The Pirates of the Caribbean star said that she was even set big boxes of products for female baldness and said that she had 'no idea' why she was gifted it. Kiera told The Cut: 'I wear wigs for films. Which is a great thing and has saved my hair, because when you are on a film set and they are doing your hair everyday and dying it a million different colours, it does tend to fall out.' Stacey Solomon The mother-of-five said she likes wearing wigs to cover up her grey hairs without having to constantly dye it and to help conceal broken strands. She revealed to her fans that she is partial to wearing a wig in 2018 when she uploaded a video of her washing the fake hair on Instagram. Stacey shampooed the wig in the bath using her knee and she couldn't stop laughing when she realised it looked like a person without a face. She said at the time: 'I thought my wig needs a wash and I thought I'll bring her in the bath with me,' as her followers expressed their shocked that she wore a wig. Stacey also wears the hairpiece to red carpet events such as the National Television Awards (NTAs). She filmed herself ripping off her long blonde tresses which were glued to her head in a candid video, showing her followers all the work that really goes into polishing her appearance for a big evening out. The former X-Factor star said years of after of bleaching and styling has meant that her natural tresses 'are ruined'. Stacey previously told The Sun: 'After years of bleaching, tonging, blow-drying and straightening, my natural hair is completely ruined. 'People always warned me not to dye my hair too much or use too much heat but I ignored their advice. I always wanted to go blonder, straighter, slicker. The result? Wiry, broken strands and a psoriasis-ridden scalp. Stress causes flare-ups and it's so damn itchy.' Stacey said that the only way she can get her natural hair back is to stop styling it, adding that it would be 'impossible' not to touch it. She added: 'My roots are 50 per cent ash brown, 50 per cent grey. I'm in my late 20s and it's so depressing. I don't want to look really old.' The TV personality spent £1,000 on a blonde wig made from human hair that she named Suze, labelling it as an 'investment' that would last at least a decade. Katy Perry The singer, 40, has been rocking wigs since she her first couple of albums, especially her 2010 hit song California Gurls. The music video saw her change her hair a whopping four times from a lilac wig to a sapphire wig, brunette pigtails and her signature black fringed bouncy blow-dry. So it's therefore no secret that Katy likes to don the occasional hairpiece every now and then. In 2021, she ditched her platinum tresses in favour of a black wig for the American Idol episode that she starred in. Katy was also interviewed by Jimmy Kimmel wearing her black hair and joked that 'everything is fake' after revealing she was, again, wearing wig which was tucked behind her blonde strands. Last April, the mother-of-one posted that she was getting her raven-black hair cut short into a bob again, mirroring the look she used to wear in her heyday. But after fans commented that they were getting 'flashbacks' over the hairstyle, Katy then went on to reveal that she was wearing a wig. She later said on Instagram: 'You guys had a lot of strong feelings about my haircut. 'Let's see that energy for KP6, 'cause this is just a wig.' Vicky Pattison The Geordie Shore personality, 37, said that she loves bond and clip-in extensions but said that constantly having them in her hair can take its toll on the health of her strands. Vicky has previously uploaded Instagram images of herself donning an array of different hairstyles over the years. In 2020, the broadcaster showcased a sleek new bob haircut in a bid to copy Victoria Beckham's Posh Spice hairdo. However, she joked that she looked more like Edna from the Incredibles. A year later, Vicky temporarily traded in her blonde locks for a curly raven-haired look - a drastic change from her natural hairstyle. She wrote: 'Curly Sue Coming through…. Ok, so this wig makes me miss my dark hair.' The reality TV star also shared a video in the same year saying that she had been working hard to get her hair 'as healthy and strong as it could be' again. She gave her natural tresses a break by donning various wigs, allowing her natural hair to grow underneath. Kylie Jenner The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star, 27, was a big fan of wigs in her 'King Kylie' era in the mid-2010s. Every week, the youngest Jenner sister would seemingly have a new hairstyle every week, from bubble-gum blue hair to pink braids and even sage green. Kylie certainly differentiated herself from her model sister Kendall, who has opted for relatively tame hairstyles and colours in comparison to her younger sibling. The mother-of-two even believes that she started the trend of wearing wigs She told Marie Claire in 2016: 'I started wigs, and now everyone is wearing wigs. Kim [Kardashian] just used my wig guy last night...I just do whatever I want to do, and people will follow.' It's believed that Kylie has even influenced celebrities such as Chloe Ferry to start wearing wigs as the Geordie Shore star was often compared to her in 2017. Jesy Nelson The former Little Mix band member, 33, is another celebrity who has loved wearing wigs over the years to switch up her style without harming her locks. In 2020, Jesy - who has naturally curly brunette hair - uploaded an image of herself sporting a long straight platinum blonde wig. In 2021, she released the music video to her song Boyz featuring Nicki Minaj and had a different look in every shot. This included long red tresses with braids, brown sleek straight hair, and chocolate-permed hair with hints of blonde. Over the years, she has never tried to hide the fact that she steps out in different headpieces, as she filmed herself trying on different looks in 2022. The first wig, which Jesy tried on was long white straight hair, while the second was voluminous brunette curls with blonde highlights. This came after she shortly revealed her real tresses after ditching the hair extensions and wigs, captioning the photo: 'Natural hair is finally healthy again'. Chloe Ferry The Geordie Shore star, 29, is a natural brunette but has extensively dyed her hair blonde throughout the years. The constant bleaching and extensions damaged her mane and she was forced to turn to wearing wigs to cover up her ruined tresses. In 2019, when she was 23, Chloe stepped out with a friend and images showed her fried, matted yellow hair. She wore her blonde locks loose and styled in a side parting, but as she turned away the damage was clear to see on the back of her head. The reality TV star has since turned to wigs to disguise the damage over the years, including a blonde wig shortly after the damage to her hair was revealed, a long curly red hairpiece and a short choppy brunette bob. Chloe even launched wigs via her beauty line Chloe Ferry Cosmetics, where she is currently selling blonde, pink and purple wigs for upwards of £35.

Nicole Kidman breaks her silence on wearing wigs and reveals how she REALLY achieved her Met Gala look

Nicole Kidman has broken her silence on wearing wigs to achieve different looks. The Australian actress, 57, admitted on Channel Seven 's Sunrise, she 'loves changing her hair' and uses hairpieces to achieve new looks. 'As you know, I love changing my hair,' she said. Nicole also addressed her edgy short hairstyle that she debuted at the 2025 Met Gala earlier this month. 'For the Met Gala, everyone was questioning if I had chopped my hair off. But no, I didn't,' she added. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Nicole unveiled her radical makeover at one of the biggest fashion events of the year. The actress wore an eye-catching Balenciaga gown to the Met Gala, yet it was her cropped, slicked-back cut and wavy fringe which had everybody talking. The long ponytail she sported at a concert by pop star Charli XCX only the day before had disappeared, replaced by a short style which appeared soft and blonde from the front, but dark and edgy at the back. When she stepped out at the Metropolitan Museum of Art sporting a slick pixie cut, it delighted her admirers. Scores of fans shared their thoughts on the new look on X - and while it was unclear if Nicole was wearing a short wig or showing her true locks, many were praising the star for ditching her common use of hairpieces and showing her 'real' hair. 'Omg Nicole Kidman on the MET stairs… fiercely gorgeous. Love the short hair on this lady!' wrote one. Another said: 'Wow! Nicole Kidman looked stunning. Love love love her new hair style'.Someone else said: 'NICOLE KIDMAN SHORT HAIR THE WORLD IS HEALING' while one more wrote: 'Obsessed with Nicole Kidman's hair cut'. Yet another pondered: 'Oh snap, when was the last time we've seen Nicole Kidman's real hair?' while one more agreed: 'Nicole Kidman with her real hair today'. The Babygirl star's hairdresser is Adir Abergel, one of Hollywood's most sought-after stylists. Aberge said on Instagram the inspiration was 'a tailored short cut' - a reference to the theme of the New York event this year, 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style'. Many fans rushed to Instagram to claim the cut is the best hair Nicole 'has ever had' - though some argued that, for most women of a similar age, such an edgy style might be hard to pull off. It would seem it is Nicole's year for transformations after she previously stunned fans earlier this year. She underwent a dramatic change for the highly anticipated second season of Nine Perfect Strangers. The Oscar-winning actress, known for her timeless beauty and signature red locks, was barely recognisable in the newly released promotional photos. Nicole reprises her role as the enigmatic wellness guru Masha - and underwent a striking makeover to get into character. For the role she said goodbye to her trademark strawberry blonde curls and wore a blonde bob wig for an icy look. The mother-of-four—consistently ranked among the world's highest-paid actresses—shares two adopted children, Bella and Connor, with her ex-husband Tom Cruise. She also shares two teenage daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, with her husband Keith.
