Scotland grants offshore consent for 100MW Salamander wind farm

The Scottish government has awarded Section 36 consent and associated marine licences to the 100MW Salamander wind farm in a significant step forward in its commitment to the floating offshore wind industry. The project is being jointly developed by Ørsted, the Simply Blue Group and Subsea7. The consent gives developers the go-ahead to construct and operate the floating array. Positioned 35km offshore Peterhead in northeast Scotland, the Salamander offshore wind farm will harness floating offshore wind technologies to generate zero-carbon electricity. The project, with an accompanying 100MW onshore battery system, will contribute to the Scottish government's target of 11GW of installed offshore wind as well as the UK government's target of 5GW of operational floating offshore wind by 2030. The endorsement from Marine Directorate Licensing and Operations (MD-LOT), along with contributions from stakeholders such as NatureScot, now sanctioned by Scottish ministers, strengthens local supply chains. Following the onshore planning permission in principle award for on-site works in March 2025, the latest consent assures that project timelines are maintained towards deployment before year-end 2030. The team will now focus on securing an option agreement with Crown Estate Scotland and subsequently aim to obtain a contract for difference (CfD) agreement. Project director Hugh Yendole stated: 'Coming hot on the heels of the onshore consent, this is yet another major achievement by the project team. While we worked proactively with MD-LOT to achieve offshore consent – including compensation plans - within the 12-month target window, the award within 15 months reflects our team's expertise, passion, commitment and seamless teamwork.' Salamander signed an exclusivity agreement in May 2023 as part of Crown Estate Scotland's innovation and targeted oil and gas (INTOG) leasing round. With a focus on floating supply chain development, the Salamander wind farm will enable the local supply chain to prepare for commercial-scale opportunities in Scotland. The project will de-risk floating wind technologies and integration with battery storage systems to address challenges such as grid balancing and co-located generation for future commercial projects in Scotland and beyond. Hong Kong to impose new emission caps on local power plants from 2030

Hong Kong environmental authorities will impose new emission caps on power plants from 2030 in a bid to further improve local air quality, with a major electricity firm pledging to import more zero-carbon energy from mainland China. Advertisement The Environment and Ecology Bureau said on Friday that it would further cut the electricity sector's annual emission allowances for sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and respirable suspended particulates (RSPs). In five years, the allowances would be reduced by 19 per cent, 25 per cent and 14 per cent, respectively, it said. The reductions will translate into 2,302 tonnes of sulphur dioxide, 8,350 tonnes of nitrogen oxides and 317 tonnes of RSPs, according to the 10th Technical Memorandum for the Allocation of Emission Allowances, which outlines the emission caps. CATL's EV battery plants to become carbon neutral this year, founder says

Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the world's largest electric vehicle (EV) battery maker, expects to become carbon neutral this year, burnishing its image as a leading developer of zero-carbon solutions. 'This year, all CATL battery factories will achieve carbon neutrality,' Robin Zeng Yuqun, the firm's billionaire founder and chairman, said before the company's debut on the Hong Kong stock exchange on Tuesday. 'This listing signifies our deeper integration into the global capital markets and marks a new milestone in our mission to drive the global zero-carbon economy.' He said the company would offer its technologies and solutions to its partners globally to promote the transition of conventional sectors like steel, cement and chemicals to clean energy. CATL announced in April 2023 its plan to achieve carbon neutrality in its core operations by 2025 and across the battery value chain by 2035. The company's Zhaoqing plant was the first to be certified as a zero-carbon factory in 2022. It has since achieved this status across a total of four factories. The company's overall carbon emissions fell 34 per cent year on year to 2.1 million tons in 2023, according to its ESG report released in September.
