Ruben Amorim: Bruno Fernandes wants to stay an Man United
Ruben Amorim said that it would be a waste if Bruno Fernandes left for Saudi Arabia and claimed the Manchester United captain wants to stay even though Al-Hilal have offered him a £700,000-a-week deal. It is understood that Fernandes has been mulling over a proposal from the Saudi Pro League club during United's post-season tour to Southeast Asia, which ended on Friday with a 3-1 win over Hong Kong. Fernandes's agent, Miguel Pinho, held talks with Al-Hilal representatives at the Four Seasons Hotel in Riyadh on Thursday night and has since explained the terms of the offer to his client, who would stand to more than double his present wage of almost £300,000 per week. Al-Hilal want Fernandes to decide his future over the weekend as they would like the Portuguese to play for them in the Club World Cup, which begins on June 14, but Amorim thinks that his captain is set to stay because he is convinced that the team will bounce back from their disappointing season. 'I don't think so,' Amorim, the United head coach, said when asked if Fernandes was leaving. 'I don't know for sure — nobody knows — but I don't think so. He is seeing us changing some actions to change all the things and I think he wants to stay. He is saying no to a lot of things. But he shows that he wants to win. 'He is really hungry. He is really good. He needs to be in the best league in the world.' It would be a huge blow to United if they lost Fernandes, who won the club's player-of-the-season award for a record-equalling fourth time this year. The 30-year-old playmaker, who scored 19 goals and set up 19 more last season, sought assurances from the club about their willingness to invest in the squad before he signed his last contract, which expires in two years' time. 'Of course, in a lot of games he is frustrated, but he knows what we are doing,' Amorim, 40, said. 'The feeling I get every time I speak with him is that he wants to continue for sure with Man United.' United have already got the ball rolling on their summer recruitment drive, agreeing a £62.5million deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers for Matheus Cunha, but it appears that they have missed out on their first-choice striker target, Liam Delap, who looks set to move to Chelsea instead. United could do with signing at least one wing-back, a midfielder and possibly a goalkeeper to increase their chances of finishing in the top four next season. 'I have a clear idea what we want [to do in the market],' Amorim said. 'As you know, we are a bit limited and we can't do it all in one summer. But there is a clear picture for what we want.' Incredibly downbeat after the 1-0 loss to Spurs in Bilbao last week, Fernandes admitted for the first time that he could depart after five-and-a-half years at the club. 'I've always said I will be here until the club says to me that it's time to go,' he said. 'I'm eager to do more, to be able to bring the club to the great days. On the day that the club thinks that I'm too much, or it's time to part ways, football is like this, you never know it. 'But I've always said it and I keep my word in the same way. If the club thinks it's time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it's what it is, and football sometimes is like this.' Meanwhile, United have announced that Andreas Georgson, the first-team coach brought in by Amorim's predecessor Erik ten Hag, will leave the club this summer. Amorim arrived with five of his own coaches, one of whom took Georgson's former role as set piece coach, when he replaced Ten Hag last November.
