'I'm not going to be ‘Mr I Apologise' — Kagiso Rabada
Kagiso Rabada felt there was no need to elaborate on the circumstances that saw him test positive for a 'recreational drug', nor to offer any further apology. Rabada, who served a one-month suspension in April, added on Friday he would be addressing his Proteas teammates in the next few days because he 'owes it to them'. It was the first time Rabada had spoken publicly about the incident. The 30-year-old fast bowler, who will lead the Proteas' attack in the World Test Championship final against Australia in two weeks time, reaffirmed that the positive drugs test would not define him. 'I don't think there is anything more to speak on that. If I have to elaborate more, move away from it and see how it influenced me, it's led me to some introspection. I took some time away from the game and I think the biggest thing I took away from it was having gratitude for playing the game that we love. I'm just glad to be back playing again.' The SA Institute for Drug Free Sport said in a statement at the start of May that Rabada had tested positive in January while playing in the SA20. Because the positive test occurred outside competition, Rabada received the minimum sanction.

Four life terms for ex-DA councillor after family dies in fire he started
Former DA PR councillor Michael Buthelezi was sentenced to four life terms in prison by the Ladysmith regional court on Friday. Buthelezi was earlier found guilty of killing his partner and three children at his house in Bergville in KwaZulu-Natal in October 2023. He was also sentenced to a further 15 years for two counts of defeating the ends of justice and arson. 'The court heard that Buthelezi burnt his partner Khombisile Nyoka, 41, his 12-year-old daughter Lubanzi Buthelezi, his son Zigizemdoda Buthelezi, 9, and two-year-old last born daughter Sibingele Buthelezi all alive by setting alight a two-roomed house they were sleeping in,' police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda said. Buthelezi miraculously survived the fire with minor burn wounds and claimed he was attacked because of his stance in the fight against corruption. 'The Political Killings Task Team took over the investigations but his tune took a dramatic turn when he later accused his partner's ex-boyfriend of throwing a bomb inside the house. 'Police investigations proved that Buthelezi single-handedly killed his family and overwhelming evidence convinced the court to hand down maximum sentence,' Netshiunda said. KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi praised the investigating team for uncovering the truth and debunking claims that the murders were politically motivated. 'It takes dedication and paying attention to every detail to detect untruths from purported victims and we applaud our investigators for digging out facts and presenting strong evidence before the court,' Mkhwanazi said.

Olorato Mongale murder suspect wanted to end his life, says last person to see him before shoot-out with cops
The Mason Arbor Town tenant who rents vehicles — including one to Makhanya last year — and asked not to be named told TimesLIVE the murder suspect visited him in the early hours of Wednesday and again on Thursday. He said on Wednesday Makhanya called him to hire a car. 'He wanted me to give him an address or I must direct him to my place. When he got here I gave him a code. When he came here he was a person who desperately needed a car and he was with another person,' said the tenant. 'I had learnt he was someone who was being pursued by the police. I told him I am unable to do business with him because his photo was being circulated widely,' he said. He said Makhanya came back a day later with the same plea. 'He asked me to hear him out and expressed his intentions to kill himself. He was crying while we were in the parking lot,' he said. The tenant said Makhanya accompanied him to his third floor flat where he opened up about his life. 'He told me his mother was against this [criminal activities] and often called him out. But he did not listen to his mother. He said had he listened to his mother then things would have been OK,' said the tenant. 'The whole conversation took over three hours and he wanted to kill himself. There was just the two of us and I was in a predicament because I had to calm him down. I told him the solution was not to kill himself but rather own up and get sentenced because he said both his parents were working. 'I could not do anything at the time because I did not know what he would do. Even though he had taken me to his confidence, I did not feel safe. I also did not spot the firearm but saw the cellphones he had,' said the tenant. He said he was alarmed to learn about a string of cases Makhanya was facing and that he did not intend to kill the former TimesLIVE journalist but rather he wanted to extort money from her. He said Makhanya finally agreed to hand himself over to the Amanzimtoti police at dawn. 'He even told me he wanted to take a moment and pray which is the time when the police invaded my place,' said the tenant. He said the incident had taken a toll on him. The tenant would not elaborate on the shooting between Makhanya and the police, or where he was during the incident. KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said the suspect was found with 28 ID cards and about 20 cellphones. Mkwanazi said the tenant claimed Makhanya confessed about the murder and claimed he had been locked up in his flat while Makhanya went to buy food and get money. Anyone who spots the other two suspects should immediately contact Brig Edwin Nama on 082-778-9035.
