Neon sets Oscar path for latest Cannes winner ‘The Secret Agent': Everything to know about the thriller

Could this be the next Anora for Neon? Brazilian political thriller The Secret Agent won four prizes at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival: writer-director Kleber Mendonça Filho won the FIPRESCI Prize, the AFCAE Art House Cinema Award, and Best Director, while star Wagner Moura won Best Actor. More from Gold Derby TIFF reveals its compelling documentary slate featuring Paula Deen, champion whistlers and balloonists 'Deliciously twisted,' 'murderously enjoyable': 'Wednesday' Season 2 reviews surpass Season 1 by double digits Neon picked it up for North American distribution at the festival, along with Palme d'Or winner It Was Just an Accident and second-place Grand Prix winner Sentimental Value, the latter of which is likely Neon's strongest awards contender this year (it's currently sitting at #2 in Gold Derby's combined odds for a Best Picture nomination). The independent distributor hopes to replicate the success it had with Anora, which went from taking Cannes' top prize to winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. The Secret Agent appears to be Neon's third-strongest contender coming out of the festival. Now, the company has set awards season release dates for the film. It will open in New York on Nov. 26, followed by a Los Angeles release on Dec. 5, with a national rollout to follow, per Variety. It is also set to screen at the New York Film Festival this fall. Neon is hoping The Secret Agent will continue its streak of turning Cannes hits into major award winners. Here's what to know about the film as its path comes into focus. What's it about? The Secret Agent is a political thriller set in the waning years of the Brazilian dictatorship. Moura plays a man trying to evade capture by government authorities. Critics describe it as a serious film with a mischievous sense of humor and a digressive narrative structure. Here's the film's official synopsis: 'Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert in his early 40s, is on the run. He arrives in Recife during carnival week, hoping to reunite with his son but soon realizes that the city is far from being the non-violent refuge he seeks.' Who's in it? Moura — who is best known to American audiences for his roles as drug kingpin Pablo Escobar on Narcos, a performance that earned him a Golden Globe nomination in 2016, and as journalist Joel in Civil War — leads a cast that also includes Carlos Francisco, Tânia Maria, Robério Diógenes, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leone, and Udo Kier. What are its awards odds? The Secret Agent is a longshot contender for Best Picture. It's currently sitting at 15th in Gold Derby's nomination odds, but that relatively high ranking doesn't tell the whole story, as it's 18 percentage points behind #14, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. Mendonça Filho is in a similar position in Best Original Screenplay, as he's at #8 but 18 points behind the next contender. He's at #14 in Best Director odds, which puts him firmly outside of the ranks of top-tier contenders. The Secret Agent is a more likely contender in Best Actor and Best International Film. In addition to the Cannes win, Moura has earned the best reviews of his career for his performance. 'He's always been a good actor, but Mendonça Filho makes him a movie star,' The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney wrote in his review of the film. Moura is currently sitting at #8 in the Best Actor odds, which in this race is within striking distance of the top five spots, especially if Neon pushes him hard. Gold Derby doesn't have Best International Film odds yet, but The Secret Agent is the third-ranked international film in Best Picture odds, behind Sentimental Value and It Was Just an Accident, which bodes well for its chances. Fans bewildered by actor 'set to replace' Jesse Eisenberg in Social Network 2

Fans have been left baffled at the prospect of an actor replacing star Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg in the sequel to The Social Network. They've called the move 'odd' and questioned its impact on the film's success. There's been a flurry of reports regarding a sequel to the 2010 Oscar-winning movie about the birth of social media platform Facebook and its founder. In June, it was said that original writer Aaron Sorkin had found the right angle for the second movie after teasing the possibility for years and was confirmed to direct it as well, replacing original director David Fincher. According to Deadline, insiders revealed its title was currently The Social Network Part II although it was 'not a straight sequel' to the first movie, which also featured actors Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Max Minghella and Armie Hammer. Since then, the publication has reported that Sorkin is also keen to cast this year's best actress Academy Award winner Mikey Madison, from Anora, and The Bear's Jeremy Allen White, who will soon be seen in the lead role in Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere. But the latest report reveals that Succession star Jeremy Strong is being eyed by Sorkin to play Zuckerberg, whose company has rebranded as Meta, having had a meeting with the filmmaker. As per The Hollywood Reporter, a source claimed that A Real Pain star and scribe Eisenberg – who was nominated for an Oscar for his work in the first film – had 'passed, at least at this time' on the opportunity to reprise the role. 'As much as I love Jeremy Strong he needs to pass on this. This will not help his career. Without Eisenberg, they should cancel this or find a way into the story without Zuckerberg as a character,' announced @WhereIsBatman89 on X, while another fan insisted: 'Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg or this movie is dead on arrival.' 'We do not want him. Bring Jesse back,' commented Poppy, while @DxTCinema asked: 'Why why why we want Jesse.' Meanwhile fan Chandler called the casting rumour 'odd' and others shared their confusion over a lack of immediate similarity in Strong's and Zuckerberg's looks. 'Ah yes that's perfect they look like twins,' quipped Michael K, while Joelyn added: 'The resemblance is uncanny.' But others were thrilled at the prospect of Strong, who also impressed with his turn as Donald Trump's ruthless mentor Roy Cohn in The Apprentice – for which he was Oscar nominated for best supporting actor. 'YUP let's go. His Oscar is loading,' tweeted Mikayla Davis, with Abhinav adding: 'This cast is WILD. If the script hits, we're looking at another awards season sweep.' 'Trying to be calm about this but Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg is one of the most insane casting coups in history, like we need to give them an Oscar for even thinking about this,' enthused @paaarth319. The Social Network Part II will focus on Facebook's role in the light of the spreading of misinformation ahead of the attempted coup on January 6, 2021 in America, as well as its impact on its young users and violence, and in countries beyond the US too. More Trending It's understood Madison, if she accepts the role, would play whistleblower Frances Haugen, the data engineer who went to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Wall Street Journal. White would be former WSJ tech reporter Jeff Horwitz, who wrote the publication's explosive Facebook Files series of articles based on her information. There was also recognition that Strong could be in contention for a role other than that of Zuckerberg, as there is said to be a part available as a WSJ editor too. Metro has contacted reps for Jeremy Strong and Jesse Eisenberg for comment. Got a story? Andrew Garfield spotted outside OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's house? Viral video sparks buzz

Andrew Garfield is busy gearing up for Artificial, whose story is based on OpenAI's Sam Altman. Andrew Garfield is diving headfirst into Silicon Valley chaos again. The Oscar-nominated actor has officially signed on to star in Artificial, Luca Guadagnino's upcoming comedic drama for Amazon MGM. With social media already in a frenzy over viral on-set footage, the film has become one of the most buzzed-about projects in production. From real-world tech scandals to sharp satire, Artificial promises to blend internet-breaking headlines with Hollywood star power. Garfield is joined by Anora breakout star and recent Oscar nominee Yura Borisov, as well as his real-life girlfriend Monica Barbaro. The trio were recently spotted filming scenes on the streets of San Francisco, including outside what fans claim is the real house of Sam Altman, sparking buzz online. A user shared a video from the shoot, claiming they spotted Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro, and Yuri Borisov filming Luca Guadagnino's Artificial on the streets of San Francisco, and pointed out how Garfield appeared to perfectly mimic Sam Altman's walk. — Arcofthesun7 (@Arcofthesun7) Another post noted that Garfield was seen filming scenes for Artificial right outside what is believed to be the real house of Sam Altman. — garfysource (@garfysource) Reddit users also jumped into the conversation with a mix of excitement and disbelief. One pointed out that the production was taking place right outside Sam Altman's actual residence, which sparked curiosity. Another commented on how rare it is for a film to be shot outside the real-life subject's house, noting that the location happens to be one of the most well-known public streets in the world. When someone asked the crew if Altman was aware of the shoot, the response reportedly was, 'he does now.' Another user made a playful observation that Andrew Garfield, who once played Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network, is now portraying someone like Sam Altman—calling it a full-circle moment. With production already making waves, Artificial is shaping up to be more than just a tech dramedy. The film is being produced by Rich, alongside David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of Heyday Films, and Jennifer Fox. Artificial is written by Simon Rich, and is inspired by the bizarre firing and rehiring of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in 2023—a corporate twist so strange it felt like fiction. In a whirlwind news cycle, Altman was ousted by his own board, only to be reinstated days later in what became one of the most surreal episodes in recent tech history. Artificial won't just rehash the events—it's set to reimagine them through Guadagnino's distinct lens of dark humour and sharp commentary. Garfield, meanwhile, is having a busy year. His upcoming slate includes After The Hunt, The Magic Faraway Tree, Voyagers, and The Rage, keeping him firmly in the spotlight. But Artificial, with its real-life roots and viral set moments, might just be his most talked-about role yet.
