At 3.02 pm on Tuesday, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla (call name Shux) and his three crewmates' space mission ended with the textbook splashdown of their return capsule in the Pacific Ocean off California. The Axiom 4 mission, which entailed 18 days of experiments and observations aboard the International Space Station (ISS), created history for the Indian space programme. Shux became the second Indian in space after Squadron Leader Rakesh Sharma's April 1984 sortie to the Soviet Salyut 7 space station. The 41 years between the two have witnessed significant progress in space technology. Therefore, a comparison between Sharma's eight-day venture then and Shux's 18-day mission now would be unfair. Besides, while the former mission was more of a diplomatic endeavour between India and the then USSR as a result of Cold War coddling; the Ax 4 mission was a commercial, public-private venture involving collaboration between Nasa, Indian Space Research Organisation and European Space Agency on one side, and Axiom Space and SpaceX on the other.

He later shared another version filmed from the International Space Station, writing, 'is this the longest tracking shot in history with the camera moving at 5miles a second?" Shukla and his three fellow astronauts of the Axiom-4 mission concluded an 18-day stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and embarked on their return journey. The Dragon capsule 'Grace" undocked from the ISS on Monday at 4:45 pm IST (2:15 am PDT), and carried the crew safely back toward Earth. SpaceX had scheduled the de-orbit burn for 2:07 pm IST over the Pacific Ocean, followed by the release of the spacecraft's trunk and heat shield orientation at 2:26 pm IST. Atmospheric entry brought fierce heat—reaching nearly 1,600 °C—before four parachutes deployed in stages: stabilising chutes at about 5.7 km altitude, followed by main parachutes at roughly 2 km, resulting in a dramatic splashdown around 3:01 pm IST (2:31 am PDT). This mission marked a historic milestone for India, Poland, and Hungary, sending astronauts from all three countries to space after several decades. Shukla also became the second Indian to travel to space, following Rakesh Sharma's landmark journey in 1984. Students watch splashdown live, thrilled by experience
BENGALURU: Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium (JNP) screened the livestream of Axiom 4's return to Earth carrying pilot Shubhanshu Shukla and the rest of the crew on Tuesday. The C V Vishveshvara Auditorium at JNP was all waiting for Axiom 4's splashdown, which was carrying Shukla of the ISRO. Dr B R Guruprasad, former ISRO scientist and director of JNP, who provided crucial insights alongside the crew's descent, pointed out, 'It [Shukla's participation in the mission] has empowered Indian scientists. It is going to tremendously benefit Indian space programmes.' Excited students from a BBMP-run school in Kamala Nagar and Government High School, Itagi, comprised the majority of the throng. Jayashri Murudeppanavar, an English teacher at Government High School, Itagi, said, 'The students and I enjoyed the great opportunity to witness this landing.' Sara, 10-year-old, who could barely contain her glee at having witnessed the event said, 'When they [the Axiom 4 crew] launched, I saw the livestream. I wanted to see how they came back to the earth. I want to become an astronaut when I grow up. I learnt a lot from Sunita Williams,' she said.
