Ceci on the other side of Oilers-Stars battle as NHL's west final gets underway
DALLAS – Cody Ceci's on the other side now. The Dallas Stars defenceman and the Edmonton Oilers are frenemies in the NHL's Western Conference final. Ceci was a key cog on the back end and prime penalty killer for the Oilers in their run to Game 7 of last year's Stanley Cup final against the Florida Panthers. The 31-year-old from Ottawa helped the Oilers reach the conference final in two of his three seasons in Edmonton. 'It'll definitely be weird playing against that group,' Ceci said Wednesday before Game 1 at American Airlines Center. 'We've spent a lot of time together the last few years and went on some deep runs, so it will be a little weird, but I've just got to stay focused on the task.' Ceci was traded to the San Jose Sharks in August for a draft pick and defenceman Ty Emberson, shortly after Stan Bowman took over as Edmonton's general manager. The Stars acquired Ceci and forward Mikael Granlund from San Jose at the March 7 trade deadline for a first-round pick and a conditional third-rounder. 'It's been a crazy year, moving twice, and it's been kind of a whirlwind but it's nice to end up on a playoff team and get this opportunity,' Ceci said. The six-foot-three, 210-pound defenceman was a key part of Edmonton's penalty kill, which posted a 94.3 per cent success rate in the 2024 playoffs that ended with a Game 7 loss to the Panthers. That run included holding Dallas to zero power-play goals on 14 chances to take the Western Conference final in six games. Ceci now brings those skills to a Dallas penalty kill that ran at 86.1 per cent through the first two rounds. He also averaged nearly 22 minutes of ice time per game. 'He is a huge part of our kill that's been great and just defends super well,' said Stars centre Wyatt Johnston. 'He's even able to get up into the play and create some chances as well.' Ceci says he'll put friendships with Oilers players on hold during the conference final, and former partner Darnell Nurse plans to do the same. 'I'm not going to pump up Cees too much here,' Nurse said. 'He's on the other team here, but he was a great partner to play with. 'He's having success here, and good for him. Hopefully that doesn't carry on through the series.' — ROAD WARRIORS: After dropping their first two games of the playoffs in Los Angeles, the Oilers won four straight away from Rogers Place, including a sweep of the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena. Oilers forward Zach Hyman says that's a product of a third conference final appearance in four years, and the Oilers being the oldest team left in the final four with an average age of 30.7 years. 'It comes with experience, just being able to play in those environments,' Hyman said. 'Playoffs bring out the best in everyone, in the fans as well, and it's louder the further you get, so having the experience to know that you've been there and you know how to play those environments, I think helps.' — RESTRICTING RANTANEN: Containing Stars forward Mikko Rantanen, who led all post-season scorers with nine goals and 10 assists entering Game 1, was among Edmonton's top defensive priorities to start the conference final. When asked how to contain the big, skilled Rantanen, Oilers forward Evander Kane replied, 'Play big, powerful, and skilled.' Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. 'He's a big body out there and a great set of hands,' Kane continued. 'Like any player, you want to play them hard, whether that's Rantanen, whether that's Tyler Seguin or Cody Ceci. 'You want to play them hard. At this time of the year, both teams understand that. It's going to be a battle with everybody in their lineup and with everybody in our lineup. He's had a great playoffs. Hopefully, we can play him hard.' Rantanen's first game as a Dallas Star came the day after the March 7 trade deadline — a 5-4 loss to the Oilers in which he had a goal and an assist. Rantanen's knee caught Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner in the head during a March 26 rematch, sidelining Skinner for eight straight games. The ex-SNP leader will chair the headline witches show on Saturday evening on June 14. Ms Sturgeon will be joined on stage by Claire Mitchell KC and Zoe Venditozzi who are the founders of Witches of Scotland campaign. It comes after a campaign was launched five years ago to get a legal pardon for the estimated 2,500 people - the vast majority of them women - who were executed under Scotland's Witchcraft Act between the 16th and 18th Centuries. In 2022, when she was First Minister at the time, Ms Sturgeon marked International Women's Day by apologising for the thousands of women executed or convicted of being witches in Scotland hundreds of years ago. She insisted it was important to acknowledge that "injustice on a colossal scale" had taken place which she said was driven "at least in part" by misogyny. The law was was in force from 1563 until 1736 - a period when witch hunts took place in many countries. However, academics reckon Scotland's execution rate was five times the European average. Under the brutal regime, confessions were secured under torture and "witches" were strangled and their body burnt. Opening a Holyrood debate on IWD at the time, Ms Sturgeon said: "At a time when women were not even allowed to speak as witnesses in a court room, they were accused and killed because they were poor, different, vulnerable, or in many cases just because they were women." Inside 'Cave of the Devil' with 'blood-smeared walls where witches cast spells' The former First Minister has even been branded a witch herself in previous years. During the pandemic, a cheeky five-year-old went viral when she called Ms Sturgeon a "wee witch" after coronavirus restrictions ruined her sleepover plans. Youngster Freya was left gutted after house visits were banned in Glasgow, West Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire. It meant the schoolgirl was unable to go to her friend Ceci's house for her first ever sleepover. In the video, Freya said: "Nicola Sturgeon, how dare you. "I could go to my friend Ceci's party. I've got a sleepover at Ceci's at the weekend and I'm going to it. "I'm not cancelling. Wee witch." The Dundee Book Festival will run from Thursday, June 12 until Sunday, June 15 in a number of different venues across the city.

Twin sisters share their sexual assault experience
HOLT, Mich. (WLNS) — April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and to help raise public awareness, 6 News sat down with two sisters who shared their experience and journey to forgiveness. 'So, the journey started rough, messy, but I think through hard work, through mentorship, through counseling. I think all of us as siblings were able to take a very messy situation and turn into the message we have today, and that is healing is possible,' said Ceci Bordayo. Ceci and her twin sister, Priscilla Bordayo, say they were both victims of sexual assault. 'During that time, it was just a difficult time when you're trying to navigate just life in general,' said Priscilla. Priscilla says she was just 12 years old when it happened and that the abuse altered her life. 'Just being abused really changed my life in a negative way. I feel like I just had a lot of insecurities. Made a lot of bad choices out of a hurt place. I feel like I've come a long way from like being victimized to truly being like a victor and overcoming it,' said Priscilla. Priscilla now lives by a special motto that helps her reach out to other assault victims, 'I truly believe that hurt people hurt people, but healed people, heal people, and I've just been very dedicated, not only my own healing, but helping other victims who've been affected by sexual assault heal. So they, too themselves can also be victors.' Ceci says her story started when she was around seven years old, and her way of healing was through songwriting. 'I'm a church kid. So, I just started writing music, and that was just kind of my escape, and express really the pain that I was holding onto,' said Ceci. Erin Roberts, Therapy Team Supervisor at Michigan State Univeristy, says to watch out for signs that someone you know may have experienced trauma. 'Somebody isolates a bit more, they become more quiet. There may be a lack of trust. They might change in how they're operating. Maybe they're skipping class. Maybe they're missing work,' said Roberts. She says the best way to support a victim is to simply believe them, 'Most important in that moment that they are believed and making the space to listen. Don't do as much talking. Listen and support.' After a long journey of reconciliation and forgiveness, Priscilla wants to remind victims that they're not alone. 'I really encourage victims to share with someone that they trust. Share their story and their voice is very powerful. You can actually turn your pain into purpose by sharing your story. The best gift you can give yourself is to heal and to forgive,' said Priscilla. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Granlund scores first goal for Dallas Stars in 4-1 win over Vancouver Canucks
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Mikael Granlund scored his first goal for the Stars and Dallas beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-1 on Sunday night. Dallas picked up both the Finnish center and Cody Ceci from the San Jose Sharks for first- and third-round picks on Feb. 1. Thomas Harley, Jason Robertson and Mikko Rantanen also scored for the Stars, who were coming off a 5-4 loss to the Oilers. Ceci and Matt Duchene each contributed a pair of assists. Dallas goalie Casey DeSmith — who played for the Canucks last season — stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced in his return to Vancouver. Derek Forbort had the lone goal for the Canucks, scoring for the first time since Feb. 16, 2023, when he was a member of the Boston Bruins. Vancouver got 15 saves from Kevin Lankinen and missed the services of captain Quinn Hughes (lower-body injury) for a third straight game. Takeaways Stars: The team played without star center Roope Hintz, who took a puck to the face in the Stars' 5-4 loss to the Oilers on Saturday. Head coach Pete DeBoer said before puck drop that Hintz has flown back to back to Dallas and is getting more imaging done on the injury. Canucks: The result did nothing to improve Vancouver's playoff picture. The club remains locked in a battle with the Calgary Flames, Utah Hockey Club and St. Louis Blues for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Key moment Lankinen denied Ceci with his blocker as time ticked down in the second period, but the rebound popped out to Granlund and he ripped a shot over the goalie's shoulder with just 25.9 seconds left to give the Stars a 2-1 lead. It was his first goal in 13 games. Key stat Robertson extended his point streak to eight games with eight goals and seven assists across the stretch. Up next The Stars visit Winnipeg on Friday. The Canucks wrap up a four-game homestand against Montreal on Tuesday. ___ AP NHL:
