The OnePlus Open 2 isn't happening this year

The OnePlus Open was a surprisingly good device, especially considering that it was the company's first attempt at making a foldable phone. Unfortunately, in a community note published today, OnePlus announced that a proper follow-up to the Open won't be arriving in 2025. In the post, OnePlus Open product manager Vale G. said that the company has "carefully considered the timing and our next steps in foldable devices, and we have made the decision not to release a foldable this year." That's definitely a bummer, particularly for fans of devices with flexible displays in the US, who aren't able to easily buy handsets from Chinese brands like Huawei, Xiaomi and OnePlus' parent company Oppo. It's also a bit of a shock considering that the Open hit the shelves more than a year and a half ago in late 2023, so it was due for an update. The one positive takeaway from this is that while the OnePlus Open 2 isn't happening this year, the company isn't giving up on foldables forever, saying "This is not a step back, it's a recalibration. Our commitment to innovation is stronger than ever, and we're excited to bring you fresh, unique experiences that truly Never Settle." For owners of the Open, OnePlus also noted that the phone will continue to receive regular software and security updates as scheduled. Unfortunately, this means that for the US market, there are only two main manufacturers still making big foldable phones: Samsung and Google, who we expect to announce refreshed models sometime later this summer. What's worse is that when it comes to the Galaxy Z Fold line, the recent lack of competition feels like it has allowed Samsung to slack off, with the Z Fold 6 only offering middling improvements over previous generations. So here's hoping OnePlus can rejoin the fray soon to help spur competition between the handful of phone makers still trying to innovate with a small but slowly growing niche.

Why the OnePlus Open 2 situation is terrible for phone fans

For the last months mobile fans have been watching the Oppo Find N5 foldable phone news with interest, as it was widely expected to be very similar to the OnePlus Open 2, which unlike the Oppo phone would almost certainly be released in the U.S. during 2025. Unfortunately, OnePlus has crushed our hopes for such a phone, and clearly stated in a blog post that it has, 'made the decision not to release a foldable this year.' That's right, no OnePlus Open 2. Here's what it means, and why it's bad news. For those who don't know, Oppo entered into a partnership with OnePlus in 2021, when the two brands (both were also once separate parts of the defunct BBK Electronics empire) began working closely together on software and hardware. The OnePlus blog post shared on its Community Forum starts out by saying the company has been observing the tech world's interest in the Oppo Find N5, and the anticipation for a OnePlus version of the phone. 'At OnePlus, our core strength and passion lie in setting new benchmarks and challenging the status quo across all product categories,' the company wrote. 'With that in mind, we've carefully considered the timing and our next steps in foldable devices, and we have made the decision not to release a foldable this year.' There's no ambiguity here. It's very clear that not only will the OnePlus Open 2 not be coming this year, but there won't be a compact foldable to challenge phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 or Motorola Razr Plus either. The post goes on to say, 'while this may come as a surprise, we believe this is the right approach for us at this time,' and adds how it's going to let Oppo 'take the lead' in foldables. If the Find N5 isn't going to morph into the OnePlus Open 2 in 2025, there would be no point in it doing so in 2026 either, as it would be too far, technically, behind the curve. Few would be excited about a rebranded 2024 foldable in 2026. It seems OnePlus has given itself an entire year to assess how it next approaches foldable phones — it calls this a 'pause' and a 'recalibration,' indicating it's not leaving the space completely — but in reality it may have even longer to ponder. The Oppo Find N3 arrived at the end of 2023, around the same time as the OnePlus Open. Oppo was happy to let the Find N3 continue on throughout 2024 (skipping the Find N4), while OnePlus vaguely refreshed the Open with the OnePlus Open Apex Edition mid-way through the year. The Find N5 looks all set to be a considerable step forward over the Find N3, not least because it will take the crown of 'world's thinnest foldable phone' from the Honor Magic V3. For this reason, Oppo may decide the Find N5 will carry its big-screen foldable hopes well into 2026. OnePlus and Oppo worked together on the Find N3/Open, meaning it's unlikely OnePlus will go it alone on the development of an Open 2 and will wait to jointly develop a sequel to the Find N5 with Oppo. When OnePlus decides it's ready to make another foldable phone, it's possible such a device won't arrive until well into 2026. By that point, it may as well follow Oppo's odd naming decision and call it the OnePlus Open 3. There are two big reasons why this is bad news. The first is a continued lack of variety in big-screen foldables in the U.S., where it's the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, or nothing. Both these phones are great — the Pixel 9 Pro Fold was one of my personal favorites last year — but without competition, prices won't drop and brands won't feel the need to quickly innovate. OnePlus will tell you the OnePlus Open Apex Edition is its 2025 foldable, but we all know this is marketing spin. It's a facelift Open, which was released at the end of 2023. It's also bad news for adoption, crucial to the growth of foldables in general, and this may be the unsaid reason OnePlus has decided against a foldable this year: they just aren't selling enough to make it worthwhile. Data collected by Counterpoint Research at the end of 2024 showed global foldable phone shipments decreased slightly between July and September, and that Samsung ruled the market with a 56% share. Tellingly, this number was substantially down on its 70% share for the prior period. This wasn't an unforeseen event. In its Worldwide Foldable Phone Forecast released in early 2024, research firm IDC wrote, 'Foldables were a hard sell in 2023, as many vendors struggled to move significant inventory. The market has not fully embraced the form factor. High prices and longevity remain a challenge to both consumers and vendors.' However, it's not like other brands aren't finding success with foldables. Vivo and Xiaomi gained ground in 2024 with the X Fold 3 Pro and Mix Flip respectively. Honor continues to build interesting and innovative folding phones, as does Tecno with its Phantom series. OnePlus's decision (or Oppo's decision, depending on how you view the partnership) may see it fall behind the competition over the next year. But because the overall Oppo/OnePlus business won't suffer due to the Find N5's existence, it's only BUYERS that suffer, particularly in the U.S. where the other foldables mentioned aren't officially sold. The death of the OnePlus Open 2 in 2025 is bad news for us, but does it leave OnePlus in a terrible position for the year? No, absolutely not. It has kicked off 2025 with what I'm beginning to think is the best phone it has ever made, the OnePlus 13. There are very few downsides to it, and the aggressive price means it really should be at the top of anyone's list when considering other phones like the Google Pixel 9 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S25 Plus. I think it should be seriously considered over the Galaxy S25 Ultra too. The OnePlus 13R is also well worth your attention. Even without the Open 2, OnePlus is well on its way to a stellar 2025, but the OnePlus 13's resounding success is somewhat bittersweet, as if it brought the same magic to the Open 2, along with a modest strategic price drop, it could have stolen the market from the aging (and a bit dull) Galaxy Z Fold 6, and pricey Pixel 9 Pro Fold. But now, sadly, all discussion of the OnePlus Open 2 has become a case of 'what could have been.'

Oppo Find N5 finally gets a launch date, the slimmest foldable is coming on February 20

The Find N5 is expected to be the slimmest foldable phone ever made, potentially rebranded as the OnePlus Open 2 in some regions. The phone will be available in Cosmic Black and Misty White, featuring a slim design with a large camera visor. In less than ten days from now, we will likely witness the world's slimmest foldable phone as Oppo just announced the launch date of its much-anticipated Find N5. After several leaks and rumors, the company now has a launch event set for February 20, which is the global launch going to be held in Singapore. The teaser images from Oppo already reveal how slimmer the phone looks when folded and unfolded, and is certainly creating curiosity amongst tech enthusiasts, which very few foldable phones have been able to create in recent times. Another reason for the raised anticipation is that the Find N5 is likely to be dubbed the OnePlus Open 2 in other regions including the U.S. The company also boasts that the Find N5 is the most powerful and durable foldable phone that it has ever made, alongside its slimmer form factor. While the Find N5 is already teased with images, Oppo has also confirmed that it would be coming in two colorways: Cosmic Black and Misty White. Design-wise, the Find N5 should measure as thin as a USB Type-C port on one side, and the other side is likely to be even more slimmer. The camera visor still looks gigantic, and Hasselblad's integration also appears to be in place. A triple rear camera setup is expected, and the visor that size could make the device wobbly when placed on a table. The teaser further hints at Gemini integration right out of the box on the Find N5. However, it is still unclear whether there would be freebies like a free Gemini One AI Premium subscription with the purchase of the Find N5 similar to the Pixel 9 series. Meanwhile, some of the leaked hands-on images of the Find N5 reveal a promising foldable coming from Oppo. The device can be seen from all angles, and the notable foldable screen is also visible. The expected specifications, per the tipster Abhishek Yadav on X, indicate that the Find N5 will feature a notable 8.5-inch foldable screen and is powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, accompanied by Adreno 830 GPU. For optics, the triple camera system will likely include a 50MP primary lens next to an 8MP and another 50MP sensor. For selfies, the device will host an 8MP lens on the cover display. The device is expected to be shipped with the Android 15-based Color OS 15 operating system and will further have a 5600mAh battery capacity underneath, with support for 80W wired and 50W wireless charging. Here's a 360-degree look at the what should eventually become the OnePlus Open 2

The OnePlus Open was a successful foldable alternative in the US market with excellent battery life and performance. The Oppo Find N5, likely to be rebranded as the OnePlus Open 2 in international markets, is expected to launch soon (Feb 19-20). Leaked images provide a comprehensive look at the Oppo Find N5, showcasing what will eventually become the OnePlus Open 2 from all angles. The October 2023-released OnePlus Open was a surprise hit, giving US-based customers a worthy alternative to Samsung, Google, and Motorola's foldable dominance. The device didn't do well just because of its novelty — the foldable backed it up with excellent battery life and performance, a great camera system, a huge 7.82-inch folding panel, and an anti-reflection coating that helps hide the device's already muted crease. For what it's worth, the first-gen device didn't feel like an early draft in the same way that the Pixel Fold did. 2024 came and went with no successor to the OnePlus Open, but that won't likely be the case with 2025. For reference, the original OnePlus Open was co-designed by OnePlus and Oppo. The latter released the foldable as the Oppo Find N3, while OnePlus branded it as the OnePlus Open in international markets. The Oppo Find N3's successor — the Oppo Find N5, is poised to be unveiled on February 19 or 20, prompting us to believe that the OnePlus Open 2 couldn't be too far behind. While we wait for an official announcement, here's what you can expect the upcoming device to look like, courtesy of reliable leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks). From what we already know, the Oppo Find N5, and in turn the OnePlus Open 2, are expected to feature an IPX9 rating, which means the device(s) will be protected against high pressure water jets and submersion. For reference, the ObePlus Open was only IPX4 resistant, which saved it from the occasional water splash. The upcoming device's camera placement appears to be consistent, albeit with the LED flash relocated within the circular camera bar. Elsewhere, from the looks of it, the foldable clearly appears to be slimmer than its predecessor, with the device reported to sport an unfolded thickness of 4mm — thinner than the 4.3mm Honor Magic V3 Fold. The device will also reportedly hop on the titanium body bandwagon, but specifics are currently unclear. The OnePlus Open 2 is expected to be the first foldable in the US powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, complete with 50W wireless and 80W wired charging support expected. Details surrounding the upcoming devices' pricing remain scarce, but we'll likely learn more when Oppo announces the Find N5 later this month. Additionally, we should also have more clarity surrounding the eventual OnePlus Open 2 release timeline once the Find N5's dust settles.

The world's slimmest foldable phone has leaked, and it looks stunning

In roughly two weeks from now, the Oppo Find N5 will appear on stage as the world's thinnest foldable phone. Ahead of the glitzy launch event, the phone has leaked in all its sleek glory. Not that the company hasn't been giving us cheeky glimpses lately, but this is the first time we are seeing it from all angles adorned in different shades. The leaked renders, which come courtesy of Evan Blass (via Substack), show the Oppo Find N5 in three colors. The first aspect that grabs the attention is its thin cross-section profile, which is reportedly going to measure only 4.2mm, thinner than a pencil and Apple's own record-breaking iPad Pro. While the black and white trims appear to rock a familiar frosted glass finish, it's the purple trim that really demands attention. This one rocks a leather finish reminiscent of the one we saw on the limited edition OnePlus Open last year. Notably, the Oppo Find N5 is said to arrive in the US market under the OnePlus Open 2 label. The fundamental design language is not too different from the Oppo Find N3, or its spiritual sibling, the OnePlus Open. The only difference is the reduced thickness, and a few major internal upgrades that are discussed below. The leaked images also put the camera module under the spotlight. Once again, Oppo is borrowing camera expertise from the folks over at Hasselblad, and if the OnePlus 13 is anything to go by, we are in for some fantastic imaging results. On closer inspection, one can also notice the periscope-style zoom camera, which is reassuring. But the Oppo Find N5 is not all show. There's a lot of substance underneath that chassis. Let's start with the inner flexible screen, the heart of any foldable phone. As per images shared by a top executive, the nasty display crease is gone, at least from the upcoming phone. The company has also addressed the crucial concern of ingress protection. To that end, the next Oppo foldable will also stand out from the competition by offering IPX6, IPX8, and IPX9 full-grade waterproofing. And despite the thin sides, Oppo has still managed to cram a physical profile switch slider. As far as the innards go, it will come armed with Qualcomm's top-end Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, a silicon that also powers the current crop of Android flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. Notably, the Oppo Find N5 will also support 50W wireless charging, eclipsing the likes of Galaxy S25 Plus and iPhone 16 Pro Max, even when they are getting juiced up in wired mode. This one is shaping up to be a phone that defines the foldable race this year, and it will take rivals like Samsung some serious effort to top Oppo's work.
