See the bizarre life forms scientists discovered more than 30,000 feet under the Pacific Ocean

Benji previously worked as a wildlife researcher. Collections of microbes at the bottom of a trench in the Pacific Ocean. Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, CAS The Titanic lies about 12,500 feet under the ocean. The pressure down there is so immense that even submersibles supposedly built for those conditions can, as we know, tragically fail. Now imagine taking a sub nearly three times deeper. That's what an international team of scientists did last summer. Led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the researchers took a manned submersible to the bottom of deep-sea trenches in an area in the northwest Pacific Ocean, roughly between Japan and Alaska, reaching a depth of more than 31,000 feet. The researchers weren't looking for a shipwreck. They were interested in what else might be lurking on the seafloor, which is so deep that no light can reach it. It was there that they found something remarkable: entire communities of animals, rooted in organisms that are able to derive energy not from sunlight but from chemical reactions. Through a process called chemosynthesis, deep-sea microbes are able to turn compounds like methane and hydrogen sulfide into organic compounds, including sugars, forming the base of the food chain. The discovery was published in the journal Nature. This was the deepest community of chemosynthetic life ever discovered, according to Mengran Du, a study author and researcher at the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Credit: Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, CAS Using a deep-sea vessel called Fendouzhe, the researchers encountered abundant wildlife communities, including fields of marine tube worms peppered with white marine snails. The worms have a symbiotic relationship with chemosynthetic bacteria that live in their bodies. Those bacteria provide them with a source of nutrients in exchange for, among other things, a stable place to live. Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, CAS Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, CAS Among the tube worms the scientists encountered white, centipede-like critters — they're also a kind of worm, in the genus macellicephaloides — as well as sea cucumbers. Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, CAS The researchers also found a variety of different clams on the seafloor, often alongside anemones. Similar to the tube worms, the clams depend on bacteria within their shells to turn chemical compounds like methane and hydrogen sulfide that are present in the deep sea into food. Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, CAS Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, CAS Unlike other deep-sea ecosystems — which feed on dead animals and other organic bits that fall from shallower waters — these trench communities are likely sustained in part by methane produced by microbes buried under the seafloor, the authors said. That suggests that wildlife communities may be more common in these extremely deep trenches than scientists once thought. Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, CAS 'The presence of these chemosynthetic ecosystems challenge long-standing assumptions about life's potential at extreme depths,' Du told Vox in an email.

Is this Newport mansion the next hot spot for hitmaking?
Now, a drum kit sits to the left of a hand-carved plaster fireplace and amplifiers rest under a 1700s portrait of King Louis XIV. Overhead, the ceiling's design mimics the Titanic's first class dining room (created before the ship's tragic demise, of course). On breezy days, the scent of the ocean rolls past Sarazen's desk through doors leading to a courtyard that's hosted countless concerts. James Cameron Plans for a Brand New "Avatar" Spin-Off
Yara Sameh James Cameron is planning to expand his blockbuster 'Avatar' franchise. In an interview with Empire magazine, Cameron, the writer, director and creator of the Avatar films, unveiled his plans for that world, which included him saying that he told Disney he wants to make more Avatar stories using animation. 'I said, 'Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that's essentially in the world but stories that you wouldn't have expected from that world',' the Titanic director recalled. 'There might even be an animated feature in there — it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature.' Cameron went on to note that 'great examples' for his idea include The Animatrix, because 'they went afield in the Matrix world.' However, the Oscar winner explained how his ideas for Avatar haven't left the drawing board. 'We haven't done much with that yet. We're still gathering our stories and that sort of thing,' he said. 'I've got to find the boutique filmmakers, the animators, that want to do it.' Cameron's third Avatar film, "Avatar: Fire and Ash", is set to release in theaters on December 19, and the first trailer for it dropped on Monday, is already receiving rave reviews and being called 'some of the most beautiful footage I've seen all year.' Also on the horizon for Cameron is an unknown 3D project he's working on with Billie Eilish that was announced earlier this month. 'So you may have noticed that there are more cameras than usual in here. Basically, I can't say much about it, but what I can say is that I'm working on something very, very special with somebody named James Cameron, and it's going to be in 3D,' the singer told the crowd at night one of her Manchester shows. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

In new A24 movie 'Eternity,' Elizabeth Olsen must choose between 2 dead husbands
When you die, should you spend eternity with your first husband or your last? That's the question at the center of 'Eternity' — watch the trailer now. Picture this: You die and get to choose how you want to spend forever — which includes your one true love. Sounds pretty sweet, right? Unfortunately, in the case of the new A24 movie Eternity, which dropped its first trailer on Tuesday, the sweet hereafter comes with a catch: You have two dead husbands, and they're both vying for a spot next to you in the afterlife. Eep! Eternity stars Elizabeth Olsen as Joan, the woman in question, who dies shortly after the death of her second husband, Larry, played by Miles Teller. But while Teller's character is eager to get a jump on the rest of their immortal lives, his wife's first husband, Luke, played by The Boys in the Boat actor Callum Turner, appears. Apparently, Luke died in 'the war' decades earlier — and he's been waiting for his wife to arrive to kickstart his own eternity ever since. So, how do you pick?! While the movie will, we hope, answer that question, people who watched the new trailer offered their thoughts in the YouTube comments. Some people thought the ending was reminiscent of Titanic, in which Rose (played by Kate Winslet) seemingly spends the afterlife with her pals on the sunken ship, and her lover-of-two-days Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) instead of the husband she spent more than 40 years raising a family with. Most people, however, saw Joan picking second husband, Larry, in the end. 'Prediction: Miles Teller wins his wife by giving her his blessing to choose Callum Turner instead of him, because he just wants his wife to be happy and her new husband turns out to be too selfish to do the same, proving Miles Teller cares more about Elizabeth Olsen and that she should pick him,' one wrote. Another said, 'Not me immediately wanting to cry just thinking about how hard it is going to be for her to followed by me thinking, 'Can't all three of them just be together for eternity?'' The idea that Olsen's character may not need to choose resonated with another viewer, who wrote, 'I hope Elizabeth Olsen makes a world for all three of them.' And another joked, 'OMG imagine dying and realizing that compulsory monogamy exists even in the afterlife.' While a throuple is certainly a possibility, Teller's character doesn't believe that it's the best route. When he sees how his wife's former spouse is laying on the romance, he vows to make her remember why she fell for him in the first place. But will it be enough to get to spend eternity with his one true love? Eternity is directed by David Freyne and will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Freyne is credited as cowriter of the film along with former Obama White House aide Patrick Cunnane, whose original script appeared on the 2022 Black List of Hollywood's best unproduced screenplays. Eternity is set to hit theaters in November. Check out the trailer below: Solve the daily Crossword
