How the London Eye became a symbol of the UK's capital
Floating high above the London skyline aboard her most famous creation, architect Julia Barfield is still giddy that the London Eye Ferris wheel has become a symbol of the city.

The initial priority was finding a breathtaking way to see the British capital, she said inside one of its 32 glass pods as it drifted against the backdrop of the Houses of Parliament.
Built to mark the turn of the millennium in 2000, it has since established itself as one of the UK's most visited paid attractions. Each year around 3.5 million tourists take in its panoramic views on half-hour trips.
Stamped on souvenirs, sketched by street artists and snapped in an endless stream of selfies, the Eye has become nearly as big a landmark as Big Ben.

But its future was not always so assured.

Victoria later received the same award for services to the fashion industry. David Beckham was last month named in Time Magazine's list of the 100 most influential leaders in philanthropy. He is an official ambassador for The King's Foundation, supporting its education programmes and "efforts to ensure young people have a greater understanding of nature" and has been a Unicef goodwill ambassador since 2005. Thousands of white-robed pilgrims recited Koranic verses from dawn on the 70-metre rocky rise near Mecca on Thursday, where the Prophet Mohammed is believed to have given his last sermon. But numbers thinned by midday following official warnings for pilgrims to stay inside between 10 am and 4 pm. Saudi authorities have taken steps to reduce the risk from heat at the hajj, which has drawn more than 1.6 million pilgrims to one of the world's hottest regions, according to fresh figures published on Thursday. Barring a few years of Covid restrictions, this hajj season has recorded the lowest number of pilgrims in over three decades. The dip comes after 1,301 people died in temperatures that hit 51.8 degrees Celsius last year – most of them illegal pilgrims, according to Saudi authorities, who implemented stringent measures to reduce their numbers this season. Unregistered, non-fee-paying pilgrims lack access to the full amenities offered during the hajj, including air-conditioned tents, making them particularly vulnerable to heat-related health risks. On Thursday, ice packs were handed to people walking towards Mount Arafat, with some placing the small bags on their heads. With temperatures reaching 42 degrees, officials ushered people away if they spent too long in one place near the bouldered hill, which had fans spraying mist and cool air at its foot. (AFP)

That set up a semifinal showdown with France's 361st-ranked Lois Boisson. The second seed Gauff battled past her fellow American 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 6-1 in a tense last-eight clash littered with a whopping 14 double-faults and 101 unforced errors. "It means a lot, especially getting through this tough match today, it wasn't an easy match and I'm very happy to get through it," Gauff said. "I'm so excited to be in the semifinals back here again and have a lot more work to do. Just savour this one today and then next one tomorrow." Keys came through a tense first set in a tie-break after blowing a 4-1 lead with a double-break, but Gauff upped her level enough to fight back. The 21-year-old was the runner-up to Iga Swiatek in a one-sided showpiece match in 2022. Keys had been hoping to challenge for a second consecutive Grand Slam title, but failed to reach the semifinals in Paris for a second time. Boisson, meanwhile, continued her dream run at Roland Garros, defeating world number six Mirra Andreeva to advance to the final four.
