Happy Eid, Op-ed

Elham Aboul Fateh Happy Eid to you all! Today marks the second day of the blessed Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Adha is not merely a holiday filled with joy and delight; it is a sacred moment, recurring over thousands of years, to remind us of the greatest lessons of faith and sacrifice. The story of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who said to himself, "Indeed, I am going to my Lord; He will guide me" (Surah As-Saffat: 99), as he prepared to carry out God's command to sacrifice his dearest possession, his beloved son, is a message that remains etched in our hearts and souls. His obedience was without hesitation, and his faith was unwavering, until Allah, out of His mercy, replaced the sacrifice with a magnificent ram. Thus, it was both redemption and mercy simultaneously. O Allah, Protector of the heavens and the earth, we ask You to protect our children and safeguard our country from all harm. Make our beloved Egypt a homeland of peace and glory, steadfast against fierce winds, strong by Your wisdom and mercy. O Allah, grant us a good ending, and grant us a sincere intention to build the earth with goodness and righteous deeds. O Allah, Most Generous and Merciful, You who hold dominion over the heavens and the earth, we ask You in these blessed days to protect our country from all evil and to lift every worry and grief from our homeland. O Allah, keep Egypt safe and resilient in Your care, illuminating its paths with the light of Your wisdom, and raising its banner of glory high and unshakeable. O Allah, keep our children and families in Your preservation and safety, guard them from every danger, and fill their hearts with tranquility and faith. O Allah, grant us strength of resolve, expand our provisions, and bless our time and deeds. O Allah, just as You commanded Prophet Ibrahim to obey You and brought him closer to You through sacrifice, make us also closer to You, and keep us firm on the path of truth and righteous deeds. O Allah, make all our days Eids – Eids of peace, security, and success. Protect our homeland Egypt from all harm, and make it a land of goodness, dignity, and prosperity. O Allah with whom trusts are never lost, O Allah with whom hope is never disappointed, all praise is due to You for Your countless blessings, and all thanks are due to You for Your unending grace. Amen, O Lord of the Worlds. May Egypt, its people and government, and the entire Islamic world be in peace and safety every year. read more Analysis- Turkey Has 0 Regional Allies... Why? Eid begins in Gaza with outdoor prayers amongst ruins and food growing ever scarcer - War on Gaza

Palestinians across the war-ravaged Gaza Strip marked the start of one of Islam's most important holidays with prayers outside destroyed mosques and homes early Friday, with little hope the Israeli genocidal war will end soon. With much of Gaza in rubble, men and children were forced to hold the traditional Eid al-Adha prayers in the open air and with food supplies dwindling, families were having to make do with what they could scrape together for the three-day feast. 'This is the worst feast that the Palestinian people have experienced because of the unjust war against the Palestinian people,' said Kamel Emran after attending prayers in the southern city of Khan Younis. 'There is no food, no flour, no shelter, no mosques, no homes, no mattresses ... The conditions are very, very harsh.' The holiday begins on the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Dhul-Hijja, during the Hajj season in Saudi Arabia. For the second year, Muslims in Gaza were not able to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform the traditional pilgrimage. Since the Israeli genocidal war in Gaza started on October 2023, the occupation army has killed more than 54,600 Palestinians, most of them women and children, with over 125,500 others injured, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. The Israeli brutal war has destroyed large parts of Gaza and displaced around 90% of its population of roughly 2 million Palestinians. After blocking all food and aid from entering Gaza for more than two months, Israel began allowing a trickle of supplies to enter for the UN several weeks ago. But the UN says it has been unable to distribute much of the aid because of Israeli army restrictions on movements and because roads that the military designates for its trucks to use are unsafe and vulnerable to looters. The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome said Thursday that Gaza's people are projected to fall into acute food insecurity by September, with nearly 500,000 people experiencing extreme food deprivation, leading to malnutrition and starvation. 'This means the risk of famine is really touching the whole of the Gaza Strip,' Rein Paulson, director of the FAO office of emergencies and resilience, said in an interview. The UN says that the number of Gaza children facing acute malnutrition has soared since February, with more than 2,700 now suffering from it. Over the past two weeks, shootings have erupted nearly daily in the Gaza Strip in the vicinity of new hubs where desperate Palestinians are being directed to collect food. Witnesses say nearby Israeli troops have opened fire, killing more than 80 people. The US so-called Humanitarian Foundation, a newly formed group of mainly American contractors that Israel wants to use to replace humanitarian groups in Gaza that distribute aid in coordination with the UN, said Friday that all its distribution centers were closed for the day due to the ongoing Israeli violence. It urged people to stay away for their own safety, and said it would make an announcement later as to when they would resume distributing humanitarian aid. * This story was edited by Ahram Online. The Kaaba's Kiswa Was Once Made in Egypt

The Kaaba's Kiswa Was Once Made in Egypt Before it became the exclusive task of Saudi Arabia's Kiswah Factory in Mecca, the sacred cloth that drapes the Kaaba—the Kiswa—was once handwoven in Egypt. For centuries, the honour of producing this sacred textile belonged to Egyptian artisans whose needlework carried both craftsmanship and deep spiritual devotion. Nearly a century ago, a group of ten master weavers in Cairo spent an entire year crafting the Kiswa by hand, stitch by stitch, in preparation for its annual journey to Mecca ahead of Hajj. To trace this legacy, we spoke with Ahmed Shawqi Othman Al-Qasabji, grandson of the man who once led Egypt's Kiswa Authority. His grandfather, Othman Al-Qasabji, was at the helm of the operation in 1924, overseeing the meticulous process from the weaving of the black silk to the embroidery of Quranic verses in shimmering gold thread. 'Ten craftsmen worked for a year,' Ahmed recalls. 'It wasn't just a job. It was a form of worship.' Passed down through generations, the story of Othman's stewardship reads like a sacred inheritance. The workshop itself stands in Cairo's historic Darb El-Ahmar district, an unassuming space that housed a spiritual duty of monumental scale. The Kiswa was not merely a ceremonial object. It was a national pride, crafted with intention, reverence, and artistry. Egypt's last official contribution was in the 1920s, after which the production gradually moved to Mecca. Still, the memory remains alive. 'My wish,' Ahmed tells us, 'and I don't know if I have the right to ask for this, is for us to produce the Kiswa again.' It is a modest request, spoken with longing. But it holds weight. Because in those threads once spun on Egyptian looms, faith was made visible. And perhaps, in remembering, a revival isn't so far-fetched.
