Ten-man Derry pay the penalty against St Pat's
A penalty in each half from Aidan Keena handed 10-man Derry City their second defeat in four days as they lost 2-0 to St Patrick's Athletic in Richmond Park.
In between Keena's pair of spot-kicks, City's Carl Winchester was shown a straight red card for a strong challenge on Tottenham Hotspur-bound teenager Mason Melia.
Three points from their first four League of Ireland Premier Division games under new boss Tiernan Lynch leaves Derry second from bottom heading into Friday's fixture at home to Galway United.
The Foylesiders travelled to Inchicore having lost four of their past five matches away from home.
St. Pat's, managed by former Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny, came into the season as title favourites and picked up their first win of the campaign last Friday overcoming Sligo in a 4-3 thriller in Richmond Park.
While Derry did control the ball it was the home side who looked the most threatening and when Melia was upended in the City box referee Gavin Colfer had a think before pointing to the spot and providing Saints with the chance to open the scoring.
Keena made no mistake firing past Maher into the bottom left-hand corner.
The Candystripes reacted admirably to going a goal behind and were well in the contest going in at the break just 1-0 down.
But Winchester's contentious sending off changed the complexion of the game.
Pat's failed to create many clear-cut chances against the 10 men but when Keena was tripped inside the box the striker quickly dusted himself down and blasted the same way to the net from the spot for his fifth goal of the season to consign City to a third defeat in four games.

Kevin De Bruyne close to Napoli move as Man City contract expires
Kevin De Bruyne is reportedly close to finalising a move to Napoli following his Manchester City departure at the end of the season. The Belgian midfielder will become a free agent when his contract expires on 30 June and has been weighing up offers from several clubs. Advertisement Among them, Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire were thought to be serious contenders. However, Napoli have emerged as frontrunners and are now expected to secure his signature. Reports in Italy indicate the 33-year-old is nearing agreement on a three-year deal with the Serie A champions. The contract would reportedly pay €6 million per year for the first two seasons, dropping to €5 million in the third. De Bruyne is also set to receive a €10 million signing-on bonus due to his free-agent status. The salary package represents a major reduction from his Manchester City wages, where he earned around £400,000 per week. Yet the move appears to be driven by footballing and personal reasons rather than finances. Advertisement Sources close to the player say De Bruyne is eager to prove he can still perform at the highest level in European football. Lifestyle considerations have also influenced his decision, with his wedding having taken place in Sorrento, near Naples. Although De Bruyne admitted earlier this month that leaving City was not entirely his choice, he now seems focused on the next chapter. He received an emotional farewell from supporters after his final home appearance in City's 3-1 win over Bournemouth. De Bruyne is set to play his final match for the club on Sunday, when City visit Fulham in their last game of the season. A point would guarantee Champions League football for next season, a goal the veteran playmaker has stressed as vital. An official announcement of the Napoli deal is expected in the days following the Premier League finale. Various sources report that only final details remain before the move is made public. Advertisement Napoli, who secured the Serie A title last night for the second time in three years, are preparing for another Champions League campaign. With Antonio Conte expected to take charge, De Bruyne's arrival would signal an ambitious new era at the club. After nearly a decade of success in Manchester, the Belgian maestro appears ready for a fresh challenge on the Italian coast.

Mateo Kovacic issues nine-word statement following surgery setback and Manchester City absence
Manchester City's Mateo Kovacic has spoken for the first time on social media since the club confirmed the midfielder had undergone surgery on an Achilles injury. A statement issued by the club on Monday morning confirmed that the Croatia international would be absent from the club's upcoming FIFA Club World Cup campaign, with the understanding from the side of his national team being a three-month absence. Advertisement 'Manchester City can confirm that Mateo Kovacic has undergone surgery on an Achilles injury,' a statement issued from the Etihad Stadium read this week. 'The Croatian midfielder is now set to miss the FIFA Club World Cup as City head to the USA in June,' Manchester City added. 'Mateo will spend the summer rehabilitating from the operation and everyone at the Club wishes him a speedy recovery.' Speaking earlier on during the ongoing international break, Croatia manager Zlatko Dalić told a press conference on Kovacic, 'He had an injury and missed the [FA] Cup final. He thought rest would help, but it didn't. Advertisement 'Pain and swelling appeared, concerning the heel tendon. The Club decided he must undergo surgery. The recovery is expected to take about three months.' Now, having undergone surgery and made his first strides into a rehabilitation process alongside instruction from Manchester City, Mateo Kovacic has addressed supporters of both his club and country on Instagram. Accompanying a photo of himself emerging following surgery around an Achilles problem in his left foot, Kovacic wrote on social media, 'Surgery went well. Now patience, hard work, and faith.' Instagram: mateokovacic8 Manchester City are expecting to welcome midfield reinforcements in time for the start of the FIFA Club World Cup and the close of the mini-summer transfer window introduced to allow teams to make signings ahead of the tournament. Advertisement Operating in a similar role to Kovacic, there is confidence within the Etihad Stadium that Tijjani Reijnders will arrive on a long-term contract from AC Milan, while the club are continuing in their pursuit of Lyon's Rayan Cherki. The latter is viewed as a direct replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, after Manchester City bosses took the difficult decision of not renewing the Belgian's expiring contract, as such paving the way for him to complete a free transfer move to Serie A Champions Napoli in the coming days.
