Police search for suspect in connection with string of anti-Iranian graffiti in Richmond Hill

Police are investigating a string of incidents where hate-motivated graffiti was seen tagged on a number of stores and a bus terminal in Richmond Hill.
York Regional Police say they were called to a plaza in the area of Yonge Street and 16th Avenue on Saturday, where hate-related graffiti was sprayed onto a grocery store.
Officers say that same day, three other stores in that plaza reported anti-Iranian graffiti on the outside walls of their businesses. Later, police say they were notified of more markings reported at a bus terminal near Yonge Street and Highway 7.

Investigators believe a lone male suspect is behind all four incidents and describe him as being five-foot-10 with a thin build, weighing about 160 pounds with short brown hair.
Police say he was wearing a green, long-sleeve button-up shirt, skinny blue jeans with acid wash on the thighs and black shoes. They add that he is left-handed.

Winnipeg city council approved a package of sweeping housing zoning reforms overnight after days of debate. Council members proposed dozens of amendments in a hearing that went late into the night Thursday, but the reforms council approved did not change substantially from what city staff had recommended. Property owners can now build up to four units on all housing lots in the city, and buildings up to four storeys can be constructed within 800 metres of frequent transit, without the need for a public hearing, as long as they meet certain design standards. Critics of the changes say they take away the right of people to have a say on developments in their neighbourhoods. But Mayor Scott Gillingham said the city needed to make these changes to qualify for $450 million in federal housing funding from a number of different programs, including the housing accelerator fund. The mayor and other supporters say the new rules will lead to more homes being built faster, which will lower the cost of housing. In a news release, Gillingham said the changes will allow for a greater variety of housing in more neighbourhoods, making it easier for young workers, families and older adults to find a place to live. The city began the process of making these reforms in November 2023, when it agreed to implement zoning changes in exchange for receiving $122.4 million from the federal housing accelerator fund, which is intended to speed up housing construction. Other programs, like the Canada housing infrastructure fund and the Canada public transit fund, also made the money conditional on municipal governments making it easier to build housing.

Brantford men charged in multi-million-dollar contraband tobacco operation

Ontario Provincial Police said Abdelrahman Hasan, 28, and Saif Hasan, 20, both from Brantford, were arrested in April 2025, along with Omar Omran, a 25-year-old from Scarborough, and Nael Alwarasaneh, a 36-year-old from Burlington. All four were charged with trafficking contraband tobacco. According to media release sent out on Friday, the OPP's Contraband Tobacco Enforcement Team (CTET) began investigating 'a network of individuals based in the GTA' in January 2024. Then, on July 4 of that same year, they executed three search warrants in the GTA. OPP said they seized more than 800 kilograms of shisha tobacco, more than 16,000 contraband cigarettes and $30,000 in Canadian cash. The street value of the tobacco was estimated at around $90,000. Contraband tobacco bust Ontario police say they've seized $2.3 million worth of illegal shisha and cigarettes. (OPP) Another 16 search warrants were conducted in Brantford, Burlington, Mississauga, Vaughn and Scarborough on Oct. 24. In that bust, OPP said they found 19,000 kilograms of contraband tobacco, with an estimated street value of $2.3 million. They also seized a number of electronic devices. A Toronto man, 58-year-old Ali Mallah, was charged with trafficking contraband tobacco in November 2024.

Police investigating 'targeted' shooting in Kitchener
Police are investigating a shooting in Kitchener that happened on Thursday evening. Officers responded to a call in the area of Monte Carlo Street and Victoria Street South around 8:40 p.m. after multiple reports of gunfire. When police arrived they found that a group of youths were gathered outside a residential complex when an unidentified man approached them. Police say the man fired several gunshots into the ground before fleeing the area on foot. No one was injured. "Investigators believe this was a targeted incident," said a release sent out by Waterloo Regional Police on Friday morning. So far, no arrests have been made and police haven't shared a description of the suspect . Officers will remain in the area of the shooting for the rest of the day and are asking anyone with any information to call police or Crime Stoppers.
