Restrictions for Pennsylvania highways set ahead of upcoming winter storm
(WTAJ) — With snow and ice on the way throughout Pennsylvania, PennDOT has announced multiple highway restrictions that will go into effect as early as Wednesday evening.
The first set of restrictions will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, and are expected to last through the morning hours. Temperatures will be below freezing and may create icy hazards along with gusts of winds that could knock down trees.

We will update this story as restrictions get lifted on Feb. 6.
With tier 4 restrictions, no commercial vehicles are permitted. Additionally, all school buses, commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RVs/motorhomes and passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc.) with towing trailers are not permitted. Under Tier 2 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:
Tractors without trailers.
Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers.
Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers.
Tractors towing loaded tandem trailers without chains or Alternate Traction Devices (ATDs).
Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV.
Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV's, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers.
Recreational vehicles/motorhomes.
School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches, regardless of the availability of trains or ATDs.
Motorcycles.
If you must travel, you can be prepared by ensuring you have supplies in your cars before heading out: food, water, blankets, extra gloves and hats, cell phone charger, hand or foot warmers, windshield brush and scraper, and any specialized items like medications or baby and pet supplies.Drivers are also reminded that even after the winter weather comes through, Pennsylvania law requires you to clear off all snow and ice from your vehicles before driving.

2025 Freedom Ride approaching, group looking for more riders
ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — A month from now, hundreds of people will hit the streets with their bicycles to support veterans. It's for the annual Freedom Ride. It happens every year on July 4. The 10-mile ride starts at the Tyrone American Legion and continues to DelGrosso's Amusement Park and back. Fundraising effort helps revive Cambria County swimming pool All of the proceeds go to support veterans at the James E. Van Zandt Medical Center. John Harlow, a representative for Freedom Ride, said it's a great way to start the holiday. 'You see the whole community. It's great. You see 500 people getting together on the morning of the 4th of July, dressed up in their patriotic clothing. You'll see Uncle Sam, you'll see people dressed as the Statue of Liberty. It's a good time. It's fun. It's all family-friendly,' Harlow said. To register, the organization is asking for a donation of $20 for adults and $10 for children. Funding available for Somerset County residents affected by flooding
SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Residents who were impacted by the mid-May flooding may soon be getting some help from a local grant opportunity. The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies (CFA), along with the county, after the flooding, worked to establish the Somerset County Disaster Recovery Fund. This fund was intended to help residents recover from natural disasters like the flooding that was brought on by heavy rain. Applications for the Somerset County Disaster Recovery Fund Grant are now open and will be accepted until Wednesday, June 18. Nonprofit organizations, governmental entities, and religious organizations that are assisting residents with response and recovery may apply for a grant of up to $10,000. Pennsylvania is suing the USDA over cutting funding to a $1 billion food aid program for states Here are some eligibility requirements: Must be a 501(c)(3) organization, governmental entity, or religious organization. Applicants also must be registered and operate in Somerset County and be current on all taxes. Applicants for this first round of funding must be able to demonstrate and document the direct impact of the adverse weather events experienced in Somerset County on May 13-14. The applications will be reviewed by a committee that is made up of residents designated by the commissioners and emergency services. $10M invested into Pennsylvania airports from Shapiro Administration
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — PennDOT announced Wednesday a $10 million investment in projects for multiple airports throughout Pennsylvania, a huge priority for the Shapiro administration. Aviation is a vital industry in the state, employing over 226,000 people and providing nearly $12.5 billion in payroll and employment benefits. It also has a significant impact on the economy, generating $34 billion annually, so safe and reliable infrastructure is a main concern where these projects are concerned. The funds will support facility improvements, infrastructure preservation, and development in airports throughout the state, helping airports in Bucks, Lehigh, and Luzerne counties, while helping an airport in our region. DuBois Regional Airport in Jefferson County will receive $225,000 of the state investment for continued renovations of its administration building, according to PennDOT. 'Pennsylvania's aviation industry provides good-paying jobs while linking communities to a larger transportation system that moves goods and people around the world,' PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll stated. 'These investments are another example of Governor Shapiro's focus on maintaining our infrastructure while also expanding business opportunities.'
