Sergio Garcia buzzing for Open return as LIV Golf ace tees up hectic run in Ryder Cup bid
Spanish star
Sergio Garcia admits he's excited for an Open return and the key spell in his battle to also make the Ryder Cup.
The Spanish star will make his 26th bid for a Claret Jug after sealing a place in the 153rd Championship through his LIV placing.
Garcia clinched the cherished Portrush position at LIV Dallas and is now headed back to Europe for a run of vital events on two tours.
The 45-year-old is in Germany this week for the DP World Tour BMW International Open and will play on home soil in LIV again before heading to Northern Ireland.
Garcia is buzzing for the Open shot and said: 'It's going to be my second time playing at Royal Portrush, and it's obviously nice.
"It's one of the goals that you have at the beginning of the year, to try to play as many majors as you can with the limitations that we get.
"I didn't help myself very much the last three months, but I'm glad that I got enough work done in the first third of the year, in the first part of the season. I'm excited about it and, hopefully, I'll play well.
'It's a five-week stretch, so it's going to be Dallas, BMW Munich, Valderrama, British Open and JCB, so it's a big stretch.
"But thankfully I'm doing well physically, even at my age, and hopefully I'll be able to get through the five weeks well.'
Garcia firmly believes he still has the chance to convince captain Luke Donald he is worthy of a place in the Ryder Cup side for the clash against United States.
Europe's record points scorer feels he can be an asset and played alongside the skipper when the continent was last successful on away soil at Medinah in 2012.
Pre-Dallas, Garcia said: 'If they had told me I was going to be in this position and with a chance of being on the Ryder Cup team, obviously I would have taken it without a doubt.
"Now what I have to do is keep showing my strengths, keep showing my golf, especially what I showed in the first third of the year.
'The good thing is that I know I'm on Luke's ballot and I just have to keep showing that I can do good things and that I can help the team. The Ryder Cup is my favourite golf tournament in the world.
'It would be incredible to be able to compete in another Ryder Cup, especially knowing that in New York, at Bethpage, it's going to be tough and maybe a little experience always comes in handy.'
Garcia didn't contend in Dallas, but felt good signs as he said: 'It's been tough because I feel like I played a little bit better this week than I have been in the last couple of months.
"But both of my first rounds I finished terrible. I bogeyed three out of the last four in the first round and I shot six-over in the last seven holes yesterday [Saturday].
"So obviously I knew that I was putting myself in a tough spot, but I was able to play a little bit better today [Sunday]. I drove the ball better, hit a few more greens and I was able to make a couple putts here and there that were important.'

Former Chelsea wonderkid confirms retirement from football at just 28
Charly Musonda, once predicted to be a future superstar for Chelsea and Belgium, has retired from football at just 28 years old. The winger joined the Chelsea academy from Anderlecht in 2012 and big things were expected of him, starring in the Blues youth sides that racked up silverware at the time. However, he only ever made seven first team appearances for the Blues, spending time away from the club on loan at Real Betis, Celtic and Vitesse. Injuries badly hampered the Belgian and he eventually left Chelsea permanently in 2022 for Spanish side Levante, then moved to Cypriot outfit Anorthis a year later. Musonda left his final club last year and has now confirmed that he has hung up his boots for good. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. 'It took some time. I have been thinking about it for the last couple of years,' Musonda told Rising Ballers. 'Purely because of my own experiences and who I am as a person. 'I want to be doing things with purpose. I want to inspire and motivate people. I want to create opportunities. I am starting something new that will hopefully help players. 'Today, I have made a decision. It is a decision I have been wrestling with for a long time, but I am going to retire from professional football. It is not an easy decision, but I am building up towards the next stage now. 'I will still be involved in football. In roles to help players express themselves and giving them an opportunity to showcase how good they are. 'I'm still young but I want to help players who don't have the chance to showcase their talent. 'I know how it feels and with football changing so much, many players never get the opportunity to show what they can do, I want to make a difference.' Musonda's worst injury was picked up while on loan at Vitesse, suffering a knee problem which left doctors predicting he would never play again. He did make a return to the pitch and played for Chelsea's Under-23 side as he built back his fitness, but left Stamford Bridge when his contract ended in 2022, something which he says damaged him badly. 'The exit killed me. It killed me mentally. It was the worst thing,' he said. 'I was obviously with the reserves at that time so the plan was to pick up with the reserves, get some training in and if there were a few games where I could fit in toward the back end of the season, that was the plan. 'Because I literally had just gotten better. I came back in December-January and was training with the reserves. Feeling amazing, happy to be back—obviously it was a long way for me to be fully fit, but just being able to train was amazing. 'The first team was doing really well. It was COVID, so the buildings were split and you wouldn't really see the first team. More Trending 'Then toward the back end of the season in the car park I ran into Thomas Tuchel, the manager. 'They were getting ready for the semi-final of the Champions League and he just said, 'How are you feeling? How are things going?' 'It was my first time meeting him. He said, 'I'm looking forward to seeing you back' and I said, 'Don't worry, I'll be back for pre-season.' 'Because in my mind, it was always pre-season and I'd be back with the first team and we'd see from there. So I came back for pre-season and that's where things got tricky. That was the end of my time at Chelsea.' Katie Boulter rounds off record-breaking day at Wimbledon with stunning victory
The British number two sank Spanish ninth seed Paula Badosa 6-2 3-6 6-4 for only her fourth win over a top-10 player, and her first in more than a year. She said: 'I mean, it's certainly up there. Centre Court, Wimbledon, as a Brit, against a top-10 player, for me doesn't get that much better. 'It is one of the reasons why I do play tennis, to win matches like that, and to have a go at the best in the world. I do feel like it is one of the best ones for sure in my career. 'I can't tell you it's the top one, because there's been a few, but it's definitely been top three.' It meant seven heaven for Britain with Boulter and six other home stars through to round two, the highest total in a single day in the open era. It was also sweet revenge for Boulter, who lost in three sets to Badosa in their only other meeting, at the French Open last year. EPIC @katiecboulter WIN AT @Wimbledon 🔥 Katie knocks out the No.9 seed on Centre Court#BackTheBrits 🇬🇧 | #Wimbledon — LTA (@the_LTA) June 30, 2025 The 28-year-old had to wait until the early evening to start her match after Carlos Alcaraz's four-and-a-half-hour marathon against Fabio Fognini. But she seemed determined not to hang around, racing away with the first set in just 31 minutes, before the majority of the crowd had returned to Centre Court. Badosa's timing had seemed way off, but just as she rediscovered her rhythm, Boulter's deserted her with three double faults from 30-15 gifting her opponent a break to level the match. Boulter fell a break down in the decider but hit straight back and then struck at 5-4, breaking to 15 to win in an hour and 54 minutes. However, she revealed: 'I was bricking it completely. 'I've played a lot of matches recently where I started out great and kind of let it slip. I just tried to compete today and fight.' Boulter will face Argentinian lucky loser Solana Sierra in the second round on Wednesday.
