Murderbot — a new sci-fi series starring Alexander Skarsgård in the title role — premieres on streaming this week.
Created by Paul Weitz and Chris Weitz and executive produced by David S. Goyer, Murderbot is an AppleTV+ original series consisting of 10 episodes.
The official summary for the series reads, 'Based on Martha Wells' bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series The Murderbot Diaries, Murderbot is a sci-fi thriller/comedy about a self-hacking security construct who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable clients.
'Played by Skarsgård, Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.'
Murderbot also stars Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones and Tamara Podemski.
The first two episodes of Murderbot will arrive on AppleTV+ on Friday, May 16, at 12:01 PT/3:01 ET. After that, a new episode of the series will premiere every Friday at the same time through July 11.

As of this publication, Murderbot has received a 98% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 40 reviews.
The RT Critics Consensus for the series reads, 'Alexander Skarsgård's superbly dry wit brings a lot of heart to Murderbot, making for a refreshingly jaunty sci-fi saga about finally coming out of one's shell.'
Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone is among the top critics on RT who give the series a 'fresh' rating, writing, 'Murderbot isn't an exact recreation of the books — and it's too irreverent to be the kind of thing Murderbot would enjoy — but it's very fun and satisfying as its own thing.'
The series also earned a 'fresh' rating from Nina Metz of The Chicago Tribune, who writes on RT, 'Self-awareness means Murderbot has developed squishy qualities, like feelings. One of those feelings is the desire for self-determination ... paving the way for a new story in the series' next inevitable season.'
Also lauding Murderbot on RT is Lili Loofbourow of The Washington Post, who writes, It's a decidedly silly show, but one in which Skarsgard, who so brilliantly plays sociopathic men, portrays a disdainful but soft-eyed killing machine with a lot of anxious 'humanity.''
Eric Deggans of NPR also gives the series a 'fresh' review on RT, writing, 'Murderbot is the latest example of a trend I've noticed on streaming TV — exquisitely produced science fiction and fantasy shows that may not be seen outside of a small-yet-passionate fanbase.'
As of this publication, there is only one 'rotten' review from RT's group of top critics, which comes from Slant Magazine's Steven Nguyen Scaife. In his review on RT, Nguyen Scaife writes, 'The rogue security cyborg at the center of the series is less a vengeful killer than a quiet quitter.'
Murderbot begins streaming Friday at 12:01 a.m. PT/3:01 ET with a two-episode premiere on AppleTV+.

FanDuel bans bettor over heckling incident with Olympic champion sprinter Gabby Thomas
A sports bettor who heckled Olympic champion sprinter Gabby Thomas during a Grand Slam Track event in Philadelphia over the weekend has been banned by the betting site FanDuel Sportsbook. In a statement sent to The Associated Press on Wednesday, FanDuel wrote it 'condemns in the strongest terms abusive behavior directed towards athletes. Threatening or harassing athletes is unacceptable and has no place in sports. This customer is no longer able to wager with FanDuel.' Last weekend, Thomas finished fourth in a 100-meter race won by Melissa Jefferson-Wooden. The bettor wrote in a post on social media that he 'made Gabby lose by heckling her. And it made my parlay win.' He posted a picture of his parlay that had Jefferson-Wooden winning the 100. Thomas, the 200-meter champion at the Paris Games last summer, explained the heckling incident on X. She wrote: 'This grown man followed me around the track as I took pictures and signed autographs for fans (mostly children) shouting personal insults — anybody who enables him online is gross.' Grand Slam Track, a track league launched by Hall of Fame sprinter Michael Johnson this spring, wrote in a statement it was 'conducting a full investigation into the reprehensible behavior captured on video. 'We are working to identify the individual involved and will take appropriate action as necessary. We will implement additional safeguards to help prevent incidents like this in the future. Let us be clear, despicable behavior like this will not be tolerated.' ESPN first reported the bettor had been banned by FanDuel. The Grand Slam Track season wraps up with the fourth and final meet in Los Angeles on June 28-29. The Thomas incident is the latest in a string of stalking and abuse of female athletes. Frida Karlsson , a Swedish cross-country skiing world champion, recently brought her experience with stalking into public view when she went through a trial. A man in his 60s was given a suspended sentence and ordered to pay 40,000 kronor ($4,100) in damages after being convicted of stalking Karlsson for a year and four months, according to Swedish news agency TT. The man, according to the indictment, called Karlsson 207 times, left her voicemails and text messages and approached her, including outside her apartment. In February, police in the United Arab Emirates detained a man who caused British tennis player Emma Raducanu distress by exhibiting ' fixated behavior ' toward he at a tennis tournament. ‘We're definitely on the back foot': U.S. risks losing fusion energy race to China, industry leaders warn

(Zap Photo) REDMOND, Wash. — The race to lead in artificial intelligence isn't the only event in which the U.S. and China are competing for dominance. The pursuit of fusion — the 'Holy Grail' of clean energy — is also pitting the superpowers against each other, and American tech leaders worry China could surge ahead. At a Technology Alliance conference on Tuesday, Washington state companies building commercial fusion technologies raised concerns about China's strategy to pour resources into fusion. 'The U.S. is not committed to fusion. China is, by orders of magnitude,' said Ben Levitt, the head of R&D for Zap Energy, speaking on a fusion panel at the Seattle Investor Summit+Showcase. While the U.S. government spent approximately $800 million a year on fusion efforts during the Biden administration, China is investing more than twice that annually, IEEE Spectrum and others report. The Trump administration has taken action supporting nuclear fission, which powers today's nuclear reactors, but has not shown the same interest in fusion. The sector has become increasingly reliant on venture capital to fund its progress. China is also focused on training fusion physicists and engineers, while President Trump is slashing funding for scientific research. Fusion is so highly sought after given its potential to provide nearly limitless, carbon-free power, which could be critical to meet growing energy demands from AI applications and the global push to decarbonize transportation, the electrical grid, heating and cooling, industrial applications and elsewhere. 'The U.S. started with a very good hand in fusion and has played it extremely poorly,' Levitt said. 'So, yeah, we're definitely on the back foot.' The conference panel also included Brian Riordan, co-founder and chief operating officer of Avalanche Energy, and Anthony Pancotti, co-founder and head of R&D for Helion Energy. Riordan argued that while China appears to be making strides in the race, what matters even more is who develops the most affordable technology. But replicating the reactions that power the Sun and stars is massively challenging and requires technologies that can generate super high pressure and temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius, and sustain those conditions — plus efficiently capture the energy that fusion produces. In December 2022, the U.S. National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory hit a key milestone in fusion research, demonstrating that fusion reactions here on Earth could release more power than required to produce them. Images published in January revealed that China appears to be building a fusion research facility modeled on NIF — but even larger. Others suggest the site could be a giant Z-pinch machine — similar to the technology being pursued by Zap. Years ago, a Chinese website posted a graphic of a fusion device that bore a troubling resemblance to Helion's technology, the company has said. 'We have seen copycats in China already, and it is terrifying,' Pancotti said on Tuesday. 'They can mobilize people and money at a scale that is beyond even what venture capital can do in this country. And so I think there's real concern there, and there's real concern around supply chain, too.' Added Levitt: 'I wouldn't be surprised if every single one of our [fusion] concepts has a city designated to it in China.'
