4,900 train journeys and 2m passengers expected on holy sites metro over 7 days of Hajj
RIYADH: Trains on the Al-Mashaaer Al-Mugaddassah Metro Line are expected to complete a total of 4,900 journeys, carrying up to 2 million passengers, in the space of just seven days during Hajj.
The metro, known in English as the Sacred Sites Train Line, is a high-capacity rail system in Makkah that operates for only seven days a year, during Hajj, as a shuttle service to take pilgrims to and from holy sites.
Offering insights on Monday into the transportation systems that will serve pilgrims, Saleh Al-Zuwaid, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services, said comprehensive preparations have been taking place ahead of the annual pilgrimage across all travel sectors, including air, land, sea and logistics.
'So far, 3,314 flights from 238 destinations in 71 countries, via 62 air carriers, have arrived in the Kingdom,' he said.
There has been a 75 percent increase in the number of trips on Haramain High Speed Railway, compared with last year, he added, and a 'Hajj without Luggage' initiative allows pilgrims arriving in Saudi Arabia to travel to Makkah by train while their luggage is transported separately for convenience.
In addition, more than 25,000 buses have been provided to ensure the safe and comfortable movement of pilgrims, backed by an extensive inspections process, he said.
The latest technology, including artificial intelligence, is also being deployed to enhance transportation, Al-Zuwaid said. A fleet of vehicles equipped with AI is scanning the Kingdom's roads, from arrival ports to the holy sites, to help improve safety and ensure necessary maintenance is carried out. This year, these advanced technologies have helped to maintain 7,400 kilometers of roads leading to the holy sites.
Detailing advances in digital infrastructure, Saad Al-Shanbari, a spokesperson for Hajj communications and technology, said that 4G and 5G coverage in Makkah, Madinah and at the holy sites now exceeds 99 percent, with significant increases in internet speeds.
More than 10,500 Wi-Fi access points have been installed to enrich the digital experience for pilgrims, he added, and AI-powered crowd-management and specialized communication systems have been implemented in collaboration with Aramco Digital, to help ensure a reliable digital experience throughout Hajj season.
The spokespersons reaffirmed their commitment to providing the best possible services and encouraged pilgrims to adhere to official guidelines designed to enhance their experiences and ensure their safety.
Hajj begins on Wednesday, June 4, and will continue until Monday, June 9.

The billboards feature designs inspired by traditional motifs and crafts such as weaving, reflecting the national identity. These showcase the beauty of local arts and regional patterns and aim to enrich pilgrims' cultural experience and promote heritage tourism.

Three Saudi twin pairs unite to serve pilgrims at Hajj
MAKKAH: In a rare and coincidental alignment, this year's public service camps organized by the Saudi Arabian Scouts Association for Hajj have brought together three sets of Saudi twins. Hailing from the scout group of the Civil Development Association in Riyadh's Al-Rabie neighborhood, these six young men are united in their dedication to serving pilgrims, according to the Saudi Press Agency. The twins — Hussam and Issam Saeed Al-Qarni, Azzam and Ammar Suleiman Al-Sulaiman, and Walid and Muhannad Abdul-Hakim Al-Otaibi — are bound not only by family ties and similar appearances, but also by a shared passion for scouting and commitment to volunteer work and pilgrim service. Hussam and Issam said: 'Scouting was not just a passing activity, but a life path chosen with conviction from a young age.' They emphasized they were raised to love their country, and that scouting has allowed them to express this through guiding pilgrims, providing first aid, and offering various forms of assistance. They also stressed that 'every moment during the pilgrimages is a new lesson in patience, compassion, and discipline.' Azzam and Ammar said that the experience has deepened their bond, adding with pride: 'We thought we knew each other well, but in the atmosphere of the pilgrimages and under the pressure of tasks, we discovered new dimensions of cooperation and interdependence. 'We work as a team, complementing each other, and everything we do is for the comfort of the pilgrim, whom we consider our guest. It is our duty to provide them with the utmost comfort.' Walid and Muhannad Abdul-Hakim Al-Otaibi expressed their profound pride in participating, describing it as life-changing. 'Today, we are not only serving, but also learning how to stand calmly in the midst of a crowd, how to take initiative without expecting thanks, and how scouting can be a comprehensive educational field,' they said. 'Being here together, two brothers and twins, experiencing the same thing and sharing every detail, is something we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.'

Kingdom puts pilgrims' safety first during Hajj
Each year, millions of Muslims travel to Makkah, Madinah, and other holy sites to perform Hajj — the fifth pillar of Islam and a powerful act of faith, unity, and submission to Allah. In recent years, including this Hajj season, the Saudi government has made major efforts to ensure a safe, organized, and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage. Pilgrims now benefit from a wide range of services, including healthcare, transportation, logistics, guidance, and social support. These efforts support the Pilgrim Experience Program, part of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to enhance the overall pilgrimage experience. This year, pilgrims receive free medical care, with services expanded by more than 60 percent compared to previous years. Pilgrims will also benefit from major upgrades in digital infrastructure across Makkah, Madinah, and the holy sites. More than 9,000 4G and 5G stations now serve the area — a 6 percent increase from last year. Network capacity has been boosted with more than 2,000 km of upgraded fiber optic cables (up 7 percent), and more than 10,500 free Wi-Fi access points have been installed. To ensure smooth service, more than 4,000 digital professionals and engineers have been deployed. Pilgrims also have access to advanced digital banking via the Nusuk Wallet — the world's first international wallet integrated into the Nusuk platform. Launched last year by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, and the Saudi National Bank via its NEO digital arm, it enables pilgrims to manage transactions independently and with ease. To ensure a peaceful and well-organized Hajj, Saudi security authorities have enforced strict measures to maintain safety and order. These measures aim to prevent unauthorized activities, including performing Hajj without a valid permit. Violators face fines of up to SR20,000 ($5,300), with non-Saudis also subject to deportation and a re-entry ban of up to 10 years. These rules are not meant to block Muslims from fulfilling their religious duty, but to ensure the pilgrimage is safe, orderly, and well-regulated — especially with millions gathering in limited spaces. Effective crowd management is essential at key sites like Arafat and Muzdalifah to prevent overcrowding and reduce the risk of stampedes. The permit system plays a vital role in regulating the flow of pilgrims and ensuring their safety throughout the Hajj season. Obtaining a Hajj permit allows medical teams to better plan and respond to health emergencies, such as dehydration and heat exhaustion, which are common during the pilgrimage. It also supports government efforts to manage infrastructure and services, including roads, transportation, accommodation, healthcare, and food, ensuring the holy sites can meet pilgrims' needs. The permit system helps maintain order, minimizing disruptions and allowing pilgrims to focus on their spiritual journey in a safe, well-organized environment. It also enables efficient coordination among authorities for the smooth delivery of essential services.
