BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – 97-year-old Ed Cox of Binghamton has done it again, competing in a high-profile running tournament over the weekend.
Cox ran in the 80 years old and older division of the 100-meter race at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia on Saturday. Cox says he ran some in high school but then largely gave it up during his decades long career as a family practice physician.
He took up running and competing at age 70 and at age 90 recorded the fastest time in the world for his age and for that year. Saturday's outdoor race was very rainy and Cox came in last among 8 competitors, but the next oldest to him was 85, 12 years younger.
'It's a lot, it's a big difference. Once you hit 90, the change it accelerates. At 70, you're still pretty sparky on the running. But when you get to the end of 80 and into 90, it's really pretty noticeable,' Cox said.
Cox says he plans to keep running competitively for as long as he can. He frequently trains at the Binghamton University outdoor track. Cox plans to compete a couple more times this season.

Pleasant Grove departs to Round Rock for state championship

TEXARKANA, TX (KTAL/KMSS) – On Thursday morning, the Pleasant Grove Hawks headed down to Round Rock in search of its first state title since 2021. 'Really excited, amped up, a little anxious for the game even though we're a day early, but super excited to go out there and just play with the boys and it's gonna be a lot of fun,' junior Jace Elrod said. 'We've been talking about this game our entire lives, but this week I've heard about this game more times than I can count, so it's gonna be something special.' This group of Hawks have played baseball together almost their whole lives, making this opportunity extra special. 'We've grown up playing together since we were, I mean, 3rd, 4th grade. We played travel ball our whole lives with each other, so it means a lot,' junior Walker Wright said. 'I wouldn't want to do it with any other group. We put a lot of work in this this offseason and then into the season, so I'm really happy for it.' Pleasant Grove plays Calallen for the 4A-DI state championship on Friday, June 6. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Poplar Springs hosts 15th annual summer showdown

HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) — For two weeks each summer, rural Holmes County transforms into a hub for high school basketball as Poplar Springs hosts its annual Summer Showdown. Now in its 15th year, the tournament has become a staple of the off-season. The varsity boys portion of the event tipped off Monday and Tuesday, and wrapped up its final day of action on Thursday morning. The competition has featured teams from across the Florida Panhandle and Alabama's Wiregrass region, playing in round-robin matchups from sunup to sundown across both the new and old gymnasiums at Poplar Springs School. Twelve local teams from Walton, Calhoun, Jackson, Washington, and Holmes counties took part in the three-day event. Poplar Springs head boys basketball coach Jared Owen said the summer tournament provides a rare and valuable opportunity for programs to test themselves in unique conditions. 'Some teams you see on a regular basis, some teams you see just during the summer,' Owen said. 'So there's exciting opportunities and chances throughout. Then you get to see a lot of how your players respond to different teams and different disadvantages, like playing back-to-back. You don't do that during the season, but you do during the summer.' Week two of the summer basketball round-robin action will continue with the varsity girls basketball teams on June 9, 10, and 12. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The race to find a thief: Berlin police investigating after Torch Run signs were stolen

BERLIN, Conn. (WTNH) — Anticipation and excitement surround the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics each year in Berlin. Year after year, students line the route in front of their school to cheer on the officers. Annual Special Olympics Torch Run begins in Connecticut This year, there was also disappointment. The signs, which usually line Veterans Way, were stolen sometime between Monday when they were placed there, and Wednesday, when Mark DePinto, the officer who organizes Berlin's leg of the run, realized they were gone. 'He works very hard for this to come out perfect and that was like a setback to him,' Carmen DePinto, Mark's wife, said. It was too late to replace the signs before Thursday's torch run. The signs show the businesses and organizations which support the torch run and the Special Olympics. DePinto's daughter Christine is one of the athletes. On the day of the race, she rides in the truck which leads the police officers through town. 'She gets excited to be part of it every year,' DePinto said. 'She gets so excited she don't even want to go to her job.' 'It's just… it's hard to understand why somebody would pull those signs out and take them for a cause as good as the Special Olympics,' Berlin Deputy Police Chief Drew Gallupe said. Berlin police have launched a full investigation and say whoever is responsible will face larceny charges. 'We're reviewing video from surrounding businesses and we would ask anyone that has information or saw someone taking the signs or knows who took them if they would call us at the Berlin Police Department,' Gallupe said. Berlin police say there were about a half a dozen signs stolen from Veterans Way and because of that, those businesses and organizations didn't get the recognition they deserve for supporting this worthy cause. One of them was a local fire department. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
