Public disorder breaks out in Northern Ireland town Ballymena after alleged sexual assault

Public disorder broke out in Ballymena in Northern Ireland, with police saying a number of missiles had been thrown towards officers after crowds gathered near the site of an alleged sexual assault in the town. The unrest follows a protest in the area, about 30 minutes's drive from the capital city of Belfast, earlier on Monday evening, the police statement said, adding damage had been reported to a number of properties. Police advised motorists and pedestrians to avoid the Clonavon Road area and said they would remain on the scene to monitor the situation. 'We are urging everyone to remain calm and to act responsibly,' said chief superintendent Sue Steen. 'Violence and disorder will only place people at greater risk. Our priority is to keep the community safe, and I would appeal to everyone to work with us to bring calm to the area as quickly as possible.' Local media reported people with their faces masked were seen throwing masonry and a police car had two of its windows smashed. Protesters gathered after two boys appeared in court after an alleged serious sexual in Clonavon Road, media reported. On Sunday, police announced that detectives investigating a serious sexual assault on a teenage girl in the Clonavon Terrace area of Ballymena had charged two teenage boys. With Reuters

Public disorder breaks out in Northern Irish town, with missiles thrown at police

LONDON, June 9 (Reuters) - Public disorder broke out in Ballymena town centre in Northern Ireland following a protest reportedly over an alleged sexual assault case on Monday, with police saying a number of missiles had been thrown towards officers. The unrest follows a protest in the area, about 45 km (30 miles) from the capital city of Belfast, earlier on Monday evening, the police statement said, adding damage was reported to a number of properties. Social media footage, purportedly showing the disorder, captured plumes of fire near what appeared to be residential buildings, with police present at the scene. Another clip appeared to show a masked man throwing an object at police vans as a crowd looked on. Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of these clips. "We are urging everyone to remain calm and to act responsibly," Chief Superintendent Sue Steen said in the police statement. BBC News reported that hundreds of protesters had gathered in Ballymena in response to a case involving two teenage boys who appeared before Coleraine Magistrates' Court earlier in the day, accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl in the County Antrim town. Irish media outlet RTE News reported that the teenagers, who it said are Romanian and spoke through an interpreter, cannot be identified because of their ages. A separate police statement from Sunday said two teenage boys had been charged with attempted rape in connection with a serious sexual assault on a teenage girl in Ballymena on Saturday evening.

Boy stabbed to death was 'funny, caring and hardworking', family say

A "funny, caring and hardworking" 14-year-old boy who was fatally stabbed in north Manchester has been named as Ibrahima Seck. Ibrahima was found with stab wounds in New Moston after Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of a serious assault around 5pm on Sunday. Despite the efforts of the emergency services and air ambulance staff, he died in hospital. In a statement released by Greater Manchester Police, the teenager's parents said: "Ibrahima was a well-liked young boy. He was funny, caring, and hardworking. "He was our best friend." They added: "He was so smiley and always made everybody laugh. He was a good boy. "Why would anyone do this to him? He does nothing wrong." Police have detained a 14-year-old boy on suspicion of murder after having arrested two boys aged 14 and 16 on suspicion of the same charge. A 14-year-old girl and a 37-year-old woman are being held on suspicion of assisting an offender. Ibrahima ran to a nearby house after being injured, according to the Manchester Evening News, and told the resident: "I don't want to die." "He just came through the door and said, 'I've been stabbed'," they told the newspaper. "We sat him down on a chair and phoned an ambulance. "He just kept saying, 'I don't want to die'." Detective Chief Inspector Tony Platten said: "Firstly, the force and I would like to pass on our condolences to Ibrahima's loved ones and we will continue to support them at this sad time. "This incident that has seen a young boy sadly die has understandably rocked the local community in New Moston. "We have made significant headway in the investigation which has seen us arrest another suspect on suspicion of murder, that takes the arrest total up to five and we are continuing with questioning those suspects today."
