Javed Akhtar doesn't think India-Pakistan situation will get better politically: 'It's a bit late for reconciliation'

Noted lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar said on Friday that he is doubtful that the relations between India and Pakistan will improve in the near future. Referring to South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, a process that allowed victims and perpetrators of apartheid to come together, Javed said India and Pakistan missed a similar opportunity after Partition, which caused massive displacement and trauma on both sides. "It is a bit late in the day for reconciliation. Our people in India only knew what happened to them after 1947-48. The people over there knew what happened with them. If only all of them had sat together once.... It has been 75 years, they would be in their 90s now. How many of them would even be alive?" he said at the launch of a book titled Farewell Karachi, written by film critic-author Bhawana Somaaya.
Javed said the governments of the two countries should have brought together refugees from both sides in the early or mid-1950s and let them share their stories.
"Only then would we have truly known what happened to whom and what kind of atrocities were faced by how many people. It would not have remained one-sided. But this did not happen. Anyway, the situation in the near future, I do not think, will get much better politically," the 80-year-old writer said.
Hostilities between India and Pakistan intensified following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists, on April 22. In response, Indian armed forces hit nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on May 7 under the codename Operation Sindoor.
Javed criticised vested interest groups in Pakistan, particularly the army, the political establishment and the extreme right wing, for blocking peace efforts between the two nations.
"There are crores of people in Pakistan today who want better relations with India -- not just because some are genuinely good people, but because many are drawn to India's scale and progress -- its big corporates, opportunities, cinema, business, IT and industrial growth.
"They are fascinated by the kind of research and development happening here. That is why a common person or a student from there aspires to come to India and be part of that world. But unfortunately, this is not in the interest of Pakistan's army, establishment or right wing. That is the real issue," he said.
Javed said India tried hard to improve relations, both diplomatically and culturally, while Pakistan has not reciprocated at the same level.
"Our Army is very professional, they are not at all political. But it is not like that there (Pakistan). People say every country has an army and the Pakistani army has a country. So this is the difference," he said.
"This does not mean that we do not have bad people here and we have never done anything wrong. But the truth is that in this matter, the Indian government has been better than the Pakistani government in the last 70 years," he added.
Despite the tensions, Javed said India has never acted in an "aggressive" way.
"There is such a big dispute in Kashmir.... In spite of our claim, we have never been aggressive. In fact, many people complain, 'why are you not aggressive?' We are not that. So the aggression has always been from that side. So this is not right," he said.
Javed was accompanied by his actor wife, Shabana Azmi, at the event.

Amit Shah accuses Bengal CM of opposing Op Sindoor: ‘Killing of terrorists troubling Mamata Banerjee'

Home minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched a scathing attack on West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of 'opposing' Operation Sindoor. "Under Operation Sindoor, we conducted a deep strike 100 kilometers into Pakistan, targeting their headquarters. Numerous terrorists were killed, but this seems to trouble Mamata Ji" Shah said while addressing party leaders and workers in Kolkata. Shah also reiterated that Operation Sindoor — India's military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack – was not over. "...Mamata Banerjee may favour the Pakistani terrorists as much as she wants, but I want to tell her that this is PM Modi's government and Operation Sindoor is not yet over. Anyone who dares anything will be given a proper answer..." he said, according to ANI news agency. Shah also alleged that Mamata Banerjee was opposing Operation Sindoor to appease the Muslim vote bank. Mamata Banerjee had recently accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP of trying to exploit Operation Sindoor — India's military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack – for political gains. During Sunday's speech, Amit Shah said that the communal violence in Murshidabad in April was 'state sponsored' and the accused the Mamata Banerjee-led government of opposing the deployment of BSF. 'The MHA kept on insisting about the deployment of BSF during the Murshidabad riots, but the TMC government didn't allow it to happen so that the violence could continue,' Shah alleged, according to PTI. He also alleged that the TMC government in the state was facilitating illegal infiltration from Bangladesh. 'We requested land to build a fence along the border, which would effectively prevent infiltration from Bangladesh into India. However, you have deliberately avoided providing the required land, allowing unchecked infiltration to continue and thereby expanding your vote bank,' Shah said. 'It is evident that your priority lies in securing your nephew's political succession rather than addressing the pressing issue of border security,' he added.

Amit Shah accuses Mamata Banerjee of opposing Op Sindoor, Waqf Act to appease vote bank

Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched a blistering attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee , accusing her of "opposing" Operation Sindoor and the Waqf Amendment Act to appease the Muslim vote bank. Shah, addressing party leaders and workers here, also alleged that the recent riots in Murshidabad were "state-sponsored". "To appease the Muslim vote bank, Mamata didi opposed Operation Sindoor. By doing so, she is insulting the mothers and sisters of this country. In 2026 (assembly polls), the mothers and sisters of the state would teach the CM and the Trinamool Congress a lesson for criticising Operation Sindoor," he said. "The MHA kept on insisting about the deployment of BSF during the Murshidabad riots, but the TMC government didn't allow it to happen so that the violence could continue," he alleged. At least three people died and several others were injured in the communal riots in Murshidabad during protests over the Waqf law. Responding to the TMC's criticism of the BSF's inability to stop infiltration, the senior BJP leader said the Mamata Banerjee-led government has not given the required land to the BSF. "Once the TMC government gives BSF the required land, we will stop infiltration," he said. "But, Bengal's ruling party would never give land to the BSF, as it wants the infiltration to continue so that it can remain in power," Shah claimed.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The move is significant, as Bihar assembly polls are around the corner. Jandullah Dad Mohammad, an Afghan national from the volatile Paktika province, impersonating as Rehan, son of Kabir, was residing at Patna's Wakil Anwer House along with his brother Mansur. After entering India on a six-day medical visa in December 2019, he vanished from Delhi's radar. By 2020, he had acquired a full suite of fake Indian IDs. His EPIC (AFS3853934), Indian passport (C6978659), Aadhaar card (322874855132), PAN card (ETXPR8222K), driving license (BR0120210005369), SBI bank passbook (39914603822), municipal corporation Patna issued birth certificate (B-2019 10-90097 025254), and even a ration card painted a convincing picture of an Indian citizen. 'We are now preparing to revoke the EPIC AFS3853934 issued in the name of Rehan, son of Kabir,' said electoral registration officer (ERO) Raghvendra Pratap Singh. The accused foreign national is currently lodged in Lucknow jail after being caught by Bureau of Immigration from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport on May 19 evening. The ECI's consolidated electoral list, published on January 7, 2025, under a special summary revision, revealed that the Wakil Anwer House has 12 male occupants, all in their 20s and 30s except one, with no women registered. At least four of them shared identical details: Same age, same father's name (Kabir), and EPICs. Kabir's real identity has been established as Dad Mohammad Khan. His elder son Mansur who left for Dubai more than six months ago, is registered in electoral roll with two EPICs AFS4130290, AFS4127999. Another resident, Mohammad Sher Khan, also had dual EPICs: AFS4129953 and AFS4125266. 'Currently, Kabir is absent from Wakil Anwer House, with no confirmation of his existence, though locals confirm his presence in Patna 7-8 years ago. We have cancelled Mansur's and Mohammad Sher Khan's EPICs . One individual cannot have two EPICs,' said ERO Raghvendra. He added, 'The owner of Wakil Anwer House has not returned to Patna from New Delhi till date. He has now assured to return around June 9, following which he would furnish details of everyone living in his property.'
