Wanted: Parking sheds at metro stations across city

Hyderabad: With the rise in temperature, daily metro passengers raised concerns over the lack of shed parking facilities at several metro stations especially at JBS Parade Ground metro station. They urged the metro authorities to install proper sheds at the parking premises.
Daily metro commuters have raised concerns, questioning the purpose of paid parking when there is no security for their vehicles. The parking facility at JBS Parade Ground Metro Station stands as a clear example, with a large number of vehicles left parked under the open sky for hours without any protection. A recent incident at Kukatpally, where a vehicle failed to start due to extreme heat, has further heightened worries among metro users. Many commuters have complained that, especially during the summer, they are facing significant hardships.
Ramesh Reddy, a metro commuter, said, 'There is no proper maintenance at metro parking areas — no adequate security, no proper sheds — we are forced to park our vehicles in open grounds. Though metro rail is a fast mode of transport and slightly expensive, we still choose it for daily travel. However, despite paying parking fees every day, there is no security for our vehicles. I personally face hardship daily; due to the scorching heat, my bike often struggles to start. It would be better if the concerned officials provide proper sheds in the parking areas.'
Sai Teja, another daily commuter, said, 'Metro officials are charging parking fees without providing even basic amenities. There isn't even a simple shed in the parking premises. Considering the current rise in temperatures, this raises serious safety concerns. It appears that the concerned officials are more focused on minting money rather than offering proper basic facilities.'
Robin, another daily commuter, said, 'The tenders given for metro parking seem to lack transparency. For years, I have been raising concerns about the need to provide proper sheds at parking facilities, but all my efforts have fallen on deaf ears. I even filed a Right to Information (RTI) request with the Ministry of Petroleum, asking if any study was conducted on petrol evaporation from vehicles due to heat; however, no study has been conducted so far. Similarly, metro station parking areas remain uncovered, posing risks to vehicles. It is high time the concerned officials take action and provide proper amenities.'

Pakistani Influencer Sana Yousaf Shot Dead By Man She Rejected "Again And Again"

Pakistani social media influencer Sana Yousaf was shot dead at her home in Islamabad by a man she rejected "again and again", authorities said. The teenager, who celebrated her 17th birthday on May 29, was killed on June 2 in front of her mother and aunt. Islamabad Police on Monday arrested the main suspect, 22-year-old Umar Hayat, a resident of Faisalabad, around 320 km from the capital. "A monster, cold-blooded murderer is now in the law's grip," said Islamabad Inspector General Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi at a press conference. He said Hayat tried to contact Ms Yousaf persistently but was "rejected by her again and again." The suspect wanted to "become friends" with Ms Yousaf and made repeated attempts to connect with her, Mr Rizvi said. On the day of the murder, Umar Hayat made an attempt to meet Ms Yousaf for several hours but failed. After multiple rejections and no response, he forcefully entered her home and shot her, police said. "First, it was a cellular rejection. Now, it was a physical mode of rejection," Mr Rizvi said. The First Information Report (FIR) filed by Ms Yousaf's mother says the shooter barged in with a pistol around 5 pm and shot the 17-year-old at point-blank range. Two bullets struck her in the chest. She was rushed to the hospital but could not be revived. According to police, Umar Hayat completed only his matriculation and came from a lower-middle-income background with "no source of income." Investigators say he took Ms Yousaf's mobile phone with him after the shooting, likely in an attempt to erase evidence. "Attempts were made to give the incident another angle," Mr Rizvi added, "even though the aim of taking the mobile was to wipe out the clues." Both the phone and the murder weapon were later recovered. Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed on X that the accused confessed to the murder and that the weapon had been found. Earlier reports speculated the shooting was carried out by a relative or a guest, and may have been a case of dishonour killing. Police soon ruled out that angle. "It was a blind murder; there were no leads, and things were not clear," Mr Rizvi said, describing the probe as "very challenging." He said the suspect's arrest followed multiple search operations, three in Islamabad and eight across other cities.

No pay for months, Karnataka NREGA contract staff on protest leave

MYSURU: Nearly 4,000 contractual staff with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGA) scheme have not been paid for the last five to seven months. Though the staff, who are responsible for creating employment in rural areas under the programme, have approached top officials and appealed for the payment of pending salaries, nothing has been done. The staff that have not been paid include engineers, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) workers and field staff. With no sign of salaries, they have resorted to a protest and applied for mass casual leave, boycotting work. They have also staged demonstrations in front of zilla panchayat offices across the state. The tragic story is the same even in Mysuru, the home district of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. These coordinators are crucial in ensuring that the rural folk get 100 days of employment per year under the scheme. Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge has written to Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for urgent intervention for the immediate release of pending wages, material and administrative funds to ensure livelihoods of lakhs of scheme beneficiaries and maintenance of administrative efficiency. The lack of funds has affected routine operations, supervision and ground-level implementation.
