
Shehbaz, Hamza acquitted in corruption reference
LAHORE:
An anti-corruption court in Lahore on Thursday approved the plea of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz for acquittal in the Ramzan Sugar Mills drain case filed by NAB about eight years ago.
Anti-Corruption Court Judge Sardar Muhammad Iqbal Dogar pronounced the verdict, which had been reserved since February 3. The judge acquitted Shehbaz and Hamza, ruling that punishment was unlikely in the case against them.
On July 11, 2017, NAB had initiated inquiry on allegations that Shehbaz Sharif, the then Punjab chief minister, and Hamza got a drain constructed in 2015for the family's Ramzan Sugar Mills in Chiniot at the government expenses, hence causing a loss to Rs 213 million to the national exchequer.
Shehbaz was arrested by NAB on October 5, 2018. Shehbaz and Hamza were indicted on corruption charges on April 9, 2019, after which Hamza was also arrested on June 11, 2019. Both were re-indicted in case on August 6, 2020, after new evidence led to a supplementary reference filed in the court.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif expressed hailed the verdict and congratulated PM Shahbaz and Hamza for their acquittal in the case. Senior Punjab Minister Maryam Aurangzeb also hailed the acquittal of the Sharifs.
Talking to a private TV channel, she highlighted that no wrongdoing by Shehbaz and Hamza was proven in the court. Aurangzeb lambasted the PTI, stating that the case was a "prime example of political vendetta" by then prime minister Imran Khan.

KP govt to present Rs2trn budget today
PESHAWAR: The KP government is set to unveil its provincial budget of Rs 2,000 billion for the next fiscal year 2025-26, with over Rs 1800 billion allocated for current expenditures. A sum of Rs 433 billion will be allocated under the Annual Development Programme, including funding for the newly merged tribal districts. As part of the new fiscal year's initiatives, the government will declare an 'education emergency' and provide furniture to 100% of public schools, the sources said. A surplus budget Rs 180 billion will be presented. According to the sources, KP has set a target of 40% growth in tax revenue once again. No new tax to be introduced and focus will be on broadening the tax base and improving enforcement, sources added. Additionally, Rs 50 billion will be earmarked for the Accelerated Implementation Programme (AIP), Rs 175 billion for foreign project assistance, and Rs 29 billion under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). Around 500 new development schemes will also be introduced under the annual development programme for next fiscal year. The provincial budget for next fiscal year 2025-26 will be presented during a special session of the budget on Friday (today), at 3:00 pm. According to the sources, the provincial expenditure for the upcoming year is estimated at Rs 1,800 billion. Major allocations will go toward education and the Sehat Card programme, signaling a strong focus on public welfare, the sources said. While there is no salary increase proposed in the new budget, a reduction in income tax on salaries is under consideration, the sources added. The budget included several initiatives to support vulnerable, marginalised, and low-income populations. Key infrastructure and welfare projects, such as the Peshawar-DI Khan Motorway, a new electricity transmission line, and the establishment of an insurance company, will receive funding. Additionally, Safe City projects in Peshawar, Bannu, and DI Khan will be supported financially, and the education budget will be increased by 13%. Furthermore, the monthly honorarium for artists will rise from Rs 100,000 to Rs 150,000. A significant focus of the development budget will be on completing ongoing projects. Priority will be given to projects that are 80% or more complete, followed by those at 60% completion. The number of new development projects will be capped at 500, with Rs 195 billion to be immediately released and up to Rs250 billion allocated as needed. A special committee will be formed for approving projects based on priority and necessity. The budget will continue to prioritise the education, health, and social welfare sectors, while the 13-year throw-forward period for the Annual Development Program (ADP) will be reduced to seven years. A new safari park in Misri Banda, Nowshera, is also part of the fiscal year's plans. The federal government is expected to allocate Rs 1,342.78 billion to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from the divisible pool for FY2025-26, raising the province's overall budget to approximately Rs 2,000 billion. The revised allocation for FY2024-25 stood at Rs 1,135.66 billion, lower than the expected Rs 1,221.53 billion. The merged tribal districts will receive a Rs 40 billion subsidy in the energy sector, a decrease from Rs 65 billion in the current fiscal year. Additionally, the federal government will provide Rs 80 billion in special grants to these areas, up from Rs 66 billion allocated last year. Under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), the merged districts will receive Rs 65.44 billion, compared to Rs70 billion in the current year. According to Advisor to the Chief Minister on Finance, Muzzammil Aslam, a 40% rise in tax revenue this year. The budget is also likely to propose cuts in property tax and introduce various welfare schemes. These include solarisation projects and emergency funds for education and health. Bilawal-led MPs reach Brussels to counter Indian narrative
BRUSSELS: Pakistan's diplomatic delegation led by former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has reached Brussels, the European Union headquarters after successful visits to Washington, New York and London. The purpose of the visit of the delegation appointed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is to present Pakistan's position on the recent tensions with India and highlight the importance of resolving the Jammu and Kashmir issue in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and the wishes of the Kashmiri people, a news release said Thursday. The delegation will hold meetings with senior officials of the European Union and Belgium. On arrival in Brussels, the delegation was warmly welcomed by Pakistan's Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg Rahim Hayat Qureshi and officials posted at the Pakistani Embassy. The parliamentary delegation will inform the European authorities about India's anti-Pakistan intentions and aggressive actions. It will give an effective response to the 'Indian disinformation campaign' regarding India's aggression and the Indo-Pakistan conflict. Along with the European authorities, the parliamentary delegation is also scheduled to meet leading European think tanks and international media representatives in Brussels. 'If India blocks our water, war will be inevitable,' Bilawal Bhutto Zardari cautioned Modi government. The PPP chairman asserted that Pakistan's position on key issues is 'truthful and robust.' He said Pakistan's efforts in the fight against terrorism are recognized and acknowledged in the United States. Bilawal stated, 'The US is well aware of how we deal with terrorist groups.' The former FM further added that the US has observed up close how Pakistan has taken action against all extremist groups. He also underlined Pakistan's compliance with international standards, saying, 'Pakistan has completed the entire FATF process.' Earlier, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari called on the UK's government to continue playing a proactive role in promoting de-escalation and facilitating dialogue between Pakistan and India. He was talking to UK's Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Pakistan Hamish Falconer in London, while leading high-level parliamentary delegation of Pakistan. The discussions focused on addressing escalating regional tensions following recent Indian military provocations. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari commended the UK's efforts and statements by its leadership on the importance of restraint, engagement, dialogue and diplomatic path forward.

PEMRA initiates legal proceedings against M-Tel Communications
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has initiated legal proceedings against M/s M-Tel Communications (Private) Limited, Lahore, after three post-dated cheques submitted by the company — amounting to Rs 7,575,000 — were dishonoured by the bank. The company owes PEMRA a total of Rs3 3,645,963 in outstanding dues. Despite repeated reminders and flexibility granted in the form of post-dated cheques, the company failed to honour the payments. As a result, the PEMRA has filed a formal application at the relevant police station under Section 33(3) of the PEMRA Ordinance 2002, amended through the PEMRA (Amendment) Act 2023. The case has also been referred under Section 489-F of the Pakistan Penal Code 1860 for criminal proceedings. The PEMRA has issued a stern warning to all its licensees to ensure timely clearance of dues, failing which strict action will be taken in accordance with the law. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
