Eagles OTAs: 5 biggest battles for starting jobs, key roles begin at these positions

PHILADELPHIA − It's foolhardy to get carried away with anything that transpires during the Eagles' organized team activities that begin May 27.
After all, the players are in shells and shorts, and the first game is still more than three months away.

Yet there are still things that the Eagles can learn about themselves, and some of those things could be vital towards repeating as Super Bowl champions.
The Eagles are doing all of this in a shortened window. Most teams will have 10 OTA sessions over three weeks, plus a three-day mandatory minicamp the week of June 16 before going on break until the start of training camp in late July.

The Eagles, conversely, are holding only six OTA sessions − three each the week of May 26 and June 2 − and just one mandatory minicamp session on June 10.
That's understandable. The Eagles' season didn't end until the Super Bowl on Feb. 9, a month after 18 non-playoff teams ended their seasons.
And that shortened spring schedule is helpful for veteran players like running back Saquon Barkley, who had by far the biggest workload of his career in 2024 with 482 touches, including playoffs. That was 105 more touches than his previous career high, set in 2022.
That's also true for most of the Eagles' starters.

But the spring OTAs are valuable in that they provide an opportunity for the younger players to at least make their case for a role on the 2025 team. And surprisingly for a Super Bowl champion, there are many of these jobs up for grabs.
Here, then, are 5 key battles that will begin during the spring OTAs:
Sydney Brown #21 of the Philadelphia Eagles reacts after forcing a fumble in the first quarter of a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lincoln Financial Field on Nov. 3, 2024, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Safety: Sydney Brown vs. Drew Mukuba
When the Eagles traded C.J. Gardner-Johnson to Houston in March, Eagles GM Howie Roseman made it a point to say that Brown, the Eagles' third-round draft pick in 2023, would get the first crack at the safety spot. Roseman added that Brown hasn't really had a chance to prove himself, mainly because of a torn ACL suffered in the 2023 regular-season finale.

Then the Eagles drafted Mukuba at the end of the second round in April. A strong OTA for Mukuba will put the heat on Brown when training camp starts in late July. If both are underwhelming, expect the Eagles to go after a veteran free agent, such as Justin Simmons.
Defensive back Cooper DeJean (33) and cornerback Kelee Ringo (22) take part in warmups with defensive tackle Thomas Booker as the Philadelphia Eagles work out in preparation for the Super Bowl at the NovaCare Complex in Philadelphia on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025.
Cornerback: Kelee Ringo vs. Cooper DeJean vs. Mac McWilliams
The situation at safety is similar to outside cornerback after the Eagles released veteran Darius Slay, who then signed with the Steelers. Like Brown, Ringo was a 2023 draft pick (fourth round) who hasn't had many opportunities.
But the Eagles could also try DeJean on the outside even though he played so well last year in the nickel spot. That would open up the nickel spot for McWilliams, the Eagles' fifth-round pick, or possibly Mukuba if the Eagles are comfortable with Brown at safety.

For now, all of the options are on the table. That's when Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will begin mixing and matching to find his top five defensive backs.
Philadelphia Eagles guard Tyler Steen (R) and offensive tackle Fred Johnson (50) run drills during practice at Novacare Complex on Aug 3, 2023, in Philadelphia.
Right guard: Tyler Steen vs. Kenyon Green vs. Drew Kendall
For the second year in a row, Steen went into the offseason as the favorite to win the starting right guard spot. And for the second year in a row, the Eagles brought in competition. Last year, it was Mekhi Becton, who had never played guard until trying it during mandatory minicamp, then winning the job in training camp.
This year, the Eagles acquired Green, the Texans' first-round pick in 2022, in the trade for Gardner-Johnson. Green had been a disappointment in Houston, but perhaps a chance to play in between center Cam Jurgens and right tackle Lane Johnson will change that.

In addition, fifth-round pick Drew Kendall, a center, could put himself in the mix with a strong camp. And there's also veteran Matt Pryor, who has played both guard and tackle during his career.

Linebacker: Smael Mondon vs. Jeremiah Trotter
It's very possible that Nakobe Dean (knee) and first-round pick Jihaad Campbell (shoulder) won't be available for OTAs, and that could last into training camp. That means two draft picks − fifth-round pick Smael Mondon and 2024 fifth-round pick Jeremiah Trotter Jr. − will get the first shot at playing next to Zack Baun.
Trotter got into a few games last season, mostly in mop-up situations. Veteran Oren Burks ended up replacing Dean when he tore his patellar tendon in the playoffs against Green Bay. Burks left in free agency. Mondon replaced Dean at Georgia after the Eagles drafted Dean in 2022.
Even if Dean and/or Campbell are ready for Week 1, Mondon and Trotter will at least have an opportunity in the spring to make an impression.
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Ainias Smith (82) returns a punt as Baltimore Ravens tight end Mike Rigerman (35) defends during the second half of a preseason game at M&T Bank Stadium on Aug 9, 2024, in Baltimore.
Wide receiver: Ainias Smith vs Johnny Wilson vs. Terrace Marshall
We know the top three wide receiver spots are going to A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and Jahan Dotson. The spots behind them, however, are up for grabs. Wilson, who's 6-foot-6, 231 pounds, presents a big target. But both he and Smith had their ups and downs as rookies. Marshall, meanwhile, was a second-round pick of the Carolina Panthers who never lived up to his billing.

At the very least, Marshall, who had 490 yards receiving in 2022, can push one or both of them for a roster spot. Don't overlook Danny Gray, a third-round pick of the 49ers in 2022, who spent last season on the Eagles' practice squad.

Bijan Robinson Makes Announcement on 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

Bijan Robinson Makes Announcement on 2028 Los Angeles Olympics originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For the first time in the historic sporting event's history, flag football will be a part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Advertisement In addition to flag football joining sports such as baseball/softball, cricket, lacrosse and squash as the new sports being added, the other exciting news around the flag football aspect is that NFL players were given the stamp of approval to play by the owners in a 32-0 vote back in May. While many fans have begun speculating who will or won't play, some notable stars have seemingly made decisions already. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champion, Patrick Mahomes, seemed to have passed on the opportunity. Meanwhile, four-time All-Pro receiver Justin Jefferson made it clear he hopes to rep the Stars and Stripes. On Monday, former Texas Longhorns star and current Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson revealed that he would be interested in playing. "I think it's awesome," Robinson told the media. "All it does is grow the game a lot. I think for me like, I grew up playing flag football and that was my offseason game was flag and 7-on-7. So, you know I feel like it's always an honor to play for your country, like you always wanna play for your country. And I would love to show my skill set on that type of stage." Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson staring at the Hartline-Imagn Images While Robinson admitted he would like to play, he did acknowledge that there are athletes out there who specialize in the sport. He also said that scheduling will play a major role in whether he and other NFL stars can play, along with the NFL teams actually allowing players to play in them. Advertisement Regardless, he doubled down on wanting to play. "I would love to play in that game if given the opportunity," Robinson said. "But obviously, we'll see. I don't want it to affect my team and what we got going on here." This past season, Robinson rushed for 1,456 yards and 14 touchdowns, while also adding 61 catches for 431 yards and a score. Assuming the 23-year-old is healthy when the Olympics roll around, it's hard to imagine there is a more shifty and elusive option than him. Adam Schefter says the Pittsburgh Steelers were in pursuit of two other quarterbacks before turning their attention solely to Aaron Rodgers. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers eventually ended their search for a starting quarterback by agreeing to terms with 20-year veteran Aaron Rodgers. Advertisement His signing, of course, did not transpire with much timeliness. It wouldn't have been a surprise if the Steelers were feeling turned off from Rodgers during his three-month-long wait before he made his signing official. But this, however, actually came after the team had already swung and missed twice. NFL insider Adam Schefter has revealed that Pittsburgh actually made an effort to sign two other quarterbacks before they were forced to pivot to Rodgers. The first would have eliminated this search entirely: Justin Fields. Fields was the Steelers' early-season starter in 2024 while Russell Wilson was rehabbing an injury. The young QB performed well, going 4-2 to build a strong argument why he should remain the starter even upon Wilson's return. Advertisement That didn't happen, and the Steelers were up and down the rest of the way, barely getting out of the regular season with a 10-7 record and Wild Card berth. This apparently upset Fields, who was searching for any opportunity to get out of Pittsburgh. He opted to sign with the New York Jets - Rodgers' last team - on a two-year $40 million contract. Then, the Steelers sought out a trade with the Los Angeles Rams to acquire Super Bowl winner Matthew Stafford. Stafford was granted the opportunity to seek a trade from the Rams during his contract dispute. Pittsburgh was shuffling through their package options, but couldn't put together a deal that satisfied LA. Advertisement Stafford's contract was then restructured to stay with the Rams for two more seasons. With Rodgers being Plan C, it can explain Pittsburgh's decision to reluctantly sign him for one year and roll the dice on a bounce-back season from the 41 year old. Some quarterback is better than no quarterback. A when "some" quarterback is still a future first-ballot Hall of Famer ... things could be worse, we suppose. But next season? The Steelers could dive into the Draft if they choose to give back Rodgers after a one-year rental. The 2026 NFL Draft - scheduled to be hosted in Pittsburgh - will feature a loaded class of signal callers, and the Steelers have a lot of picks to work with. Advertisement Rodgers eventually landed with the Steelers on a fairly team-friendly $13.65 million salary for this season, with the deal able to reach $19.5 mil after incentives. It's not a long-term answer, but it's something that keeps them afloat. If Rodgers was the team's third option, they might at least be happy that the search is now over. Steelers Already Letting Aaron Rodgers Reshape Offense

Steelers Already Letting Aaron Rodgers Reshape Offense originally appeared on Athlon Sports. And away we go ... The quarterback who promised he wasn't holding the Pittsburgh Steelers hostage is already making sure his new team customizes its offense to fit his dwindling skill set. Advertisement After ending a three-month waiting game by signing a one-year contract last week, Rodgers is expected to attend the Steelers' mandatory minicamp Tuesday. He's hovered over the organization all offseason, and now come reports that his influence is already tangible. Over the weekend, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported what we all knew was coming. According to Fowler, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and Rodgers have been in communication about changing the team's offense. That transformation includes finding a "sweet spot" where Rodgers can audible at the line of scrimmage but still stay true to the team's system. "Teams I've talked to believe that Rodgers at this stage is a middle-of-the-pack quarterback," Fowler said "He's probably ranked 15-17 among the top 32. He's not that top-10 guy anymore, but the Steelers do believe he has the best field vision from the pocket since they've had Ben Roethlisberger. They believe he's still got plenty of arm strength and the New York Jets coaches I've talked to think he was a lot better than the stats showed last year. It's just simply a mobility issue. It's also how he is going to coalesce with Smith?" Over and above helping harpoon the Jets' locker-room chemistry last season by skipping minicamp to vacation in Egypt, Rodgers was mediocre on the field. He threw a Pick 6 in a Week 5 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London that dropped their record to 2-3 and prompted the firing of both the head coach and general manager. Rodgers wound up throwing for almost 4,000 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, but he was more part of the problem rather than the solution during a dismal 5-12 season. Advertisement It will quite the "tweak" for the Steelers, transforming an offense built around mobile quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields to construct one around the 41-year-old pocket statue known as Rodgers. Last season he was sacked an eye-popping 40 times. He will have new weapon DK Metcalf to target, but Rodgers is years removed - and a surgery to repair a torn Achilles - from winning his last MVP. While Tomlin won his only Super Bowl with sturdy quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in the pocket, 2008 was a long a time ago all of the sudden. Smith, meanwhile, has coached mobile quarterbacks such as Marcus Mariota and Desmond Ridder. In the end, it appears Rodgers got what he wanted: To skip most of the Steelers' offseason program and to have a hefty say in what the offense looks like in 2025.
