Woman on scooty dies, rider injuredin collision
Navi Mumbai: A 19-year-old woman riding pillion on a scooter died while her male friend who was riding was injured in a collision between the two-wheeler and a truck on Sion-Panvel highway near Kamothe Thursday afternoon.
The woman, Kalamboli resident Ayesha Jagwan, and her friend Parth Jadhav (19) from Kamothe, lay bleeding. The man was discharged from hospital, said assistant inspector Priyanka Kharatmal.
Around 2.40 pm, the scooter was descending Kalamboli flyover when the collision took place. The two were taken to MGM Hospital, Kamothe, where the woman, who had sustained grievous head injury, was declared 'brought dead'. The truck driver, Sachin Kumar Singh (29), a Panvel resident, claimed he halted to help the two but abandoned the truck but fled as motorists gathered. He said he feared he would be beaten up. He surrendered to the police Friday morning.
Garment worker run over
A garment worker from Bihar died after a dumper truck hit the two-wheeler he was riding Thursday morning at Parel. The deceased Zishan Ansari (22) had come to Mumbai in search of employment. TNN

Roorkee: Eid celebrations turned into mourning for a family in Manglaur area near Roorkee after their 17-year-old son was brutally murdered by their 40-year-old neighbour on Saturday morning. The accused, a daily wager from Pathanpura locality, slit the boy's throat when the victim was returning home after offering prayers "to settle a personal score", police said on Saturday. Officials said that Riyasat Ahmed's son and the victim, Sahil Ahmed Malik, were friends and both studied in Class 9. Call for police action against cow vigilante groups during Eid in Bengaluru
A group of concerned advocates, researchers, and social activists have alleged rising cow vigilantism in Bengaluru during Eid celebrations, and called for immediate intervention by taking such vigilantes into preventive detention. In a statement issued on Saturday, advocate B.T. Venkatesh, along with activists Vinay Sreenivasa, Zia Nomani and Sylvia Karpagam, flagged instances of cow vigilantism over the last few days by Hindutva activist Puneeth Kerehalli, who is notorious for such raids. Over the last three days in the run up to Eid, Puneeth Kerehalli has conducted at least three 'raids' in which he trespassed into private properties and took away cattle in the garb of 'rescuing' them in Tannery Road, Ahmednagar, and Shivajinagar. He has broadcast these acts live on his Facebook page. He was detained by R.R. Nagar police over one such incident, but was later released, sources said. Notably, this is not the first time Puneeth Kerehalli has carried out such acts. He was arrested for murder in 2023 when a cattle transporter was killed during one such acts of vigilantism by him. The complaint, submitted to the Bengaluru City police, calls for the preventive detention of such individuals under relevant provisions of the CrPC or the Goonda Act. The group claims that these activities are being carried out under the guise of animal rights enforcement, but amount to criminal trespass and communal provocation. No response from city police The activists lamented the lack of any urgency or response from Bengaluru City police even after they flagged these incidents. 'Despite the urgency, physical copies of the complaint submitted to the offices of DCP West, DCP East, and DCP North were not acknowledged or accepted, citing Bakrid holiday and non-availability of officials for receiving tapal (official correspondence). This lack of acknowledgement during a time of high communal sensitivity is deeply concerning,' the statement read. The activists stated that the complaint has also been emailed to senior police and government officials, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, ADGP (Law & Order), and the Home Minister, among others. 'Even as the Bengaluru City police are yet to act, Mangaluru City police have registered a suo motu case against Puneeth Kerehalli for communally inflammatory language used on his Facebook live,' pointed out activist Zia Nomani. The FIR in the case, says Puneeth Kerehalli referred to some 'muslim areas' in Bengaluru as 'Pakistan'.

Himanta says drive to identify foreigners to be 'accelerated'; AAMSU protests 'harassment'
Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday asserted that the process of identifying illegal foreigners, which was "paused" due to NRC-related matters, will be accelerated, even as protests were witnessed in different parts of the state during Eid prayers on Saturday over "pushback" and "harassment" of minorities in the name of detecting illegal immigrants. Sarma maintained that the state government was looking into the details of an old law, which allows it to "push back" the declared infiltrators without having to mandatorily approach the judiciary. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme in Nalbari, Sarma said that a constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, while hearing a case on Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, had said that there is no legal requirement for the Assam government to always approach the judiciary in order to identify foreigners. "There exists an immigrants expel order, which is an old law. The Supreme Court has said that this law is in force and a deputy commissioner can give permission for immediate pushback under it," he maintained. "For whatever reason, our lawyers had not informed us and we too didn't know about it. The entire matter has come to light in the last few days. We will now discuss it further," he added. The chief minister said pushing back illegal migrants will continue, adding that the process of identifying foreigners, which had been paused due to NRC-related matters, will now be accelerated. "And when the identification of a foreigner happens, there will be no need to send the case to any tribunal. We will directly push them back. We have been preparing for it," he added. Sarma said the process of pushback will continue, though no person with a case pending before the court will be sent back. Meanwhile, members and supporters of the All Assam Minority Students' Union wore black badges and displayed placards against the purported recent pushback of Bangladeshis in the state. They carried out the protest in different parts, including Chirang and Jogighopa, after Eid namaz. AAMSU president Rejaul Karim Sarkar maintained that more intensified protests will be carried out if the government does not stop "harassment" of genuine citizens. "We have seen cases where the entire family is Indian but one member is taken away as an illegal foreigner. Such acts are against humanity. The government should stop harassment of genuine citizens, else we will carry out more agitations in a democratic manner," he said.
