Perplexity AI rolls out Perplexity Labs to write reports, spreadsheets and build apps
Perplexity AI has launched a new tool called Perplexity Labs to generate reports, spreadsheets, dashboards and more. The feature is available for Pro subscribers on the web, iOS and Android for now.
'Often performing 10 minutes or more of self-supervised work, Perplexity Labs use a suite of tools like deep web browsing, code execution, and chart and image creation to turn your ideas and to-do's into work that's been done,' a blog post announcing the news said.
The files that are created by the tool are organised in a separate 'Assets' tab to be viewed and downloaded. It can also help build and deploy interactive web apps directly under an 'App' tab.
Perplexity has said that the tool will soon be coming to their apps for Mac and Windows.
Earlier this year, the Aravind Srinivas-led company unveiled a deep research tool to compete with OpenAI and Google while also previewing a web browser called Comet.

Sweden steps up rules against Russia's Baltic 'shadow fleet'
Sweden on Saturday (May 31, 2025) announced new rules upping checks on foreign vessels in the Baltic from July 1, reinforcing a crackdown on Russia's "shadow fleet" of tankers deployed to circumvent sanctions on its oil trade. Since the Western-led sanctions imposed after its 2022 all-out invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has been relying on hundreds of such ships, that operate under murky ownership and dodgy insurance. European governments frequently blame the vessels for damaging — deliberately or not — undersea cables, and for posing a maritime environmental threat. The Swedish government said in a statement that the new rules "reinforce checks on foreign vessels by requiring insurance information". It said the effort "aims to fight against this fleet and, in so doing, improve maritime safety and environmental protection". The Swedish coast guard and maritime authorities will be tasked with scrutinising insurance details not only of ships docking in Swedish ports, "but also those crossing Swedish territorial waters, or its exclusive economic zone", which extends some 200 nautical miles from shore. Sweden and Finland — both of whom recently joined NATO — are alert to Baltic Sea incidents impacting energy and communication infrastructure, after several instances of damage in late 2024. "We are seeing a growing number of concerning incidents in the Baltic Sea, which requires... us to prepare for the worst," Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in Saturday's statement. He added that information gleaned under the new rules checking vessels would be shared with allies and could be added to databases used for sanctions enforcement. The European Union last week adopted a 17th sanctions package against Russia that targets nearly 200 vessels in the "shadow fleet".

Google lets Android phones run AI models without internet
Different artificial intelligence (AI) models, which can create images, answer questions, or code, can now be run locally on Android smartphones. Last week, Google launched a new app that enables users to run various AI models from the Hugging Face platform directly on their phones, without an internet connection. The app, named Google AI Edge Gallery , is currently available for Android, and an iOS version is expected soon. It searches, downloads, and runs AI models on the phone, using its built-in processor. AI models that run online in the cloud are usually more powerful, but there could be certain drawbacks. For example, users may be uncomfortable sharing personal or sensitive data with remote servers, or they might want to use AI features when they don't have Wi-Fi or cellular data. Google is calling this an 'experimental Alpha release'. The app can be downloaded from GitHub . Google AI Edge Gallery's home screen shows shortcuts to different AI tools like 'Ask Image' and 'AI Chat.' When you tap on one, you'll see a list of models that work for that task, including Google's own Gemma 3n model . Live Events The app also includes a feature called 'Prompt Lab,' where users can try out single-task prompts — like summarising or rewriting text. It includes task templates and settings that let users customise how the models behave. Discover the stories of your interest Blockchain 5 Stories Cyber-safety 7 Stories Fintech 9 Stories E-comm 9 Stories ML 8 Stories Edtech 6 Stories The caveats related to AI operations remain. Google notes that how well the app works depends on the phone. Newer, more powerful phones will run the models faster. Also, larger models take longer to finish tasks, like answering questions about images, compared to smaller models. Google has invited feedback on the app from developers. It has been released under the Apache 2.0 license , which means it is available for public use , and even for commercial purposes.

DeepSeek can undercut larger ChatGPT, ace investor Mary Meeker warns
Mary Meeker predicts AI will spawn numerous trillion-dollar companies, with competition intensifying from firms like China's DeepSeek. Rising training costs for leading US models, such as OpenAI's GPT, are creating opportunities for cheaper, task-specific alternatives. The current AI landscape resembles a capital-intensive commodity market, demanding deep funding and patient investors for startups to thrive. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Artificial intelligence (AI) forerunners like OpenAI could soon face serious competition from cheaper rivals such as China's DeepSeek , according to renowned Silicon Valley analyst and investor Mary Meeker Meeker, an early investor in companies like Meta, Spotify, and Airbnb, told the Financial Times that AI will create 'multiple companies worth $10 trillion' — and not all of them will be based in North America. 'The wealth creation will be extraordinary. We've never had a five-billion-user market that was this easy to reach,' she a recent report, Meeker and others point out that US companies, such as OpenAI's GPT and Google's Gemini, leading the development of large language models (LLMs) are now facing rising training costs. At the same time, competition from players like DeepSeek has intensified.'The business model is in flux,' Meeker wrote. 'Smaller, cheaper models tailored for specific tasks are emerging, challenging the idea that one large, general-purpose LLM can do it all.'While AI companies have enjoyed rise in revenues and stock prices, they face growing threats. New, more powerful chips and improved algorithms are lowering the cost of running AI models. This is helping competitors like DeepSeek launch models that are more affordable and goes on to underscore that, in the short term, these AI businesses are starting to look like commodity operations that burn through venture capital at a rapid pace. Despite the advances in the space, training the most advanced AI models is still extremely expensive. Costs have increased 2,400 times in the past eight years, making it nearly impossible for smaller players to compete. Only a few companies can afford to keep up, and even those lack a clear path to lower prices and more model options benefit consumers, they create a tough environment for startups. To survive, these companies need deep funding and patient investors. Meeker compares their situation to companies like Uber, Amazon, and Tesla , which all spent heavily for years before turning a reported earlier this week how several Indian startups may have to tap external funding to scale up their GenAI-based applications as AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic pause steep price cuts of their generative AI rose to fame during her time at Morgan Stanley with bets like Google and Apple, earning the moniker "queen of the internet".
