Nair and O'Neill win Dubai Creek Race to Korea qualifier, edge closer to WAGC dream
Druv Nair (7) and Sam O'Neill (12) showcased their golfing prowess to claim top honours in Division 1 and Division 2, respectively, at the fourth qualifying round of the 2025 Race to Korea, presented by Dugasta - taking a step toward the UAE Grand Final.
With 43 players teeing off in one of 17 qualifying rounds across the UAE at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, the stakes were high. Both Nair and O'Neill demonstrated resilience and precision under pressure, earning their place among the top five divisional winners who now advance to the UAE Grand Final at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa on May 17.
A strong performance there could see them take the ultimate step—securing a coveted spot at the World Final of the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) in Jeju Island, South Korea, later this year.
For Nair and O'Neill, this win isn't just about topping a leaderboard—it's a statement of intent as they edge closer to their goal of representing the UAE on the global stage.
Nair's round was highlighted by gross birdies on holes 6, 10, and 13, carding solid nines of 39 and 37. His commanding performance saw him finish a staggering five shots clear of his nearest competitor in Division 1.
O'Neill, meanwhile, set the pace early, with a dazzling front nine of 37 gross. He remained steady on the back nine, navigating the closing stretch with composure—even playing holes 17 and 18 in sixes—to clinch victory in Division 2 by three strokes.

Returning India batter strengthens case for England Tests
Having made his Test debut for India back in 2016, Nair made instant impression with a triple century in only his third Test against England. However, the middle-order batter wasn't able to cement his place in the red-ball lineup after six appearances in the format. Nair arrives in England on the back of noteworthy displays in India's domestic cricket season and the Indian Premier League. He also boasts vital county experience in English conditions, having played for Northamptonshire in 2023 and 2024, amassing 736 runs in 10 matches at an average of 52.57, which also included a splendid double hundred. Accompanying him in the middle towards the end of the day's play in Canterbury was Dhruv Jurel. The wicketkeeper-batter offered India another positive with a delightfully compiled 82* off 104 deliveries. The 24-year-old, who has been part of India's red-ball setup over the past year, was also named among the 18-member squad for the England Tests.

UAE stars tee up for glory in Korea after thrilling Dugasta final showdown
The journey that began months ago across the UAE's premier golf courses throughout the Emirates, reached its thrilling conclusion last weekend as the Dugasta Race to Korea National Final unfolded at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa. The stakes were high, the competition fierce, and the prize — a chance to represent the UAE at the prestigious World Amateur Golfers Championship in Jeju Island, South Korea in October-November this year. After 18 fiercely contested qualifying rounds over 1,000 hopefuls were whittled down to an elite field for the grand finale. The National Final brought together the very best amateur golfers in the country, divided into five handicap categories — each player hoping to seal their place on the international stage. In Division 1 (0–5.4 handicap), Dhruv Nair of Dubai Creek Golf Club delivered a composed round of net 71, finishing atop the leaderboard. Neil Maidment from Sharjah produced the day's best score — a superb net 66 — to win Division 2 (5.5–10.4 handicap). Irfan Izhar matched Nair's total with a net 71 to secure Division 3 (10.5–15.4 handicap), while Neil Mitchell of The Els Club matched the same score to triumph in Division 4 (15.5–20.4 handicap). Rounding off the winners, Ivan Kraemer from Emirates Golf Club posted a steady net 75 to take top honours in Division 5 (20.5–25.4 handicap). These five golfers — each a reflection of skill and determination — have now earned the honour of representing the UAE at the World Amateur Golfers Championship in Jeju Island where they will compete against players from over 40 countries. Organised by Sport2Business Events, the Dugasta Race to Korea series has not only showcased the rising standard of golf in the UAE but also brought the community together in a spirit of camaraderie and competition. The season long tournament is sanctioned by the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF). Russell Yeomans, promoter of the 2025 Race to Korea, commented, "This event at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa, is the culmination of our 2025 season. Congratulations to the five Divisional champions for their scores. "It has been a long season for all, but we feel the participation levels have been so much higher this season, especially at the end of the calendar. Thanks to all the golf clubs, and the Emirates Golf Federation for everyone's support. "We are especially happy with the scoring levels. Looking at the overall final results it seems that we gave everyone the chance to participate and qualify – that is the difficult part of organizing a countrywide event involving so many players of varying handicap levels' 'We are proud of the UAE team we have assembled," Yeomans added. "Attention now focuses to Jeju Island, for the World Final. We are all looking forward to what will be a very special week." 'As part of the Sport2Business portfolio, we have attended previous World Finals at various venues.' Around 47 countries will be competing this year – it really is a Bucket-List event,' concluded Yeomans. From Abu Dhabi to Ajman, the series inspired newcomers and seasoned players alike — proving that golf's grassroots in the UAE are alive, thriving, and gaining global momentum. As the UAE's five champions prepare for their South Korean adventure on an all-expenses paid 7-day golfing extravaganza, the spotlight now shifts to Jeju Island, where dreams of global glory await — and the next chapter in their golfing journeys begins. Road to Jeju Island: UAE golfers chase the dream in thrilling Race to Korea finale
With the season's end looming and pressure mounting, the Race to Korea is entering its most electric chapter yet — a dramatic final sprint where dreams will be made or dashed on the fairways of the UAE. From Dubai's glistening desert courses to Abu Dhabi's coastal greens, this year's edition of the Race to Korea, presented by DUGASTA, has already rewritten the script. Participation numbers have soared to record-breaking heights, with 17 qualifiers across the Emirates bringing together the nation's most passionate amateur golfers, all chasing the same goal: a coveted spot at the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) World Final in South Korea's breathtaking Jeju Island. Now, with only three qualifiers remaining, the tension is palpable. Three Events, One Last Shot For those yet to punch their ticket to the UAE National Final, the window is closing fast. But the opportunity still exists — if they can keep their nerve. Three events remain: Yas Links Abu Dhabi – Saturday, 3rd May Abu Dhabi City Golf Club – Sunday, 4th May Arabian Ranches Golf Club, Dubai – Saturday, 10th May These final qualifiers promise high-stakes drama, with pressure mounting on every tee box and putt. The top five finishers in each division at these events will join the elite field at the UAE National Final, set for Saturday, 17th May at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa — the final battleground before the journey shifts to international soil. Jeju Island Beckons For five standout champions, victory in Abu Dhabi will mean more than a trophy — it will mean donning the UAE colours and boarding a flight to one of golf's most awe-inspiring destinations. Jeju Island, a volcanic gem off South Korea's southern coast, will host players from 47 countries at the WAGC World Final this October. It's a chance to compete globally, all expenses paid, and to experience the camaraderie, culture, and competition that make the WAGC unlike anything else in amateur golf. The Spirit of the Game Russell Yeomans of Sport2Business, the driving force behind the Race to Korea, is buzzing with pride. 'This season has been extraordinary. We've seen more players than ever before, and the standard of play has been phenomenal. It's a testament to the strength of UAE's amateur golf community," he said. He also had a message for those still sitting on the sidelines: 'There's still time to join. If you're over 18 and have a handicap of 25 or lower, this is your moment. The prizes are spectacular, but the memories — especially for our five national champions — will last a lifetime.' With the fairways narrowing and the finish line in sight, the Race to Korea is no longer just a tournament. It's a test of nerve, a showcase of emerging talent, and a celebration of what's possible when passion meets opportunity.
