Cardiff council plans to hike council tax and increase the cost of parking permits
Cardiff council plans to increase council tax, increase the cost of residential parking permits, and get rid of dozens of roles. Following the Welsh Government's budget decision on Thursday, February 20, Cardiff council revealed its final set of proposals to help it save £27.7m in 2025-26.
The areas of highest spending being proposed by the council for the next financial year include schools, children's services, and social care. As well as the cost of parking permits residents in the city will see the cost of school meals and burial and cremation services go up.
Council tax is proposed to go up by 4.95% and 60 posts at the local authority are expected to be lost. This will be through non-replacement of vacancies and voluntary redundancy. For more Cardiff stories sign up to our newsletter here.

A number of changes were made to the council's initial budget proposals following a public consultation. Some of the council's main proposals include:
⦁ An increase in residential parking charges for second and visitor permits from £80 to £90⦁ A 9.6% increase in the cost of the burial service from £1,040 to £1,140⦁ A 4.6% increase in the cost of the cremation service from £870 to £910⦁ A 15p increase in the cost of secondary school meals from £3.40 to £3.55
Council plans to look at surcharges for burials and cremations at weekends and bank holidays have been dropped. The local authority said school meals will continue to be subsidised by them.
Schools in Cardiff will receive an additional £22.9m, adult services an additional £12.8m, and children's services an additional £6.5m. Central education services, which includes home to school transport, will receive an additional £8.8m. Other areas which will receive spending include:
⦁ £1.5m for neighbourhood regeneration, including parks⦁ £1m for schemes to improve street cleanliness and recycling⦁ £600,000 to help support community events⦁ £600,000 for child-friendly initiatives like Cardiff Commitment⦁ £250,000 for additional drain clearances⦁ £200,000 for sports facilities grants⦁ £200,000 for community safety initiatives⦁ £150,000 for bus shelters
Cardiff Council's cabinet member for finance, modernisation and performance, Cllr Chris Weaver, said: "Demand for council services is increasing due to several factors. The cost-of-living crisis has led to more people presenting as homeless in the city, from families who can no longer afford rents or mortgages to single individuals facing similar challenges.
"Additionally, Cardiff's ageing population means more people require our support each year, including those needing dementia services. We are also seeing a rise in the number of children with additional learning needs who need specialist support.
"These are vitally important services, and we have to do our best to ensure people get the help they need and deserve." Cardiff Council was initially looking at a budget gap of more than £60m.
However, after an uplift in funding from the Welsh Government, this has been reduced to £27.7m. With council tax accounting for about 26% of the council's budget, Cllr Weaver said the increased levy being proposed won't be enough to bridge the gap.
The largest area of proposed savings will come under "efficiency and income savings", which will account for £12.5m. Corporate savings and service change proposals will account for £5.8m.
Cllr Weaver said: "Regrettably, around 60 positions will be lost across the council, following the loss of 160 roles last year. We are committed to finding efficiencies and changing how we work to minimise the impact on our frontline services. We want our residents to know that we have listened to their feedback.
"Our proposals aim to safeguard the services that matter most to them - education, support for the vulnerable, and social care." Cardiff Council's budget proposals will be discussed by cabinet members at a meeting on Thursday, February 27. If agreed by cabinet, the proposals will go to full council on Thursday, March 6 for final approval.

Amazon Deals of the Day: Lightning Deal Slashes 50% Off Anker's Portable Charger
Amazon sells a vast panoply of products, with new ones arriving daily. The retail giant carries everything from home essentials to tech gear and wellness items. As much as it loves adding new products, Amazon also loves cutting prices. Deciding which deals are worth grabbing (and which aren't) is a full-time job -- our job, specifically. That's why we scope out the top deals for you. Today, we spotted one of our favorite power banks down to half the regular price, but hurry supplies are going quick. We also found a two-pack of indoor Ring cameras for $60, down from $100. And finally, if you're looking for a solid pair of affordable headphones, Sony's budget pair just got a nice $22 price cut. Most of us are constantly on the go, which means we're bringing our devices with us. Keeping our devices like our phones charged can be a hassle, especially if you're hunting around for a place to plug your charger in. A portable charger can help you keep your phone powered up no matter where you are. The Anker Zolo portable power bank is our favorite portable charger for iPhones. We love it because it's pretty compact for an 10,000-mAh battery. It also has a pretty strong 30W charging power. It also has a LED screen with a battery life indicator. The USB-C cable tucks into a port on the battery, turning the cable into a lanyard when you don't have it plugged into a device. Normally $26, the black and pink color options are now down to $13. But hurry, this lighting deal is going fast. Protecting our homes is important to all of us, with many of us adding video doorbells and other types of security cams to the outside of our houses -- but what about the inside? Indoor security cameras can help you keep an eye on important areas, such as entryways, as well as your family and pets, no matter where you are. Many even opt to use these cams as a baby monitor. The Ring Stick Up Pro camera is our favorite portable indoor security camera of 2025. This camera can capture everything with 1080p HD video with features like Live View and Color Night Vision so you won't miss a thing. You can also get notifications to your phone when the camera detects movement, in real time. It works with Alexa so you can have a hands-free experience, too. You can score a two pack for $60 right now, bringing each camera to just $30. Since one camera normally retails for $60, you're getting these for basically half-off. Just like all nice things, much of the highest-quality audio gear is far from the cheapest. But we spotted a deal that can help bring down the cost of wireless headphones for bargain hunters. The Sony WH-CH520 wireless headphones are back to down to their all-time low price of $38. These headphones are our favorite on-ear budget headphones of 2025. They are lightweight and relatively comfortable considering they are on-ear headphones, and they're a good option for someone looking for something simple, as these headphones lack noise canceling and aren't packed with the high end features you'll find on other pairs. However, they have an exceptional battery life of up to 50 hours. They also have multipoint Bluetooth pairing, so you can pair them with two devices at the same time. Just about every color is on sale right now, so grab yours while you can. With so many deals on Amazon, deciding which ones are worth your money can be difficult. But CNET combs through what the world's largest online retailer has to offer and gathers the best deals for you.

Tech giants' indirect emissions rose 150% in three years as AI expands, UN agency says
By Olivia Le Poidevin GENEVA (Reuters) -Indirect carbon emissions from the operations of four of the leading AI-focused tech companies, Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta, rose on average by 150% from 2020-2023, as they had to use more power for energy-demanding data centres, a United Nations report said on Thursday. The use of artificial intelligence is driving up global indirect emissions because of the vast amounts of energy required to power data centres, the report by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the U.N. agency for digital technologies, said. Indirect emissions include those generated by purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling consumed by a company. Amazon's operational carbon emissions grew the most at 182% in 2023 compared to three years before, followed by Microsoft at 155%, Meta at 145% and Alphabet at 138%, according to the report. The ITU tracked the greenhouse gas emissions of 200 leading digital companies between 2020 and 2023. Meta, which owns Facebook and WhatsApp, pointed Reuters to its sustainability report that said it is working to reduce emissions, energy and water used to power its data centres. The other companies did not respond immediately to requests for comment. As investment in AI increases, carbon emissions from the top-emitting AI systems are predicted to reach up to 102.6 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2) per year, the report stated. The data centres that are needed for AI development could also put pressure on existing energy infrastructure. "The rapid growth of artificial intelligence is driving a sharp rise in global electricity demand, with electricity use by data centres increasing four times faster than the overall rise in electricity consumption," the report found. It also highlighted that although a growing number of digital companies had set emissions targets, those ambitions had not yet fully translated into actual reductions of emissions.

In fact, there's one you can get right now if you want to go ahead and treat yourself, or stop worrying about how many outlets you need on a regular basis. Head over to Amazon to get the Anker Nano 100W USB-C Charger for just $36, down from its usual price of $55. That's $19 off and a discount of 35%. See at Amazon Your new favorite multitasking charger Anker is one of the most trusted names in charging tech, and this GaN (gallium nitride) charger is one of their best-reviewed for good reason. It's small (smaller than most laptop bricks) but can still pump out 100W of total power across two USB-C ports and one USB-A. That means you can charge a MacBook Pro, an iPad, and your phone all at once without seeing any slowdown. That's all made possible by Anker's power distribution tech. It can adjust output based on how many devices you plug in and what they need, so you're not losing efficiency even when you're multitasking. And unlike so many of those generic multi-port chargers that get suspiciously warm after 10 minutes, this one has a ton of safety features like temperature control and short-circuit protection. Anker also throws in a 5-foot USB-C to USB-C cable in the box, so you're not scrambling for extras right out of the gate. Whether you're someone who travels for work, a college student dealing with limited dorm outlets, or just someone tired of the 'one charger per device' lifestyle, this is the kind of purchase that can instantly simplify your setup. For just $36, you can't argue that you aren't getting some excellent value here. You get a charger with multiple ports that can get your phone back to 100% in a short amount of time from a familiar brand, and it's small enough to toss in a bag and take anywhere. It's also safe enough to leave alone even with all of its ports full, too. So if you're on the fence about it, go ahead and get one. You'll be glad that you did. See at Amazon
