Loke warns bus driver in fatal UPSI crash: Don't make unverified claims about brake failure
GERIK, June 12 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke has cautioned the bus driver involved in the fatal crash that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students here against making unverified claims about the vehicle's condition.
The Star Online reported Loke as saying, the driver's statement that the bus's brakes had failed was yet to be confirmed through technical inspection by Puspakom.
'I'm not sure if the driver made the claim to protect himself, but it cannot be taken at face value,' Loke reportedly told reporters after visiting the crash site and inspecting the vehicle at the Gerik district police headquarters today.
'I want to remind the driver not to say things that may not be true. These matters can be verified through mechanical tests,' he said.
He added that Puspakom had completed a brake system inspection and the results are expected within the next two days.

The early morning crash, which occurred on Wednesday, claimed the lives of 15 UPSI students after the bus lost control and overturned.
Loke also used the incident to remind all public transport operators to conduct their own internal inspections and safety audits, known as JISA, before the Road Transport Department (JPJ) steps in.
'JISA is not new. Operators are aware of it, but compliance remains weak,' he said.
Loke said the ministry would strengthen enforcement of JISA and carry out large-scale inspections across all public transport operators, including bus and lorry services.

FRU Fatal Crash: Lorry Company Owner To Face Court Action
SHAH ALAM, June 13 (Bernama) -- The owner of the lorry company linked to the fatal crash involving a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) vehicle on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam in Teluk Intan last month, will be taken to court. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will take action against the company. 'Firstly, the operator's licence has been revoked. Secondly, legal action will be taken against the company owner in court through JPJ,' he told reporters at a press conference after officiating the Speed Limitation Device (SLD) for commercial vehicles' implementation, at Scania (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. Loke added that the families of the victims could also pursue civil action against the company, to seek damages and compensation. The tragic accident occurred at 8.54 am on May 13, when a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) lorry collided with a tipper lorry, which had allegedly veered into the opposite lane. The crash claimed the lives of nine FRU members, and left nine others injured. In another development, Loke said the decision to return the authority to regulate tourism transport, particularly involving tour buses, to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) is subject to Cabinet approval and he has no objection to the move, noting that the matter has been raised over the past two years. 'MOTAC had previously prepared a Cabinet Memorandum (MJM) and submitted it to the Ministry of Transport (MOT) even before the recent incident involving Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students,' Loke said. 'I want to stress that this issue is not a response to the tragedy. I've told the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing that I have no objection to returning the regulatory authority, provided that the safety of sightseeing buses can be guaranteed. I'm more than happy to hand it back, but ultimately, the decision lies with the Cabinet,' he added. (Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA : The tourism, arts and culture ministry has issued inspection notices and show-cause letters to several business entities involved in the accident on the East-West Highway near Gerik, Perak, which killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. The ministry said the action was taken under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 after receiving a report on the tragedy. 'The ministry will work with the police, the Land Public Transport Agency and the road transport department to complete the investigation in accordance with the provisions of the law so that appropriate punishment is imposed, and the victims' families receive the appropriate protection,' it said in a statement today. It said further action will be taken once the investigation is concluded. The ministry's officials have also visited the families of the victims and those of the injured, it said, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring tourism-related activities are conducted safely, ethically, and responsibly. In the incident on June 9, a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu, to the main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after being involved in a collision with a car. Thirty-three people, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the car were injured.
