Cuvet and Galvin hit HRs to help Miami beat Alabama 5-3 at Hattiesburg Regional
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Daniel Cuvet hit a three-run home run in the first inning, Max Galvin added a solo shot in the fifth and No. 3 seed Miami beat Alabama 5-3 in the opening game of the Hattiesburg Regional on Friday.
Miami (32-24) plays either top-seeded Southern Miss or Columbia on Saturday. No. 2 seed Alabama (41-17) takes on the other in a loser-out game.
Jake Ogden walked to lead off the game and Galvin followed with a single before Cuvet hit a 3-0 pitch over the wall in right field and the Hurricanes led the rest of the way.
Cuvet led off the third with a double and scored on a two-out single by Renzo Gonzalez to make it 4-0.
Kade Snell was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth and scored for Alabama when Brady Neal grounded out with the bases loaded. Brennen Norton followed with a two-RBI double to cut the Crimson Tide's deficit to 4-3.
AJ Ciscar (6-1) gave up three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings. Brian Walters pitched a scoreless ninth and earned his ninth save of the season.
Bryce Fowler fouled off seven straight pitches before he reached on an error with two out in the ninth and moved to second when Justin Lebron was hit by a pitch but Walters got Snell to fly out to end the game.
Riley Quick (8-3) pitched six innings and allowed five runs on eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

ATLANTA (AP) — Eugenio Suárez hit a go-ahead, two-run double off Raisel Iglesias to cap a seven-run ninth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks stunned the Atlanta Braves 11-10 on Thursday to sweep a three-game series. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a one-out homer in the ninth and Alek Thomas followed with a two-run shot, both off Scott Blewett, to get the Diamondbacks within 10-7. After Blewett walked the next batter, the Braves brought in closer Iglesias (3-5), who allowed hits to four of the next five to blow a save for the fourth time this season. Ketel Marte homered for Arizona in the eighth and had an RBI infield single in the ninth that made it 10-8. After Iglesias got a popup for the second out, Ildemaro Vargas hit an RBI single and Suárez completed the rally with his line drive to left. LOUIS (AP) — Maikel Garcia homered, doubled and scored three times, and Kansas City beat St. Louis in the second game of a day-night doubleheader. Royals starter Cole Ragans pitched three innings in his return from the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain. He allowed five runs on five hits, struck out four and walked three. Angel Zerpa (3-0) pitched three scoreless innings in relief, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out four. Carlos Estévez earned his 18th save in 21 tries. Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore (3-5) was pulled after four-plus innings with fatigue-related issues. He allowed a season-high seven runs on eight hits. The Cardinals rallied to take game one of the doubleheader 6-5 on Willson Contreras' RBI single in the tenth. Garcia's two-run homer in the first gave the Royals a 2-0 lead in the nightcap. Freddy Fermin hit a curveball 406 feet into the third deck in left field to lead off the third, sparking a three-run rally. Reliever Steven Wilson (2-1, 1.89 ERA) worked a scoreless 10th inning for the win, stranding two baserunners. Casey Mize worked 4 2/3 innings for the Tigers, allowing two earned runs, six hits and four walks. BLUE JAYS 9, PHILLIES 1 TORONTO (AP) — Bo Bichette hit a two-run homer, Myles Straw and Tyler Heineman each had two hits and three RBIs, and Toronto beat Philadelphia, handing the slumping Phillies their sixth loss in seven games. Alejandro Kirk had three hits, scored once and drove in a run as the Blue Jays took two of three from Philadelphia. Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt (6-3) allowed one run and five hits in a season-high seven innings to win for the third time in four starts. Nick Castellanos had three hits and Kyle Schwarber had an RBI single for Philadelphia, which finished 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position. The Phillies scored six runs in the opening inning of the three-game series but scored just four the rest of the way. They came in having won their previous five road series. After allowing a career-worst 12 earned runs against Milwaukee in his previous start, left-hander Jesús Luzardo (5-2) struggled again Thursday, giving up eight runs and nine hits in a season-low 2 1/3 innings. Ray (8-1) allowed two runs and four hits with a walk. The 33-year-old left-hander retired the side in order four times and didn't allow a runner past first base in his final four innings. DODGERS 6, METS 5 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Conforto drove in the tiebreaking run in the Dodgers' three-run eighth inning, and Los Angeles rallied for a victory over New York to split the NL powers' four-game series. Conforto has struggled mightily in his first season with the Dodgers, but he drove a two-out single to left off Reed Garrett (1-2) for the Dodgers' third unearned run of the eighth. Will Smith delivered an RBI double moments earlier, and he scored the tying run when the Mets comically misplayed Andy Pages' grounder to Brett Baty at third. CUBS 7, NATIONALS 1 WASHINGTON (AP) — Ian Happ homered and drove in four runs on three hits, Pete Crow-Armstrong added his team-leading 16th home run and Chicago beat Washington to earn their seventh consecutive series victory. Colin Rea (4-2) allowed five hits over 5 1/3 scoreless innings after opener Drew Pomeranz completed a clean first as the Cubs won the rubber game and their 16th of their last 21 games overall. Washington's Jake Irvin (5-2) allowed three runs over five innings, including Crow-Armstrong's two-run shot in the first and Happ's run-scoring double — good for his 500th career RBI — in the second. Luis García Jr. singled in the Nats' run in the ninth. Happ connected for his two-run, 405-foot drive off the facade of the third deck in right field against Jackson Rutledge in the sixth. YANKEES 4, GUARDIANS 0 NEW YORK (AP) —Max Fried allowed only an infield single to José Ramírez three batters into the game in six innings to bounce back from his first loss, and New York beat Cleveland. Cody Bellinger hit a two-run homer and added an RBI single as the Yankees headed into their first meeting against the rival Red Sox with their 16th win in 22 games. RAYS 4, RANGERS 3 TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Taylor Walls hit a two-run single to second baseman Marcus Semien in the ninth inning and Tampa Bay rallied to beat Texas. Junior Caminero, who homered off Jack Leiter in the second inning, had an RBI single against Robert Garcia (1-3) to pull the Rays to 3-2 earlier in the ninth. After Jake Mangum flied out for the second out, Christopher Morel singled to load the bases. Walls then hit a grounder to Semien, but no one was covering first base and Caminero came around to score from second for the winning run. It marked the second straight night the Rays won on a defensive miscue. On Wednesday night, Tampa Bay took advantage of Rangers pitcher Kumar Rocker forgetting to cover first base to score a run and then scored another when Rocker then held the ball as Jonathan Aranda scored from second. At least 30 people, including more than half the team, was hit by a gastrointestinal issue on their way back from Mexico, which has prevented the Vancouver Whitecaps from training in full for the past two days. 'You know, in hindsight, everyone felt ill during the game,' Caps CEO Axel Schuster joked Thursday. 'Maybe it's better to have all negatives in one week this year. I will take that. If you have everything negative and all frustration packed in one week, then it's OK.' It was the Monday after the travelling party returned when the symptoms ravaged the group. They had an off day Tuesday, but training was cancelled Wednesday and Thursday as the team tried to regain its health. The Whitecaps are scheduled to host the Seattle Sounders on Sunday evening (6 p.m. PT), and were already set to have nine players miss the game because of national team call-ups. There is a health and safety protocol in place that the league could trigger should player safety be deemed at risk, but that decision hasn't been made yet. 'We are now more or less working through, from day to day, how the situation evolves and changes, and what that means for training tomorrow,' said Schuster. 'I don't have an answer yet, but that we expect that things hopefully become better from day to day. '… We also work with the health authorities in British Columbia, together with the infection disease experts, because we wanted to make it very clear right from the beginning to the league that we're not making anything up, that this is a real, real, real problem that we are dealing with.' Asked if there was any suggestion of foul play, a club spokesperson said there wasn't. Whether it was a case of the team being served a bad meal or whether it was an illness contracted through other means is being investigated. As part of their preparation for Sunday's final, the team secured their own chef in hopes of avoiding any food-related issues.
