Sabalenka powers into Roland Garros quarter-finals
World number one Aryna Sabalenka reached her 10th consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final on Sunday with a straight-sets win over Amanda Anisimova in the French Open fourth round.
The Belarusian battled through a tight opening set against the American 16th seed and then needed eight match points to clinch a 7-5, 6-3 victory on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Sabalenka, who was the pre-tournament favourite, will face Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the last eight after the Chinese star edged past Liudmila Samsonova.
Zheng beat Sabalenka for the first time in their seven meetings in the Italian Open quarter-finals in the build-up to Roland Garros.
Anisimova holds a 5-3 winning record over Sabalenka but has now lost their last two matches.
The 23-year-old, a French Open semi-finalist in 2019, won her maiden WTA 1000 title in Doha earlier this season.
She pushed Sabalenka in the first set, breaking the top seed when she was serving to clinch the opener.
But two missed break points in the 11th game proved costly as Sabalenka went on to secure a one-set lead.
The three-time Grand Slam champion quickly built a 3-0 advantage in the second set.
Anisimova showed real grit to save six match points in a marathon hold of serve to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Sabalenka finally finished it off on her own serve at the eighth time of asking with a thumping backhand winner.

Last week, sports broadcaster ESPN reported that the IOC had confirmed that Russian teams will remain barred from the 2026 Winter Games. 'For the Olympics – it's an IOC decision,' Tardif replied when asked by a TASS correspondent whether the committee's ruling regarding Russia's hockey team was final. In February, the IIHF ruled to extend its sanctions and ban both Russian and Belarusian teams from participating in the federation's 2025-2026 championship season. The IIHF, like many other international sports organizations, banned athletes from both nations at the IOC's behest following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. The committee later allowed certain Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under a neutral flag, provided they pass a vetting process to determine that they have not supported the Ukraine conflict. 'The IOC Executive Board recommendation from March 2023 with regard to teams of athletes with a Russian passport remains in place,' ESPN wrote last week, citing the IOC. 'It is based on the fact that, by definition, a group of Individual Neutral Athletes cannot be considered a team.' Former finalist Kyrgios out of Wimbledon with injury
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios said Tuesday that he will miss this year's tournament and the grass-court season after "a small setback" on his latest injury return. The 30-year-old Australian has played very little tennis over the last two years because of various injuries, notably a wrist problem that required surgery. In March at the Miami Open he won his first singles match since 2022 but he pulled out of the ongoing French Open, where he had been down to play men's doubles, with a knee injury.
