Vardy signs off in style with 200th Leicester goal

Yahoo18-05-2025

Jamie Vardy said Leicester would always remain "in my heart" after he brought down the curtain on his Foxes career with his 200th goal for the club in Sunday's 2-0 victory against Ipswich.
Vardy was making his 500th and final appearance for Leicester after a remarkable spell including a stunning Premier League title triumph in 2016 -- the Foxes were rank 5,000/1 outsiders before that campaign started -- and FA Cup glory in 2021.

The fact the 38-year-old began his career in non-league football, having been released by hometown club Sheffield Wednesday before going on to win 26 England caps, just added to his cult appeal with Leicester fans.
Sunday's match also came exactly 13 years to the day since Vardy joined Leicester from Fleetwood for a non-league record fee of £1 million (£1.3 million).
"I've enjoyed every minute of this," Vardy, speaking on the pitch after full-time told the Leicester faithful. "I look forward to keeping an eye on the club I love. They are in my heart.
"From the bottom of my heart, thank you for taking myself and my family in as your own. I hope I've repaid you."

With Leicester demoted from the Premier League long before Sunday's match against fellow relegated side Ipswich, Vardy had already announced he was leaving the Midlands club at the end of the season.
It was then agreed Vardy, the club's record goalscorer, would not play in next weekend's final game of the campaign, away to Bournemouth, to ensure his last Leicester appearance came at the King Power Stadium.
And he gave fans one more moment to savour when he opened the scoring in the 28th minute before being given a guard of honour by his team-mates when substituted with 10 minutes to go as he walked off the pitch as a Leicester player for the last time.
He had led Leicester out onto the pitch before kick-off, with fans waving flags in the stands with "Thank you Vards" printed on, while two banners were hung up behind each goal end as the scoreboard read "Goodbye GOAT (Greatest of All Time)".

The 2019/20 Premier League Golden Boot winner had already missed the target with two chances but it was third time lucky just before the half-hour when he finished expertly for his ninth league goal of the season following a through ball from James Justin.
Kasey McAteer ensured Vardy would be on the winning side in his final Leicester appearance by making it 2-0 -- the midfielder's first Premier League goal -- in the 69th minute.
"I'm happy I could play my way into the game and get on the scoresheet as well as Vardy," McAteer told Premier League Productions.
"It's classic Vardy, it's spoken about how he always delivers and that's what he's done for 13 years at this club... To play with him and call him my team-mate is an honour. I was buzzing he got his 200th goal."

Leeds United close to signing striker Lukas Nmecha on free transfer

Leeds United are close to securing the signing of forward Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer. The 26-year-old's deal at German side Wolfsburg expires at the end of the month. A move to Leeds would become official on July 1 and an agreement on a two-year contract is in place. The Germany international came through Manchester City's academy alongside his brother, Felix, who plays for Borussia Dortmund. Nmecha made just three substitute appearances for City and had loan spells with Preston North End, Wolfsburg, Middlesbrough and Anderlecht — where he scored 21 goals in a season under Vincent Kompany — before returning to Wolfsburg permanently in 2021. Nmecha has represented Germany seven times at senior level, having switched allegiances permanently from England in 2019. He helped his nation win the European Under-21 Championship in 2021 and finished as the top goalscorer at the tournament. The centre forward made 20 appearances for Wolfsburg in the 2024-25 campaign, three of which were starts, and scored three goals. The beginning of his season was disrupted by a hamstring injury, while he also missed five games in February and March due to an adductor issue. Advertisement Nmecha has recorded 19 goals and four assists in 85 matches for the Bundesliga club. Nmecha would become Leeds' first signing of the summer transfer window upon their return to the Premier League. Daniel Farke's side pipped Burnley to the Championship title on the final day of the 2024-25 season on goal difference, securing their return to the top-flight after two years in England's second tier. Transfer news: Gyokeres to Arsenal, Ekitike to Manchester United

The latest transfer news continues to swirl as Premier League big boys are eyeing up some huge moves early in the summer. Let's focus on the latest transfer news making the headlines. Viktor Gyokeres heading to Arsenal? The Swedish striker, 27, has been linked with every big club in Europe over the last few years and it seems certain he will leave Sporting Lisbon this summer. But according to Fabrizio Romano, he will not be heading to Manchester United to link up with his former manager Ruben Amorim. Per the report, Gyokeres is keen on a move to Arsenal and that is his priority. That news will delight Gunners fans as Gyokeres would be a totally different profile of striker and his arrival would give them the clinical finisher they've been craving. It would also free up Kai Havertz to play as a No. 10 or on the left and that makes the Gunners much stronger in attack. Gyokeres has scored 97 goals in 102 games in all competitions for Sporting over the last two seasons and his large frame is ideal for hold up play, plus his ability to run free on the counter will suit Arsenal's style perfectly. There are other reports suggesting that Arsenal are becoming frustrated with Sporting but if Gyokeres wants this move, the Gunners have to get it done. Soon. Manchester United in the hunt for Hugo Ekitike Eintracht Frankfurt's young French striker Hugo Ekitike is being chased by Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United as the 22-year-old is projected to become one of the best all-round forwards in the world. According to FootMercato, discussions are ongoing between Man United and Ekitike over a deal and it's progressing in the right direction. He is valued at over $108 million by Frankfurt after a breakout campaign which saw him score 22 times in all competitions last season. United have already signed Matheus Cunha to boost their attacking options next season and another striker is essential if they're going to become candidates to qualify for the Champions League in Ruben Amorim's first full season in charge. With Gyokeres not wanting a move to United, it appears the Red Devils are now going all-in on Ekitike. He fits the profile of player they have been signing in recent windows and is in the sweet spot of having plenty of potential and room for improvement, but also proving himself as a regular goalscorer in one of Europe's top leagues. United need the latter desperately.
