Trial of Calvin Crew, man accused of murder Uber driver, continues with ex-girlfriend's testimony
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The trial of Calvin Crew, the man accused of murdering Uber driver Christina Spicuzza in Monroeville two years ago, continued on Wednesday.
His former girlfriend resumed her testimony saying the night of the alleged killing, Crew made a FaceTime call to her from inside a car, a car prosecutors believe was the one Spicuzza was driving before her death.
Records indicate the time of the call was around 10:30 p.m. the night of the killing in February of 2022. Investigators believe Spicuzza was already dead by 10 p.m.
Tanaya Mullen also told the jury that she noticed her gun was gone from the top drawer. Mullen said at one point after the alleged homicide, Crew told her to tell police she lost the gun.
When asked if she would lie for Crew, Mullen said, "I wasn't going to lie for Calvin, I wasn't going to lie about anyone."
Allegheny County detective testifies
Allegheny County police detective William Herman also took the stand Wednesday. Herman testified his task in the investigation was to find any video evidence.
Herman told the jury he used video from several places to track where Spicuzza's car was. He told the jurors the search for video revealed the car was parked at 504 Fourth Street in Pitcairn followed by a lone individual stepping out and walking away. Prosecutors contended that person was then-22-year-old Calvin Crew.

Former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teacher charged with child sex crimes; law firms represent multiple victims across states
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A former middle school principal now facing serious child sex abuse charges in Missouri once worked for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. According to law enforcement and legal representatives, Cedric Gerald, 48, who most recently served as a principal at Westview Middle School in the Riverview Gardens School District in St. Louis County, has been charged with multiple crimes, including sexual trafficking of a child, sexual exploitation of a minor, and possession of child pornography. Medic: 12 injured in reported assault at southwest Charlotte McDonald's At least four Westview Middle students have come forward, alleging Gerald engaged in inappropriate and illegal behavior, including explicit FaceTime calls, sexual contact at school, and harassment. St. Louis County Police said Gerald admitted to several of the accusations. Before working in Missouri, Gerald spent at least 16 years with CMS as a teacher and literacy coach. He later held positions in other districts in North Carolina and Missouri. In response to questions about Gerald's history, CMS issued this statement: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools follows standard hiring procedures. Positions are posted, interviews are conducted, and recommendations to hire are made. All new hires go through a criminal background check, drug test, and fingerprints through the Standard Bureau of Investigation. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Two law firms, identified as Simon Law and the O'Brien Law Firm, are now representing at least six victims from multiple school districts. They're encouraging others who may have been harmed, including outside Missouri, to come forward. 'We have information that his abuse spans more than one school district,' Boyd said in a written statement, released on Tuesday. 'That's why we are investigating Riverview Gardens School District's practices, and how they failed to take proactive and reactive measures to protect students.' Former jail employee and girlfriend of escaped New Orleans inmate arrested in connection with case
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Officials with the U.S. Marshals have announced the arrest of a woman in connection to the May breakout at the Orleans Parish jail in New Orleans. U.S. Marshals officials said Darriana Burton, 28, was arrested in New Orleans on Monday, June 9. She had been wanted on a warrant for conspiracy to commit simple escape, a felony, from the Louisiana Attorney General's Office. Burton is a former jail employee and the girlfriend of Derrick Groves, one of two inmates who is still at large after the escape, the Associated Press reported. The other at-large escapee has been identified as Antoine Massey. Escaped inmate known as 'Devil in the Ozarks' found a 'short distance' from prison: sheriff Groves, Massey, and eight other inmates escaped from the Orleans Parish Prison on May 16 by yanking open a faulty cell door, removing a toilet, crawling through a hole, and scaling a barbed wire fence in the early morning hours when a lone guard left to get food. Two days before the escape, Groves made a FaceTime video call to Burton using a jail-issued iPad, authorities said. During that call, she helped him speak with a man whom police did not identify. The conversation was 'intentionally vague' and appeared to coordinate communication on other, unmonitored lines, according to a police affidavit for Burton's arrest. The exchange showed Burton's direct role in helping with Groves' escape, police said in the arrest affidavit. Burton and Groves 'were in an on-again, off-again relationship for three years,' dating back to the time when she was still working in the jail, authorities said. Burton began working at the jail in 2022, but was fired after being 'arrested and charged for bringing contraband into the jail and malfeasance in office in 2023,' the attorney general's office explained. The attorney general's office reported that the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office refused the charges in 2024. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
