Manchester City director James Smith to return to Everton in recruitment role
Manchester City's director of scouting and recruitment James Smith is leaving the club and is expected to re-join Everton.
Smith's anticipated return to Goodison Park – where he was head of technical scouting from 2003 during David Moyes' first spell in charge, before following the Scot to Manchester United in 2013 – would continue a behind-the-scenes revamp under new chief executive Angus Kinnear.

There is a healthy relationship between the Premier League sides and talks over Smith's return to Merseyside have been amicable.
Smith has been placed on gardening leave by City, who are also restructuring their set-up under new director of football Hugo Viana.
Viana is picking up where his predecessor, Txiki Begiristain, left off in aiming to strengthen the link between senior and youth levels at the Etihad Stadium.
A reunion of Moyes and Smith will be seen by many as a coup for Everton, with the former highly-regarded in the game after his work at the two Manchester clubs.
Smith would effectively replace Dan Purdy, Everton's former head of recruitment who The Athletic revealed in April had decided to leave.
Purdy has since joined former Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell at Rangers.
Everton's new set-up also includes Nick Hammond as head of trading/negotiating, having joined from Leeds United, and Chris Howarth, the head of strategy.
They are also hoping to install a new head of football operations following a process being handled by executive search firm Nolan Partners.
Former Leeds director Kinnear, to whom Smith will report, started his role last month following the decision by new owners, The Friedkin Group (TFG), not to renew Thelwell's contract in a major executive overhaul.
It promises to be a pivotal summer transfer window for the Merseyside club before they head into their new stadium with 15 players, at one stage, set to see their deals expire at the end of June.
It has already been announced that three of that group, Ashley Young and backup goalkeepers Joao Virginia and Asmir Begovic, are to leave the club.
Midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure will also depart after turning down a new deal, but Everton have exercised the €15million purchase option to make Carlos Alcaraz's loan from Flamengo permanent.

Aston Villa open talks for 19-year-old La Liga wonderkid
Real Betis enjoyed a brilliant second half of the season, resulting in an historic run to the Conference League final against Chelsea. However Los Verdiblancos are in danger of losing two the instigators of that excellent form. One of those is a case of seduction, as Betis hope to bring back Brazilian winger Antony, who played a starring role in the final months for Betis. In that instance, Betis must hope that nobody comes in with an acceptable offer for Manchester United, and they can bring him back on loan. Jesus Rodriguez future in doubt The other concern is potentially losing one of their rough diamonds in winger Jesus Rodriguez. Bursting onto the scene at the age of just 19, his direct running and pace were important for Manuel Pellegrini on the left flank. The concern is that the Premier League may come calling. Rodriguez has already had his contract extended until 2029. He has a release clause of €50m, and Fabrizio Romano reports that Villa have opened talks with Betis over a potential deal. Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool scout Rodriguez Earlier in the season it was reported that Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool had all sent scouts to watch the teenage winger at the Benito Villamarin, and it does not seem to be ruled out that Los Verdiblancos could cash in on him. In recent weeks Rodriguez revealed on television that his agent was speaking to clubs, even if he was happy at Betis, and they would assess any offers that arrived. Image viaBetis sold another teenage academy product in Assane Diao to Como in January, after a similarly promising opening six months to his professional career. That said, his value dropped after losing his spot in the line-up, and Betis may feel they are best off selling while his value is high.

Liverpool agrees to pay record fee of $157 million for Florian Wirtz, reports say
Associated Press LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool has agreed to pay a transfer fee of 116 million pounds ($157 million) for attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, British media reported Friday. The deal for the 22-year-old Germany international includes a guaranteed 100 million pounds plus 16 million pounds in add-ons, which if achieved would make it a British record. The Premier League record for an initial fee was set when Chelsea signed Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for 106.7 million pounds ($131.4 million at the time) in 2023. Later that summer, Chelsea then agreed to pay up to 115 million pounds ($146 million at the time) — with 100 million pounds up front — for midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton. British media including the BBC reported the Wirtz fee — which would be a Liverpool record — without citing a source. Sky Sports reported the fee to be 116.5 million pounds. Wirtz's move has been expected for several weeks and the player has seemed to confirm it himself on his Instagram account, dismissing reports he asked for the No. 10 shirt held by Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. Wirtz is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days ahead of the signing. Liverpool is aiming to build a dynasty after winning the Premier League title this season. Wirtz would reunite with former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong after the Dutch right back signed for Liverpool for a reported 35 to 40 million euros ($39.7 million to $45.4 million) last month. Wirtz only turned 22 last month but has been a key first-team player for Leverkusen since he was 17. He was the star attacking player in the team that won the Bundesliga and German Cup in 2023-24 without losing a game. ___ AP soccer: recommended
