Portugal searches in Madeleine McCann case to end

Investigators looking in to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are to conclude their latest searches after three days scouring scrubland and abandoned structures. Officers could be seen holding pitchforks as they combed an area on the outskirts of Lagos in Portugal today. Teams of German and Portuguese police officers, as well as firefighters, used pick-axes and shovels to dig some of the undergrowth. A digger was also deployed to remove rubble from one of the abandoned structures at the site. The operation comes 18 years after the three-year-old British girl disappeared from nearby Praia da Luz while on holiday with her family. The toddler vanished in 2007 after she was left sleeping while her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, went for dinner in a nearby restaurant. Personnel have spent two days focusing on one particular derelict building, using a ground-penetrating radar on the cobbled ground after clearing the area of debris and vegetation using a digger and chainsaws. British officers have not been present at the latest searches, London's Metropolitan Police said. Madeleine's parents are not commenting during the "active police investigation", staff at the Find Madeleine Campaign said. German authorities requested the search as part of their continued attempts to source evidence to implicate prime suspect Christian Brueckner, who is in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005. He is due to be released from jail in September if no further charges are brought. Last October, Brueckner was cleared by a German court of unrelated sexual offences, alleged to have taken place in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. In 2023, investigators carried out searches near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, about 50km from Praia da Luz.

Royal Family in security scare as drug-crazed intruder breaks into Windsor Castle yards away from Kate and Wills' home

A source said: 'The intruder is believed to have been under the influence of drugs at the time of the break-in. 'He broke into the castle near Town Gate and was quickly detained by police. 'It was a crazy thing to do and caused quite a stir but at this stage it appears there was no intent to cause any serious harm.' Advertisement Most read in The Sun It is understood the Prince and Princess of Wales were staying at Adelaide Cottage, their home on the Windsor estate, that day with children George, Charlotte and Louis. But it is unclear whether William and Kate were there at the time of the break-in, which occurred some distance away from their home. Desperate Harry & Meghan jump from idea to idea, only William & Kate have true clout Royal aides and close protection officers were informed of the security breach as a matter of routine. Police stressed the intruder did not reach the inner part of the castle, where state apartments, St George's Chapel and the Inner Hall are situated. Advertisement A Met Police spokesperson said: 'A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of trespass on a protected site and possession of Class A drugs after entering restricted grounds at Windsor Castle. 'Officers in the grounds spotted the man just after 13:00hrs on Sunday, 1 June and quickly arrested him. 'He was then passed into the custody of Thames Valley Police.' Under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act of 2005, it is an offence to trespass on a designated protected site such as a nuclear plant or Royal estate . Advertisement In October last year The Sun revealed how armed police officers have been removed from the castle's main public entrances. But gun cops still patrol inside the castle and rising remote-controlled bollards have been put up at the nearby Henry VIII Gate to stop terrorist ram raiders. Security at Windsor remains tight following a number of scares and scandals. They include 'comedy terrorist' Aaron Barchak managing to gate crash Prince William's 21st birthday party inside the walls in 2003. Advertisement The Sun tested security on the eve of Prince Charles' 2005 wedding and drove a hired van in through Henry VIII gate with a cardboard box in the back marked 'BOMB'. Then In 2012 a drunk man scaled a gate at Windsor Castle and got to within 65 metres of the Queen's private apartments when he was tackled by armed royalty protection officers. And in 2021 a maniac was arrested at Windsor Castle in possession of a crossbow after making a video saying he was on a mission to 'assassinate the Queen.' Star Wars fanatic Jaswant Singh Chail, 21, was arrested while the late monarch stayed in the castle on Christmas Day 2021. Oscar Pistorius' dad reveals rift with killer son because he DOESN'T accept disgraced Olympian murdered Reeva Steenkamp

THE dad of disgraced murderer Oscar Pistorius says the pair hardly speak anymore as he doesn't accept his son is a killer. Former Olympic sprinter Pistorius shot dead girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013 - but father Henke believes he was "full of fear" during his trial and accepted his jail sentence. 6 Henke Pistorius meets son Oscar as the estranged father says the pair hardly speak anymore Credit: AP:Associated Press 6 The disgraced runner shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp dead in 2013 Credit: Getty 6 Henke still doesn't accept his son is a killer Credit: YouTube Henke has now publicly admitted in a candid interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored that his refusal to accept his son's guilt has created a rift in their relationship. Pistorius hit Reeva, 29, with four bullets fired through the locked door of their bathroom in the early hours of Valentine's Day 2013. After a round of appeals and challenges, Pistorius - dubbed the "Blade Runner" because of his carbon-fibre prosthetic legs - was sentenced to 13 years and five months for murder. Pistorius, a six-time six Paralympic gold medallist, has always claimed the horrific shooting was a mistake. He told the court he thought his model and law graduate partner was an intruder. The sprinter was released after nine years back in January 2024. He has since vanished from the public eye and is trying to live a quiet life alongside his rumoured new girlfriend. But Henke has now told Oscar as I'm sitting here, because I said too much. Most read in The US Sun "We don't [speak regularly] because he knows how I feel. To him, he's guilty of murder because of the process that he's gone through. "The facts just do not support a finding of guilty of murder. Oscar Pistorius FREED on parole nearly 11 years after murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp "I just think that he will feel later, to walk away after parole as a person guilty of manslaughter versus a person guilty of murder, two vastly big things, and Oscar is not guilty of murder.' Pistorius was initially found guilty of culpable homicide, South Africa 's equivalent of manslaughter, in court . A year later, the Supreme Court overturned the ruling and found him guilty of murder. Henke continued: 'Obviously, Oscar was full of fear. Oscar will one day tell his story. "He is, at the moment, I'm sure, very sad and very sorry about what happened. "I can't speak for him. He will speak for himself, but what happened is not what came out of the court." Despite being freed from prison , Pistorius remains on parole. He moved into his wealthy uncle's £2 million Pretoria home, and now relies on him for protection. His tycoon uncle Arnold, who made his millions from property and tourism, hired armed guards with attack dogs, while his nephew lives in a cottage on the grounds. Pistorius' sentence ends in 2029 and he is subject to certain conditions for life outside jail.
