Magic Trade for $197 Million Star, Swap Underperforming $66 Million Vet Plus Haul originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Orlando Magic were coming into the offseason thinking of ways they could get better. For the past two seasons, they've made the playoffs but have been eliminated in the first round. Going forward, it's obvious they want things to change. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner are the two stars on the team, and they've been doing all they can to lead the Magic to the postseason for two straight years.

In order to compete in the Eastern Conference, the Magic knew they would have to improve their roster, and if that meant making a trade, then it seemed like they'd be ready to do it.

Well, look no further, because that's what they did on Sunday morning, acquiring Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies.
"BREAKING: The Memphis Grizzlies are trading Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and one first-round pick swap, sources tell ESPN," Shams Charania wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The Magic now have another solid starter on the team, as Bane can shoot, defend and make plays for others on the court. Bane averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 69 games this season

For the Grizzlies, they get two key role players that can help them compete in the Western Conference and four draft picks.
Bane is still playing on a five-year, $197 million contract, and the Magic did what they had to do to acquire the star. It seemed as if whatever deal they were going to make for somebody, Caldwell-Pope would be involved, as he's making $66 million on his three-year deal.

UConn's Dan Hurley is Trending After Major Knicks Coaching News

UConn's Dan Hurley is Trending After Major Knicks Coaching News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley, who has won two NCAA titles with the program, could have been hired by the Los Angeles Lakers in June 2024. In fact, the New Jersey native turned down their six-year, $70 million contract offer to remain with the Huskies, via ESPN. Advertisement The Lakers then hired 2006 No. 11 overall pick JJ Redick, who had never previously coached other than volunteering with his nine-year-old son's team at Brooklyn Basketball Academy. Los Angeles went 50-32 and earned the Western Conference's third seed under his leadership this season before getting bounced in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Meanwhile, Hurley took UConn to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, losing 77-75 to No. 1 Florida. Now, he's being mentioned by fans on social media as a worthy candidate for the New York Knicks after they fired Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday. Advertisement "The same people that felt confident Hurley would turn down the Lakers do NOT share that same optimism should the Knicks come calling," he said. "If there was ever a time and a team for Dan Hurley to jump to the NBA…it's now. The Knicks are the one job he would covet," another person said. "They are a championship contender with great leaders and an All-NBA lead guard." "I absolutely hate this [Thibodeau's firing]. Awful. Terrible. But... I've said that if the Knicks make change there's only 1 name. Dan Hurley," another one said. "I think Dan Hurley to the Knicks is like a 35% possibility, but I think they will go another direction," another one said. "Just a hunch, but time moves quickly and he's not the flavor of the month anymore." Advertisement "The Knicks need Dan Hurley," another one said. "This guy is one of the best basketball coaches in the world at any level. He will take them to a level they won't even believe, like he did with UConn, and bring a championship back to NY for the first time in 52 years. It's an obvious move." Knicks-Grizzlies Trade Report Surfaces After Desmond Bane Move

Knicks-Grizzlies Trade Report Surfaces After Desmond Bane Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The NBA offseason hasn't started, but that didn't stop the Memphis Grizzlies from making the summer's first blockbuster trade on Sunday. They sent guard Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic for four first-round picks, a first-round pick swap, guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and guard Cole Anthony. Advertisement This continues a transitional time for the Grizzlies, as they named Tuomas Iisalo their new head coach in May after he was the interim coach following Taylor Jenkins' firing. Now they'll be without their third-leading scorer from this season, as Bane averaged 19.2 points on 48.4 percent shooting (39.2 percent 3 PT) over 69 games. However, Memphis may not stop there, as the New York Knicks have an eye on one of its stars, via ClutchPoints' Kris Pursiainen. Memphis Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr. drives past Utah Jazz forward Kyle Filipowski at FedExForum on Jan. 25, Thomas-Imagn Images "But sources familiar with the situation tell ClutchPoints that at least one key member of the Knicks' front office has long been interested in [forward Jaren] Jackson Jr. as a trade target," he reported on Monday morning. Advertisement "The Knicks' acquisition of Karl-Anthony Towns last offseason didn't nullify this interest, either," he continued. "League sources say that a Jackson Jr. and Karl-Anthony Towns frontcourt would be a 'dream' pairing for New York in their starting lineup." Jackson's father, Jaren Jackson Sr., was an assistant coach for New York's G-League affiliate from 2021-23. Knicks president Leon Rose was also the younger Jackson's agent when he worked for Creative Artists Agency (CAA), alongside fellow agent Austin Brown. The two-time All-Star is still represented by Brown. Jackson signed with Rose and Brown for representation before getting drafted in 2018. Rose then took the New York job in March 2020. Connor McDavid is producing in the Stanley Cup Final, but is it enough for the Oilers?

It took until 13 minutes left in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final for Connor McDavid to score his first goal of the series, and it was after he and the Edmonton Oilers fell behind 3-0 to the Florida Panthers, on the way to losing and getting pushed to the brink. Before that, he led all scorers with six assists, and only teammate Leon Draisaitl has more points than McDavid's seven. Of course, the best hockey player in the world is in the spotlight no matter what he does, and he hasn't been able to break out and put the Oilers on his back thanks in large part to Selke Trophy winner Aleksander Barkov and the Panthers keying in on him defensively and slowing him down at all costs. Coach Kris Knoblauch thinks it has been a bit of an unfortunate final for McDavid given the amount of scoring chances that just haven't gone in. 'I think Connor's been one of our best players every single night, and that's what we expect,' Knoblauch said Sunday. 'I've got no issues with his game. Obviously, our team relies heavily on him and Leon and how they're playing, but I think that it's tight checking for everyone and it's not going to be a midseason game against a non-playoff team when sometimes he's had 10 or 12 scoring chances. Those numbers are obviously reduced playing against a good team like Florida.' The Panthers have defended McDavid and Draisaitl 'reasonably well,' according to coach Paul Maurice, who acknowledged two of the NHL's most talented forwards are bound to get their opportunities. Barkov's line, with Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart, has been tasked with playing against McDavid, perhaps to the detriment of offense. That's the job, so Reinhart was noticeably upset to give up that late goal Saturday night. 'I'm upset every time they get a goal,' Reinhart told reporters in Edmonton. 'It's a team effort defending guys like that. We've known all series the challenge is there for us. No one really cares in our locker room who's producing each night. It's just a matter that someone is at the right times. And that's what we've had.' McDavid led all scorers through three rounds playing with Zach Hyman on his right wing. Hyman's right wrist was dislocated with ligaments torn on a hit late in the Western Conference final, and left winger Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was bothered by an undisclosed injury during a stretch against Florida. Loading up by putting McDavid and Draisaitl on the ice together — the so-called 'nuclear option' — has not been used as often because Hyman isn't around. 'With the absence of Zach Hyman, it makes it more difficult putting those two together because of the depth of our lineup,' Knoblauch said. 'With what we have right now, to run those two together for long periods of time makes it more difficult for our depth on our team.' That puts even more pressure on McDavid in Game 6 on Tuesday night to keep the series going, as the Panthers again focus on preventing him from doing anything of the sort. ___ AP NHL playoffs: and
