Childers Palace Backpackers arsonist Robert Paul Long not being considered for parole
The killer responsible for a deadly hostel fire that claimed the lives of 15 people almost 25 years ago is not being considered for parole because he is considered a "restricted prisoner".
Robert Paul Long was sentenced to life in prison with a non-parole period of 20 years for setting fire to the Childers Palace Backpacker Hostel in Queensland on June 23, 2000.
There were 88 people inside, mostly young travellers visiting Australia from overseas.
Many of them woke to loud cracking sounds and the smell of fire, and frantically crawled through the thick smoke holding onto each other as they escaped.
But fifteen people — nine women and six men — were tragically killed.
Long, who was 37 at the time, was tracked down days later hiding in bushland, where he attacked a police officer with a knife.
The officer drew his firearm and shot at Long, who was injured in the ear before he was finally arrested.
Two years later he was convicted of arson, as well as the murders of Australian twins Kelly and Stacey Slarke.
Since then he has been confined to the walls of Wolston Correctional Centre, but has made multiple attempts to be freed.
Long made an application for parole, but the president of the Queensland Parole Board must decide whether to make a restricted prisoner declaration before he is considered for release.
A declaration can vary in length, but could mean he would not be able to apply for parole for up to 10 years.
"The parole application is not being considered while the restricted prisoner matter is determined by the president," a statement from Queensland Corrective Services said.
A decision on the declaration will be made after victims have been given time to make submissions.

A Victorian teacher who began a sexual relationship with an ex-student within two years of them graduating has been suspended from the profession for three years. Eleanor Yorke was sacked from Carey Grammar in Melbourne after it was discovered she had sent 35,000 messages to a then student before later having a sexual relationship with them. She accepted allegations of serious misconduct at a Victoria Institute of Teaching hearing in March. The allegations were first raised by the school in May 2023 and a month later her employment was terminated. She faced a hearing earlier this year after it was alleged that she violated her professional relationship with the then student – who cannot be identified for legal reasons – by having personal conversations with them. Her barrister told the hearing that she accepted the allegations made against her and that she was not fit to teach. 'There was agreement between the parties that each of the allegations outlined in the hearing book were substantiated,' the panel found. 'The teacher accepted that the allegations amounted to serious misconduct and that her registration should be cancelled.' The Victoria Institute of Teachers code of conduct was amended in 2021 to forbid teachers from engaging in sexual relationships with former students within two years of them graduating. The panel found that Yorke 'discussed this amendment of the code with the student and then chose to ignore it', calling it a 'deliberate rejection of professional standards'. 'The public has a right to believe that their children are protected, and the teacher's behaviour has the potential to undermine community confidence in teachers and schools,' the panel said in its judgment published on Thursday. The panel found that Yorke's behaviour warranted 'strong condemnation' 'Given that there was agreement that all allegations were substantiated, the panel decided that the protection of children, the message of general deterrence to others in the teaching profession and community expectations about trust and respect for the teaching profession required a strong sanction,' the judgment said. Yorke's registration was cancelled for three years beginning on March 24.

Court orders mental health report for alleged McDonald's bomb hoaxer Mark Robert Williams
The man accused of organising a disturbing bomb threat at a suburban McDonald's in Adelaide's outer north could be suffering from serious mental health challenges, a court has been told. Mark Robert Williams fronted Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Friday, some two weeks after he allegedly pretended to have a bomb in his bag at a Salisbury Plain McDonald's restaurant. The alleged hoax took place about 7.45pm on June 4, with police and bomb squad technicians racing to the scene on reports Mr Williams had left a bag inside the restaurant after claiming it contained a bomb. He was arrested and charged with creating the false belief that life has been lost or endangered. 'Patrols quickly evacuated the area and detained the man,' South Australian Police said at the time. 'Technicians from the Bomb Response Unit attended and determined that there were no explosives in the bag.' Mr Williams has remained on remand since then. On Friday, defence lawyer Kassandra Girolamo, for Mr Williams, notified magistrate Lana Chester that her client would withdraw his bail application after failing to find a suitable home detention address. 'Unfortunately, at the moment there is no housing available to Mr Williams,' she said. The 44-year-old man, from Parafield Gardens, interacted with a social worker and an NDIS worker, the court was told. Ms Girolamo said the facts of the case may intersect with mental health issues and asked Ms Chester to order a forensic report into Mr Williams' psychiatric condition now and in the past. 'As far as dealing with these matters moving forward, Your Honour would be aware of the facts in this matter, they do perhaps raise some questions regarding any mental health issues that Mr Williams suffers from,' she said. Ms Chester ordered the report and adjourned the matter until July 7. Mr Williams, appearing via videolink, interrupted the proceedings at times, talking in a halting manner.

AFP raids multimillion-dollar Double Bay home
Wild footage shows a man being escorted away from a home in one of Sydney's most exclusive suburbs by undercover police officers dressed up as tradies. Police swarmed a home on Holt Street in Double Bay on Friday afternoon, with officers dressed in riot gear following two men dressed in orange hi-vis shirts as they led the man away from the luxurious home. An unmarked police car blocked off the street with its lights flashing, and armed officers were seen stationed around the area. A spokesman for the Australian Federal Police confirmed officers had executed a search warrant at the premises 'as part of an ongoing criminal investigation'. 'A man has been arrested,' the spokesman said.
