AIB Portrait Prize seeks Wicklow applications after success of two Garden County artists
Run by the National Gallery, the AIB Portrait Prize highlights contemporary portraiture, welcomes entries from artists working in all media, both in Ireland and from Irish artists living abroad. The AIB Young Portrait Prize invites submissions from artists aged 18 and under.
Hundreds of artworks by artists working across all disciplines are considered by an expert judging panel, to be announced in the coming months.
Last year, Arann McCormack, from Greystones, received a highly commended prize in the AIB Portrait Prize 2024 with her piece 'I Never Promised you a Rose Garden', which delved into the intricate relationship that young women cultivate with themselves during their adolescence, highlighting the lessons they learn during this inherently traumatic yet creatively charged period of their life.
Meanwhile in the AIB Young Portrait Prize 2024, Allanah McDonald Brown (5), from Arklow, was announced as a winner in the category for ages 6 and under, for her portrait 'Allanah the Mermaid'.
Dr Caroline Campbell, director of the National Gallery of Ireland, said: "The AIB Portrait Prize and AIB Young Portrait Prize provide a platform to spotlight the exceptional talent of Irish portrait artists while encouraging the public to engage with modern Irish portraiture.
"Each year, the works selected showcase an impressive diversity of artistic voices. We are proud to continue our partnership with AIB and look forward to seeing the inspirations and subjects that have sparked creativity among artists of all generations."
The winning artist in the AIB Portrait Prize will be awarded a prize of €15,000 and a commission worth €5,000 to produce a new work for inclusion in the national portrait collection. Two additional prizes of €1,500 are awarded to highly commended works.
The AIB Young Portrait Prize aims to foster and support creativity, originality, and self-expression in children and young people. There are four age categories: aged 6 and under, 7–11, 12–15, and 16–18. Winners in each category, as well as an overall winner, are selected from a shortlist of works. Prizes include a bespoke art box and a cash prize for the winner.

School's Out for summer with new short animations from RTÉ Kids
Launching on Monday, 9 June 2025 across RTÉjr, RTÉ2 and the RTÉ Player, Sparks – School's Out is a magnificent collection of seven short original Irish animations, each offering a unique take on the end of the school term. Released as Boulder celebrates its 25th anniversary, the film is a joyful tribute to storytelling and a fitting milestone for the studio with a score by Eímear Noone and Craig Stuart Garfinkle. Monday at 6.35pm on RTÉjr Droid Academy from Pioneertown - Directed by Will Sliney Renowned Marvel comic book artist Will Sliney makes his directorial debut with Droid Academy, a striking 3D CGI animated short created in Blender for RTÉ as part of the Sparks short film initiative. The film premiered at the Animation Dingle Festival, drawing praise for its powerful message and visual innovation for the Pioneertown Productions' short. A playful robot struggles to fit into her rigid school environment. Unable to connect with her classmates, our hero is forced to break with routine and start to explore outside the rules of her school. By finally going outdoors for the first time she discovers the beauty of nature. She then brings those new connections back into the school hoping to make it a brighter place for all. Monday at 7.20am on RTÉjr/ 2.24pm on RTÉ2 Little One from Little Moon Animations - Directed by Avery Angle In this heartwarming short, we follow the daily walks home from school through a forest between a fox father and his young daughter cub and explore the little rituals of play and kindness that follow. Set against the backdrop of four seasons in one short year, we see them play games with leaves, protect themselves with conkers, distract themselves through snow and finally acknowledge their growth in Spring. In each of these scenes, they make and collect trinkets to display at home, gathering memories of their time together from the day. Irish TikToker goes on epic quest to find classic drink from 2010s
An Irish TikToker has embarked on an epic quest to determine if anywhere in the country still serves a classic drink from the 2010s. Being sold in the good old days in promos such as two for a tenner, the staple that was Zaconey and Coke was a bestseller in pubs and clubs around the country — becoming a particularly popular beverage of choice for the college students, before being unceremoniously discontinued in 2016. While bottles of the 'God's nectar' were knocking about until 2019, there are, unfortunately, only a finite number of bottles left; with TikToker Liam Mackessy going on a quest to try and find a bottle of the brown stuff. @liammackessy I feel we are closer to getting Zaconey back on the market but in case we don't succeed, Linnane's bar in Tralee is the place to be! 'We used to drink this all the time when we lived in Galway back in 2014, 2015,' Liam said. 'Let's do a little taste test and see if it brings back all those memories from that time.' Zaconey and Coke was a staple of the college town drink in the mid-2010s, with the drink being discontinued. However, some people are still looking for the finite bottles. While the drink has been discontinued, some people have shared that they have managed to keep their bottles over the years — with one person on the Ireland subreddit sharing an unopened bottle of Zaconey and writing 'Could this be the last one in Ireland?' '2 Zaconey and Coke for €10 (I think) in Workman's Dublin,' one person reminisced. 'Peak college years!'
