20-minute red card trial gets green light

The Citizen22-05-2025

The World Rugby Council has approved the global trial of the 20-minute red card in elite competitions.
This decision follows an extensive review of successful closed trials conducted in international and elite club rugby over the past year.
World Rugby said the 20-minute red card aims to maintain the spectacle and competitive integrity of elite matches, while upholding rugby's unwavering commitment to player welfare.
The trial will operate in all elite competitions ahead of a final decision on permanent adoption in 2026.
Under this trial, a player who commits foul play that is not deemed deliberate or intentional will receive a red card and be permanently removed from the game. However, their team may return to a full complement after 20 minutes by bringing on one of their available replacements. This ensures that individual players – not the contest as a whole – bear the consequence of reckless actions.
Importantly, referees retain the authority to issue a full and permanent red card for any foul play considered deliberate and highly dangerous. Two yellow cards will constitute a 20-minute red card, unless the second offence meets the threshold for a full red card.
The 20-minute red card will join the suite of global law trials already in effect and will make its world cup debut at the women's event in England this August, as well as being used in the U20 Championship in June.
'Our mission is to ensure rugby is a compelling sport to play and watch,' said World Rugby chairman Brett Robinson. 'The 20-minute red card preserves the fairness and drama of elite competition by punishing the individual, not the entire team or the spectacle.
'Player welfare is non-negotiable. We monitor data around head injuries, tackle height, and concussion rigorously – and transparently. If evidence ever indicated this trial posed greater risk, we would end it immediately.'

In other measures, the World Rugby Council approved a closed trial of a centralised disciplinary process, allowing for quicker and more consistent decision making.
The council also approved a measure so that from 2025, all law trials in the men's game will begin on August 1 each year, ensuring that all international matches are played under the same set of law and trials regardless of where in the world they are played.

RUMOUR: Orlando Pirates star Monyane to Kaizer Chiefs?

Orlando Pirates have a surplus of right-backs. Could Thabiso Monyane be on his way to Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs? SAFootClassics on X have shared a local report from SuperJourno suggesting that Orlando Pirates right-back Thabiso Monyane has been offered to Kaizer Chiefs. It's not the most far-fetched rumour we've ever heard. Pirates already have several players in that position, with Deano van Rooyen and Bandile Shandu currently vying for the role. Monyane and his namesake Thabiso Lebitso have hardly had a look-in, while Baroka star Tshepho Mashiloane is also on the verge of signing with the Buccaneers. 23-year-old Tshepho Mashiloane is Pirates' latest defensive recruit. The Baroka man can operate at right-back or in central midfield, which will be a considerable boost for the Pirates technical team; although they have a strong squad at their disposal, both full-back positions are a relative weak spot. With experience in the second tier, it's also hoped that he's ready for a battle. Orlando Pirates fans are expectant on Soweto Derby Day. Sharks lose Bok champ for Loftus clash

A key member in the pack and leader has been ruled out for the Sharks as the Durbanites chase a first Vodacom URC final against the Bulls in Pretoria tomorrow. The Sharks head to Loftus Versfeld riding high after a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Munster in Durban last week, but head coach John Plumtree has to do without skipper Eben Etzebeth for the semi-final clash with the Herd. Etzebeth was injured at training this week, so Corne Rahl has replaced the two-time Springbok world champion in the second row, while Siya Kolisi takes over the captaincy. URC REWIND: Bulls vs Sharks Lock Emile van Heerden also comes in for Jason Jenkins, who hasn't recovered from a knock. Deon Slabbert takes up a spot on the bench, along with centre Jurenzo Julius for Francois Venter. The rest of the lineup remains unchanged. Jake White's Bulls dispatched Edinburgh to book a successive home semi, and boast a strong Loftus record against the Sharks in the URC (3-2). However, recent form favours Plumtree's men, who claimed both league meetings this season, including a 29-19 upset in Pretoria. Sharks: 15 Aphelele Fassi, 14 Ethan Hooker, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Makazole Mapimpi, 10 Jordan Hendrikse, 9 Jaden Hendrikse, 8 Siya Kolisi (c), 7 Vincent Tshituka, 6 James Venter, 5 Emile van Heerden, 4 Corne Rahl, 3 Vincent Koch, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 Ox Nche. Bench: 16 Fez Mbatha, 17 Ntuthuko Mchunu, 18 Hanro Jacobs, 19 Deon Slabbert, 20 Phepsi Buthelezi, 21 Bradley Davids, 22 Jurenzo Julius, 23 Yaw Penxe. Mamelodi Sundowns issue injury updates as key players are sidelined Image Source (@MamelodiSundowns/Twitter) 'SABC Sport can confirm that Mamelodi Sundowns have triggered the option on one of their long-serving players in Thapelo Morena,' reads part of the report. 'The option means Sundowns have the defender on their books at least until the end of June 2026, but it is not yet clear at this stage whether there are imminent talks on a new contract altogether. 'Morena joins a list of several other players who had the option clause triggered – among them Terrence Mashego, Khuliso Mudau and Aubrey Modiba.'
