Doohan hopes to earn Celtic chance & become Scotland 'mainstay'
Ross Doohan has backed himself to get enough game time at Celtic to become "a mainstay" in the Scotland squad. After being handed a surprise international debut against Liechtenstein earlier this month amid a goalkeeping crisis within Steve Clarke's squad, the 27-year-old sealed a return to his boyhood club on a three-year deal last week.Doohan, who spent most of the past two seasons as number two at Aberdeen after leaving Parkhead to join Tranmere in 2022, is expected to start off as third choice at Celtic behind Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo."It's obviously going to be difficult," he said when asked about the battle to get game time with the Scottish champions. "There are two top goalkeepers at the club already and I'm buzzing to be working with them."I'm just looking to work as hard as I can and put my face out there. I'm hoping to push myself into the team. I know it'll be hard, but I back myself.Doohan said he had enjoyed "a surreal couple of weeks" after landing his return to Celtic so soon after his unexpected international debut. The keeper, who cut a summer holiday short to join up with Clarke's Scotland squad, is confident his big move can aid his quest to add to his solitary cap."If I get a call-up again I'm hoping I'd impress and hopefully end up a mainstay in the squad," Doohan added."Obviously I'm moving to one of the biggest clubs in the world and the biggest club in Scotland, so that's always going to put you in good stead. "I just need to push myself at Celtic, hopefully get some game time and then take it from there."

Will Kerkez offer an offensive boost?
Former West Ham and Wolves first-team coach Edu Rubio says Milos Kerkez has "great potential to grow even further" at Liverpool. "Milos Kerkez is a fantastic and a much-needed addition to Liverpool's squad. He is versatile; he can play left-back, left wing-back and even left centre-back," Rubio said."He has got great potential to grow even further on; yet Andy Robertson still has better offensive stats than him. Maybe because of the context/teams etc; but his numbers show his attacking input is remarkably good."Kerkez's solid defensive stats and his physical aptitude can offer Arne Slot a different option down the left flank. They are both excellent full-backs, but they are both different and unique."Milos' interceptions and clearances stats show he can make Liverpool even more difficult to break. Offensively his ball progressive carries is very good; which can help his team penetrate into the opposition's half faster, aggressively and efficiently. This can support Liverpool's offensive game too, no doubt."

I don't miss managing England
Former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate says he does not miss managing the Three Lions and carrying the "weight" of the job. The 54-year-old stepped down as England manager last summer after his side were beaten in the Euro 2024 final by guided England to two European Championship finals during his seven-and-a-half years in charge, finishing runner-up on both fourth-placed finish England achieved at the 2018 World Cup was the side's best performance at a major tournament since 1990. But the former Middlesbrough manager, who was knighted on Wednesday for his services to English football, says he does not miss being in charge of the team. "It is a little bit strange (watching the team) but also I'm not missing it," Southgate told BBC Sport."I think it's important that I am on that sofa and out of their way, you know, it's theirs to take on now and I think it's important that I give the team as much space as possible." Southgate became the fourth England manager in history to be knighted, after Sir Walter Winterbottom, Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby if he missed parts of the job, Southgate said it was a relief to no longer carry the expectations of a nation."I think it's hard to describe because until that weight's gone you don't necessarily realise just on a day-to-day basis, you know, every hour of my day was thinking about how do I make England better, what's happening with the players, how do we do things differently," he added."So I think any leader of big organisations, you're constantly thinking about how to do your job as well as you can."Thomas Tuchel replaced Southgate as manager following Lee Carsley's interim spell in German has won all three of his World Cup qualifiers at the helm, but England were beaten booed off after losing a friendly against Senegal at the City Ground earlier this month. After taking charge of the side, Tuchel said Southgate's England did not have a clear identity and "were more afraid to drop out" of Euro 2024 "than having the excitement and hunger to win it". "I don't think it's important how I took it (Tuchel's criticism) or what I think," Southgate said."I think what's really important is for me to give the team, the manager, the space to operate. I think that's the right thing to do. "I've had an amazing experience leading my country, but it's time for them to take it forward now and I'll be a fan at home supporting it."
