Taiwan plans stricter rules for officials' travel to China

TAIPEI: Taiwan is weighing stricter controls on travel to China by legislators and elected officials, potentially requiring prior approval to prevent infiltration efforts by Beijing, a national security official said on Saturday, Taipei Times reported.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the exposure of sensitive information through unofficial or undocumented exchanges during such visits.
President William Lai, in March, had unveiled a package of 17 countermeasures targeting
Chinese infiltration
, with a focus on ensuring transparency in the travel of civil servants to China. The measures aim to make officials publicly accountable for their cross-strait movements and limit opportunities for covert influence operations.
According to the official, the government is considering amending the act governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and Mainland Area to standardise travel regulations across all levels of public service. The proposed changes would apply to military personnel, civil servants, borough wardens, elected officials, and lawmakers, reported Taipei Times.
"As these people exercise public authority, they are prime targets of Chinese infiltration, and their trips to China should be open and transparent," the official said.
"The Legislative Yuan is a national security loophole," they said, pointing out that lawmakers currently are not obligated to seek approval for China trips despite having access to sensitive national information. Moreover, the legislature does not disclose which of its members handle classified data, unlike other government agencies that follow strict security reporting protocols.
Under the proposed system, travel oversight would be implemented through a tiered approach. "Grassroots civil servants would not be required to obtain permission to travel to China, but would have to publicly disclose their travel," the official said. In contrast, individuals with access to classified information would face tighter scrutiny, with some cases requiring joint reviews and formal approvals, Taipei Times reported.
Although lower-level public servants may not handle sensitive material, they remain potential infiltration targets, the official added.
Once revisions to the law are in place, a complete set of supporting measures will be rolled out to ensure consistent enforcement and oversight.

However, this is not the first time Nvidia is pointing out that the US export restrictions for China are harming the AI industry in America. Even during Computex last month, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said, "AI researchers are still doing AI research in China and if they don't have enough Nvidia, they will use their own [chips]," and he also spoke regarding Huawei specifically, saying the company has become "quite formidable", reported PC Gamer. While, it is not just the US national interest that has urged Nvidia to highlight all the possible negatives of export controls, as these restrictions have cost and will cost the chipmaker lots of money, according to the report. Nvidia had revealed that after billions of dollars lost due to the restrictions of its H20 chips to China in Q1, it's expecting another $8 billion to be lost for the same reason in Q2, reported PC Gamer. According to the report, Huawei's latest Ascend 910 and 920 chips, with the help of China's SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation), would be a better option for Chinese AI companies than trying to get their hands on Nvidia chips, as per the report. Why is Nvidia concerned about its AI researchers joining Huawei? Because it signals that export restrictions might be pushing top talent and innovation into China, instead of slowing its progress. How much money has Nvidia lost from these restrictions? Nvidia says it lost billions in Q1 and expects another $8 billion in losses in Q2 due to blocked chip sales to China.

"12 naxals with total bounty of over Rs 1 crore surrendered today": Maharashtra CM Fadnavis
Gadchiroli (Maharashtra) [India], June 6 (ANI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Friday that around 12 naxals, having a total bounty of over Rs one crore, surrendered before him in Gadhchiroli. Speaking with the media, CM Fadnavis urged the Naxals to surrender, adding that if they don't, then action will be taken against them. 'Today, around 12 naxals with a total bounty of over Rs 1 crore surrendered before me here. This is a big blow to Naxalism. The Naxals want to join the mainstream now. I believe this is a significant incident. There are very few Naxals left in the state today. I urge them to surrender. If they do not surrender, then action will be taken against them,' the Maharashtra CM said. According to a press note from the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Gadchiroli, a total of 704 active Maoists till date have surrendered before the Gadchiroli Police. It mentioned the 12 Maoists who surrendered today. 'Today, twelve Senior Maoist Cadre Sapana (55), Ramdas (55), Shivlal (60), Pushpa (55), Kosa Kumma Gota (Commander of Kutul LOS) aged 35 years, Durgi (35), Ajay (27), Sangita (40), Savita (35), Anju (25), Aruna (30) and Dilip (28) have surrendered before the Chief Minister,' the release stated. The release also mentioned the rewards announced by the Centre and Maharashtra government for the surrendered Naxals.'After surrender, Sapana, Ramdas, Shivlal, and Pushpa will receive Rs 8.5 Lakhs as reward declared by the Central & Maharashtra Government for rehabilitation,' the release stated. Kosa Kumma Gota will receive Rs. 5.5 Lakhs, Durgi and Ajay receive Rs 05 Lakhs, while Sangita, Savita, Anju and Aruna will receive Rs 4.5 lakhs. Dilip will receive Rs 5 lakhs as reward for rehabilitation. 'State government has announced a reward of Rs. 1.5 lakhs as additional assistance to Maoist members who are husband and wife for their surrender. Bangladesh political parties express mixed reactions over announcement of national election
Dhaka [Bangladesh], June 6 (ANI): Political parties in Bangladesh on Friday expressed mixed reactions to the announcement of the national election. Bangladesh's largest political party, BNP, expressed its disappointment over the timing of the election but Jamaat-e-Islami expressed satisfaction over the announcement. Chief Adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, on Friday announced that the next national election will be held in the first half of April 2026. BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said the announcement of national election has not fulfilled expectations of people. He said more than 50 parties want elections by December and if the government wanted, it could have held the elections by January. He said that the first half of April is 'an unreasonable time for voting'. Due to Ramadan, SSC exams and weather conditions, it will not be a suitable environment for election work at that time, he said. Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman expressed satisfaction and said an announcement has been made on the timing of the election. The Chief Adviser earlier said that the Election Commission will provide a detailed roadmap for the elections in due course 'I am announcing to the countrymen today that the next national elections will be held sometime in the first half of April 2026. Based on this announcement, the Election Commission will provide you with a detailed roadmap for the elections in due course,' he said an address to the nation through state television BTV on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted in a student-led uprising in August last year. She is now living in India on self-imposed exile. After Sheikh Hasina's fall, an interim government was formed under leadership of Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Laureate. (ANI)
