IN the wee small hours of Sunday at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Paris Saint-Germain's players were celebrating the greatest achievement of their lives.
They had ended the 14-year quest of their Qatari overlords to win the Champions League, having inflicted on Inter Milan the most comprehensive humping in the history of European Cup finals.

Luis Enrique will take his side to the Club World Cup in the US

But if Luis Enrique and his side had wanted to put their feet up and bask in this ultimate glory, then they were sadly mistaken.
Almost immediately after their 5-0 win, Enrique and his stars would be peppered with questions about their prospects at the Club World Cup — a 32-team, month-long tournament designed to carpet-bomb TV schedules with even more football, starting on Sunday week.
Does the Club World Cup now represent ultimate glory, rather than the Champions League?
Is that, in the words of Finchy in The Office, 'the real quiz'?

Because football — even in the odd-numbered summers which used to give us a brief respite from the thing — must never, ever rest.
And so next week, PSG will go to America, where they will play the Urawa Red Diamonds, The Last Shadow Puppets and the Seattle Sounders — only one of which is really the name of an English band.
And on Sunday week, Bayern Munich will play Auckland City in Cincinnati.
And they WILL play.

And there is nothing we can do to stop them playing. Even though we already know Bayern Munich are significantly better than Auckland City.
And Harry Kane will play. Even though his body is creaking.
Chelsea finally discover Club World Cup opponents as former star, 38, assists dramatic winner to set up reunion
Even though he hasn't had a proper rest in years. Even though he surely can't think of anything worse than having to play Auckland City.
Because Fifa are offering $1BILLION in prize money.
And two days later, you can watch in HD as Ulsan HD of South Korea play Mamelodi Sundowns, who are possibly an indie band who have an afternoon slot on Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage, or might be a football team from Pretoria in South Africa
Because in football there must be no sundown. Only the Mamelodi Sundowns.
And Manchester City and Chelsea will be there too, due to some convoluted Uefa qualification system which it's best not to ask about.
And Inter Miami will be there — not because of any system but because they employ Lionel Messi, who turns 38 this month and must be tired but must never, ever rest.
And the whole thing will go on for every bit as long as an actual World Cup, with countries, used to go on for.

Although not as long as next year's actual World Cup, which will have 48 nations and 104 matches in it and will go on for even longer.
Oh and there will still be a third-place play-off.
Because what else would we do with ourselves on Saturday July 18, 2026, if we couldn't watch another game of football between two utterly deflated, exhausted teams?
Manchester United didn't qualify for the Club World Cup.
But that doesn't matter because, after the worst season in their modern history, United's players travelled 14,000 miles to play post-season friendlies in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong so that the club could fulfil £10million worth of sponsorship commitments.
And yes 'net zero' is supposed to be an environmental policy rather than United's goalscoring output against the ASEAN All-Stars. During the half-time interval of that 1-0 defeat in Malaysia, Andre Onana, Harry Maguire and Diogo Dalot were substituted so they could board a private jet to Mumbai to promote Apollo tyres.
Because people in Mumbai will choose Apollo tyres if an error-prone Cameroonian goalkeeper tells them to.
And Michelin and Bridgestone and Pirelli won't get a look in, just so long as Dalot presses home Apollo's core messages, which are 'Going The Distance' and 'Conquer Every Road'.

While Maguire was flying to India, to tell people that 'the journey is as important as the destination', Amad Diallo was still in Malaysia, where he was giving the middle finger to a fan who had apparently abused his mother.
And then issuing a social-media apology, in which he said he didn't actually regret giving the finger.
Because it isn't enough that Amad's mother is abused during the football season.
She needs to be abused during the close season as well.
And her son needs to retaliate.
Because there needs to be online content and, if the internet never sleeps, then why should football sleep, along with its content-creating by-product, the abuse of really tired footballers?
Last year, Tottenham and Newcastle made a 21,000-mile round trip to Melbourne to play each other, six weeks after they had previously done so. And the Toon won on penalties.
But is that really enough, when these footballers travelled in first-class luxury and stayed in excellent hotels?
The BBC's Race Across The World is an extraordinarily successful TV show because contestants must travel on overnight buses and then muck out animals to raise extra cash.

Why shouldn't footballers do the same on post-season and pre-season tours? Wouldn't that provide better content?
This Saturday, England will play a competitive match against Andorra, which won't be competitive.
And next Tuesday, England will play Senegal, when they won't really be England because so many of their players will be heading to the Club World Cup.
But it's not as if we'd have to wait long for football without this new thing.
Next month, there will be a North London Derby in Hong Kong and Bournemouth will play Everton at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, the venue for next summer's World Cup final.
Because why wouldn't we want to watch Bournemouth play Everton in July — even if, when the fixtures come out in a fortnight, we might find out that they are playing each other in August?
The thing is, Bournemouth versus Everton has been far too parochial until now.
When Bournemouth are at home, only 11,000 people get in to watch it.
What about the blue-collar workers of New Jersey, the people Bruce Springsteen writes ballads about?
Don't they deserve their fix of Bournemouth versus Everton, instead of just shotgun, teenage weddings and dreaming about escaping from small towns on motorbikes, kind of stuff?
And the answer is, yes, they do deserve Bournemouth versus Everton. Just like you deserve Red Bull Salzburg, the second best team in Austria, versus CF Pachuca, the eighth best team in Mexico.
That one's on Wednesday June 18 at 11pm. Followed by Al-Ain versus Juventus at 2am.
Eyes down, look in. We'll sleep when we're dead.

Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko decision close as exits confirmed

Arsenal are yet to decide whether to move for Sporting goal machine Viktor Gyokeres or RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, but sporting director Andrea Berta is a busy man Arsenal are in the middle of a crucial period of the summer transfer window, with crunch time approaching in the race to sign top-class players. The Gunners know they need to bolster their squad if they are to win silverware next season and are determined to make the most of the current window. Mikel Arteta has guided his side to three successive second-place finishes in the Premier League, while Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-finals by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. New sporting director Andrea Berta is in place and is the man tasked with recruiting players capable of taking Arsenal to the next level. ‌ The transfer window has opened early this summer, due to the Club World Cup, and the club have wasted no time in getting down to business. A world-class striker is the No.1 priority on Berta's list and the former Atletico Madrid man is working on it. ‌ Meanwhile, he knows that exits are also needed to help accommodate the new signings, who will include Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who should be the first arrival of the summer for £51million. Here are the latest headlines from Mirror Football. Arsenal release 17 players Arsenal have confirmed the players who will leave the club on June 30 after not being offered new contracts. Among the list of youngsters from the academy are Jorginho, Kieran Tierney and Raheem Sterling. Jorginho is expected to move to Flamengo as a free agent once his deal expires. His departure will be covered for by the arrival of Zubimendi, who is a similar kind of player. Tierney has been linked with a return to Celtic and has already bid farewell to the club's fans with a statement. 'I feel so lucky that I've played for this club and the love that the supporters have given me has been amazing,' he said. 'I've loved every day here and I've learned so much, I've improved so much and I just feel very lucky.' Sterling, meanwhile, will return to Chelsea after his loan spell came to an end. The veteran forward failed to make an impact at Arsenal and will face an uncertain future this summer. ‌ Sesko vs Gyokeres decision Andrea Berta is still exploring the financial frameworks that would be required to sign Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko this summer. The Arsenal sporting director is the man in charge of leading the chase for a striker, but he is taking his time. Mirror Football understands that Gyokeres would be willing to join the Gunners, and Sporting would be willing to sell, if they stump up £60m as a transfer fee and well in excess of £200,000-a-week to make him one of the club's top earners. Arsenal have been tracking Sesko for longer and the RB Leipzig star is reported to have 'near universal backing' at the club due to his stronger data. ‌ Partey talks continuing Arsenal have confirmed that they remain in talks with Thomas Partey over a new contract. Partey's current deal will expire on June 30, but the club want to keep him in north London. Speaking recently, Arteta made it clear that Berta is the man tasked with keeping the midfielder, saying: "The intention is very clear. I'll leave that to Andrea and the club to take a step forward." The 31-year-old has attracted interest from Spain, where he previously played for Atletico Madrid before a £45m move to Arsenal. Barcelona have reportedly held talks over signing the Ghana international on a free transfer, but it seems likely he will stay put. Ruben Amorim plans loan move for Man Utd starlet as defender snubs rivals

Ruben Amorim is keen to overhaul his underperforming Manchester United squad that managed only a 15th place finish in the Premier League and he has already started on that rebuild by bringing in Matheus Cunha Manchester United have wasted little time getting stuck into the summer transfer window as Ruben Amorim bids to urgently overhaul his struggling squad. Amorim could only guide United to a 15th place finish in the Premier League, comfortably their worst campaign since the division's inception in 1992. He will be eager to secure more firepower for his frontline after watching Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggle for confidence up front, scoring just seven goals combined in the 2024-25 Premier League season. ‌ Amorim has already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves through the door and is aiming to complete a deal for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo in the coming days too. ‌ There are a number of players whose future look uncertain - such as Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony, and Amorim will be hoping he can get rid of his deadwood to top up his transfer budget for the summer. Mirror Football has taken a look through the biggest Manchester United news and rumours. Kone could leave on loan United have a number of talented young players in their academy and one of the brightest stars in 19-year-old midfielder Sekou Kone, who arrived for around £1million last summer. Kone has been thrown straight into the mix for the club's Under-21 side, playing nine times in Premier League 2 and he's even been named on the bench three times for Amorim's first team. He was involved in the squad that flew out to Asia for their post-season tour and came on twice as a substitute, but the club want him to pick up more minutes to get him up to scratch fitness wise. ‌ According to the Manchester Evening News, United have made him available for loan in order to fast-track his progression in the hopes he becomes a first team contender in the near future. Earlier this year, United Under-21 boss Travis Binnion said it was clear Kone was a massive talent, but that he needed more time before he was ready to compete for a spot in Amorim's team. Martinez rejects Napoli switch Of all the players Amorim is willing to let go of this summer, it's unlikely centre-back Lisandro Martinez will be one of them. ‌ The Argentine defender is currently recovering from a long-term ACL injury and is hoping to return by September. Martinez managed 20 starts in the Premier League, scoring twice, but couldn't stop United's slide down the table. He is now said to be of interest to Serie A side Napoli, who have just won the Serie A under Antonio Conte. ‌ Napoli would be able to offer Martinez Champions League football this season, but according to the Daily Mail the 27-year-old is not interested in the move. The report claims Martinez is "determined" to stay and succeed at Old Trafford, even if he is handed more opportunities to play in Europe's elite competition this summer. It says Napoli had been exploring opportunities to find bargain deals and were hoping to take advantage of United's willingness to sell players. ‌ But Martinez is seen as a reliable senior member of Amorim's dressing room and the club are hoping he can help lead a revival under the Portuguese boss this season. Gyokeres drops hint on future Viktor Gyokeres has been linked with Manchester United ever since Amorim arrived at Old Trafford after his incredible goalscoring exploits for Sporting Lisbon. There is no doubt that Gyokeres would dramatically change the club's fortunes after he smashed in 53 goals in all competitions, the highest total of any striker in Europe's top leagues. ‌ His performances have led to a string of clubs competing for his signature, with Arsenal and United said to be the leading contenders. However, the Red Devils may have hurt their chances of signing the player after failing to qualify for the Champions League - or any European competition whatsoever - handing the advantage to Arsenal. ‌ In any case, Gyokeres appears to have handed any interested party a blow by admitting he was "at home" in Lisbon. The former Coventry striker told Vogue Scandinavia, via A Bola: "In Swedish culture, people work hard during the week and if they want to do something, they do it on the weekend," Gyokeres revealed to Vogue Scandinavia via Portuguese outlet A Bola. "Here, people also make the most of the weekdays. They come over with friends on Monday or any other day of the week, have dinner and a glass of wine. "In Sweden, that's rare. That's the big difference. Lisbon is one of the best cities in Europe... I feel at home."

Paul Scholes slammed for 'worst bit of punditry ever' after 'outrageous' comment

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo has enjoyed a superb season for the Blues as he helped them finish in the top four - but pundit Paul Scholes was not impressed with his performances Paul Scholes has been slammed by fans for "one of the worst bits of punditry ever" after claiming Chelsea star Moises Caicedo"didn't contribute" to their season. The midfielder was an ever-present for Enzo Maresca 's side in the Premier League, playing all 38 games and impressing many with his battling performances. Caicedo managed the most passes, most passes completed, most touches, most possessions won and most tackles of any midfielder in the top flight and was a big part of Chelsea qualifying for the Champions League. ‌ But Scholes left fans baffled by suggesting Caicedo "didn't create or control a lot of games" while also questioning his "quality". ‌ Speaking on the Overlap Fan Debate, he said: "I think a lot of people talk about Caicedo. 'He's played 38 games'. Brilliant, what an achievement. "But was there much quality? Did he create a lot? Did he control a lot of games for Chelsea? I don't remember that. I think there's an era now, with midfielders especially, where you can go through seasons and games without really contributing." Scholes' comments have been blasted by fans on social media, with one calling his remarks "absolutely outrageous". "This is genuinely one of the worst bits of punditry I've ever seen," the post read. "And if Paul Scholes has said this he quite simply doesn't watch much football. Saying Caicedo is 'not contributing much' is absolutely outrageous." Another took aim at his "shocking" view and claimed it showed he hadn't watched much of Chelsea play this season. "Scholes' point about midfielders as a whole is valid but his take on Caicedo specifically here is shocking," the fan wrote. "He's been class this season. Scholes should know better on Caicedo this season. I don't think he's watched enough Chelsea, simple as that." ‌ "Paul Scholes is the worst pundit by a mile," another said. "You can't watch Chelsea's games, and do even a 30-second stat check, and think Moises Caicedo that was a star for Brighton, and now Chelsea doesn't "contribute a lot". Caicedo joined Chelsea for a British club record deal of £115million from Brighton in 2023 and a solid first season as the club finished sixth under Mauricio Pochettino - but was much more improved after working with Maresca in 2024-25. ‌ He started his career Independiente del Valle in his native Ecuador before sealing a move to the Seagulls in 2021. Caicedo only played one full season at the Amex before Chelsea decided to splash the cash on him. Caicedo rounded off his superb season by scoring for Chelsea in their UEFA Conference League final win over Real Betis, netting the final goal in stoppage time of their 4-1 triumph.
