Braves hire ex-skipper Fredi Gonzalez to fix 3B coaching woes
June 3 - The Atlanta Braves brought back former manager Fredi Gonzalez back to coach third base on Tuesday after a series of base-running blunders.
He replaces Matt Tuiasosopo, who accepted a new position as a minor league infield coordinator.
The Braves have seen four runners thrown out at home plate this season, including a crucial ninth-inning play in a 2-1 loss to the San Diego Padres on May 23 and an easy cut-down of Alex Verdugo by Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran in a 7-6 loss on May 17.
It's a role reversal as Gonzalez, 61, joins manager Brian Snitker's coaching staff.
Snitker was the third-base coach for the first two years of Gonzalez's stint as Atlanta's skipper from 2011-16. The Braves had a .512 winning percentage under Gonzalez and made the playoffs in 2012 and 2013. But after a 67-95 record in 2015 and a rough start to 2016, Snitker replaced Gonzalez in May of that year.
General manager Alex Anthopoulos said the team didn't seriously consider making the change at third base until Sunday, and that Gonzalez's availability was key to the decision.
"If he hadn't been available, I can't tell you we would have made this move, because it wasn't just make it to make it," Anthopoulos said, per The Athletic. "It had to be the right person and someone that could hit the ground running that we knew would be successful at it. And Fredi's proven that at the big-league level for years."
Gonzalez also managed the Miami Marlins from 2007-10, winning The Sporting News Manager of the Year award in 2008, and returned to the Marlins to coach third base from 2017-19.
Most recently, he spent five seasons coaching with the Baltimore Orioles before being let go at the end of the 2024 campaign.

All the shocking connections that linked Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce long before they started dating
A fan has claimed to have found a series of shocking connections that linked Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce long before they got together. Ever since they started dating in the summer of 2023, the singer, 35, and the football star, also 35, have been couple goals. From packing on PDA on the field after his football games to holding hands during romantic date nights in New York City, there's no denying that the stars are as happy as could be together. And according to one Swiftie, their relationship may have been written in the stars - as they claimed to have discovered some weird coincidences in the duo's pasts that they believe are proof they were always destined to fall in love. 'The invisible string between Taylor and Travis, a thread,' the fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter, before sharing all the surprising ways Taylor and Travis' paths crossed before they became boyfriend and girlfriend. First, the fan shared a snap of Taylor posing in front of a Chiefs poster backstage at her Reputation tour in 2018. They also posted a photo of her holding up a Chiefs jersey as she posed with former Chiefs player Chase Daniel - who threw Travis his first NFL touchdown - in 2014. The fan also pointed out that Taylor has sung about the colors red and gold in many of her songs over the years - which are the Chiefs' colors. 'The invisible string between Taylor and Travis, a thread,' the fan wrote on X, before sharing all the surprising ways Taylor and Travis' paths crossed before they became a couple They also revealed that Travis previously hung out with Taylor's best friend Selena Gomez at a charity even in 2019. Selena and Travis were also at same event together in 2015. Another surprising connection between the lovebirds is that Taylor performed at Arrowhead stadium - where the Chiefs play - for the first time ever on September 24, 2011, during her Speak Now Tour. And the first time she attended a Chiefs game at the stadium after she and Travis started dating was on the exact same date 12 years later. The fan also reminded her followers that Travis attended Taylor's concert for the first time on July 8, where he famously tried to slip her his number on a friendship bracelet. That happened to be just one day after she posted a slew of photos from her annual 4th of July party, which she captioned, 'Happy belated Independence Day from your local neighborhood independent girlies.' The Swiftie pointed out that Taylor has a lyric in a song that came out long before she met Travis that says, 'After the storm something was born on the 4th of July.' In addition, the interview in which Travis first discussed his attempt to give Taylor his number - which seemingly started it all - debuted on a Wednesday, and a line in her 2012 song Begin Again states, 'On a Wednesday, in a café, I watched it Begin Again.' The X user also revealed that Taylor's tour dancer Kameron 'Kam' Saunders' brother played football on Travis' team, and that Post Malone - who collaborated with the Cruel Summer songstress on her hit Fortnight - has a tattoo of Travis' signature on his arm and has been a longtime fan of the football player. Their thread quickly went viral, gaining tons of replies from stunned fans who couldn't believe all the small ways in which Taylor and Travis' lives were intertwined Taylor and Travis also have a surprising mutual friend - they are both longtime pals with Miles Teller. Lastly, the fan revealed that a couple had dressed up as Taylor and Travis on Halloween in 2020 - three years before they got together. The thread quickly went viral, gaining more than 34,000 likes and tons of replies from stunned fans who couldn't believe all the small ways in which Taylor and Travis' lives were intertwined. 'Wow,' one user wrote, while another added, 'They're perfect for each other.' 'Love how fate connects them in unexpected ways,' gushed someone else. 'They are soulmates,' read a fourth tweet. A fifth said, 'The way that you'll never convince me this wasn't fate, like, they're soulmates.'

TSX futures inch up ahead of key economic data
June 5 (Reuters) - Futures linked to Canada's primary stock index rose slightly on Thursday, as investors awaited economic data from the United States and home to assess the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on the economy and global trade. The S&P/TSX index futures were up 0.2% at 6:35 am ET (1035 GMT). Data scheduled for Thursday are U.S. initial jobless claims and the international trade report at 08:30 a.m. ET. Focus will also be on Friday's employment figures from Canada and non-farm payrolls data from the U.S. to assess the effect of Trump's trade policies on the labour market. Meanwhile, the United States' tariff hike on steel and aluminum took effect on Wednesday. Canada, the largest seller of the metals to the U.S., exports roughly twice as much aluminum as the rest of the top 10 exporters combined. Canadian companies and a major union said higher U.S. tariffs could result in more job losses and lost sales. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is prepared to strike back against the U.S. if talks with Washington to remove tariffs do not succeed. Also on Thursday, China blocked Canada's request to set up a dispute panel to review additional import duties by Beijing on certain Canadian products. Eyes will be on potential negotiations between Washington and its trading partners, with Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping expected to speak sometime this week. In commodities, oil and gold prices held steady, while London copper prices inched up. Canada's commodity-linked main stock index fell on Wednesday as lower oil prices weighed on energy shares. Gillette maker Procter & Gamble to cut 7,000 jobs in two-year overhaul
The company behind Gillette and Pampers has announced plans to cut up to 7,000 jobs over the next two years as part of a restructuring programme. US-based Procter & Gamble (P&G) unveiled the plans during a strategy update on Thursday. The multinational manufacturing giant said it would be reducing its current non-manufacturing workforce by about 15%. The 7,000 affected roles represent about 6% of its total workforce. The two-year restructuring programme will help it make changes resulting in 'efficiencies, faster innovation, and cost reduction', according to the firm. P&G did not specify which roles will be affected or where they will be based. The Ohio-based company hired about 108,000 employees at the end of June last year. Around half of those were in manufacturing roles, and more than a quarter were based in the US. It makes a range of household brands including Ariel, Oral-B, Always and Tampax, and hair care brands Head & Shoulders and Herbal Essences. P&G recently said it was exposed to risks in the global economic environment, including new and increased tariffs, particularly between the US and China. This is because its products are sold in countries around the world so it is likely to be affected by increased costs for importing goods. It has said it could continue to raise prices on some brands to mitigate the impact of cost increases, which it admitted could have a knock-on effect on demand and sales.
