Corral smashes Liga MX Femenil goal record with 21 strikes and counting
April 15 (Reuters) - Pachuca striker Charlyn Corral has rewritten the Liga MX Femenil record books, netting an unprecedented 21 goals with still one match remaining in the regular season.
The Mexican forward's scoring spree surpassed her own previous benchmark of 20 goals set during the Clausura 2023 tournament, establishing a new high-water mark in Mexican women's professional football.
"Genius, idol, artist, master, machine, tiger, beast, earthquake, lightning, tsunami, indomitable, supreme mind, Kung fu master, peerless warrior. And they fall short, simply: Charlyn Corral," Liga MX Femenil posted on social media, Mexican daily sports newspaper Esto reported.
The 33-year-old is poised to claim her fourth individual scoring title in the Clausura 2025 Tournament, having previously topped the charts with 20 goals in Clausura 2023, 19 in Clausura 2024, and 18 in Apertura 2024, before eclipsing her own benchmark this season.
Corral's record-breaking tally could increase as Pachuca next host Tigres on Saturday in the 17th and final match of the regular phase Clausura.

PARIS, June 6 (Reuters) - The French Open women's singles final takes centre stage at Roland Garros on Saturday. World number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus takes on last year's semi-finalist, American Coco Gauff, as she looks to land her first French Open crown to add to her three Grand Slam titles. Long considered a hardcourt specialist, the 27-year-old top seed Sabalenka, the most powerful player on the tour, will try to establish herself as an all-rounder with her first title in Paris. She has already won back-to-back titles at the Australian Open in 2023-24 as well as the U.S. Open crown in 2024 but she had never before reached the final in Paris with the slower clay not naturally suited to her heavy-hitting game. Her three-set semi-final victory on Thursday over four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek, who was looking to become the first woman since tennis turned professional in 1968 to win four editions of the tournament in a row, elevated Sabalenka to a new level. New prospects get test opportunity as South Africa name squad to tour Zimbabwe
CAPE TOWN, June 6 (Reuters) - South Africa handed an opportunity for test debuts to five uncapped players who were named on Friday for the two-test series in Zimbabwe later this month. Several senior players are to be rested for the two tests in Bulawayo with coach Shukri Conrad picking a 16-player squad to be led by captain Temba Bavuma. There is a first call-up for the batting duo Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Lesego Senokwane and fast bowler Codi Yusuf while hard-hitting Dewald Brevis and off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen return to the squad in search of a first cap. The 19-year-old Pretorius had a breakout domestic season in both first-class and Twenty20. He struck three centuries in five first-class games at an average of 72.66, while Senokwane, 28, was a significant run scorer in the Cricket South Africa 4-day competition. The 27-year-old Yusuf finished the domestic season with a bowling average of 22.39. The squad also sees the recall of batsman Zubayr Hamza, who last played a test against New Zealand in early 2024. Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs will be rested for the Zimbabwe trip while the fast bowling trio of Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee and Lizaad Williams were not considered for selection because of fitness issues.
