Lambourn wins English Derby to give trainer Aidan O'Brien his 11th victory at the classic
EPSOM, England (AP) — Lambourn raced away from the pack to win the English Derby on Saturday, giving Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien his 11th win at the classic race.
Lambourn set the pace early and then pulled away down the final stretch to win by about 3 1/2 lenghts. The 3-year-old colt, ridden by Wayne Lordan, entered the race at 13-2 after losing to 2-1 favorite Delacroix at Leopardstown in March. But Delacroix never looked like challenging this time and finished ninth.
Lazy Griff (50-1) was second and Tennessee Stud came third.
It was O'Brien's third consecutive win at the showpiece race.
'Wayne gave him him an incredible ride,' O'Brien said. 'Everybody knew what he was going to do, he's very straightforward, Wayne knew he'd stay so he went forward.'
Lambourn was sired by 2014 Derby winner Australia, who in turn was sired by 2001 victor Galileo.
'It's incredible for everyone that we trained Australia to win the Derby and his sire as well, Galileo. I'm just a small part of it, everybody puts in so much, I can't tell you what a privelege it is,' O'Brien said. 'Australia was a great Derby winner and his horses are so straightforward, just like him.'

The Razorbacks' Cam Kozeal scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Tennessee starter Marcus Phillips (4-5) allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Tennessee (46-18) is making its fifth straight super regional appearance. Arkansas (47-13) is making its third appearance since 2021. Aussie remains in hunt for first LPGA Tour title
Australia's Robyn Choi is just three shots off the lead heading into the final round of the rain-affected LPGA Classic in New Jersey. Starting her Saturday in a tie for 20th, the 27-year-old from the Gold Coast enjoyed birdies on holes three through six, plus on the ninth, 17th and 18th. Bogeys on 15 and 16 saw her card a five-under 66 to sit in a tie for sixth at eight under, while compatriot Karis Davidson (68) is a further three shots back. They're both chasing Ilhee Lee, who shot a three-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over four players into the third round. Tied for the first-round lead with Elizabeth Szokol after a 63, Lee rebounded from a double bogey on the par-4 eighth with a closing birdie on the par-5 ninth. The 36-year-old South Korean had an 11-under 131 total on Seaview's Bay Course. "Today was totally different day, completely different day, and I knew it was going to be completely different day, so I didn't have any expectations," Lee, who won the 2013 Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic for her lone tour title, said. "Just like I did yesterday, I was just playing golf. Have fun out there. Made some birdies on first nine." 'Not happy': Fans react amid sad news around Tony Squires and Candice Warner
Fans are expressing their sadness after it was revealed on Saturday that long-running sports program 'The Back Page' has been axed after 29 years. Tony Squires, who has hosted the show on Fox Sports for the last 12 years, confirmed the sad news but admitted he wasn't surprised. The sport talk-show has been running since 1997, but will wrap up for good after three more episodes. 'Ironically, I wrote a story in 2021 saying television shows don't usually last 25 years,' Squires told . 'They're like animals on the Savannah - very few of them die of old age. 'There's always something young and exciting with big nasty teeth, coming to get them. Well, The Back Page is now 29 years old, I've been hosting it for almost 13 years ... and we've been got. To be honest, it wasn't a shock.' The late, great Mike Gibson was the show's first host back in 1997, and held the role up until 2012. Peter FitzSimons, Billy Birmingham, Tracey Holmes and Jeff Wells were the panellists when it first began, and in recent times it regularly featured journalist Robert Craddock, ironwoman Candice Warner, NRL legend Greg Alexander and AFL great Brad Johnson. Warner, the wife of Aussie cricket great David, became a weekly panellist in 2022 and used the show as a launching pad for her burgeoning media career. Former AFL player-turned-radio host Ryan Fitzgerald was also a regular panellist, as were Socceroos legends Robbie Slater and Mark Bosnich.
