Amid rising tensions in downtown Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass has declared a local emergency and imposed a curfew in specific areas. The move comes as large crowds gather to protest recent actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In a post on X, the Mayor urged residents to stay safe and avoid the affected downtown zones during the curfew period.

Curfew schedule announced: The curfew will be in effect from 8:00 PM PDT on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, until 6:00 AM PDT on Wednesday, June 11, 2025
Areas under curfew: The curfew applies to specific areas in downtown Los Angeles. Mayor Bass stated that it covers a one-square-mile zone stretching from the 5 Freeway to the 110 Freeway, and from the 10 Freeway up to the point where the 110 and 5 merge.
Official guidelines for residents: The city has also ordered all non-essential businesses in the affected area to close by 8:00 PM. Public gatherings, including protests, are not allowed during curfew hours. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), along with 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard troops, will be enforcing the restrictions.
The protests began after ICE conducted surprise raids on businesses accused of hiring undocumented immigrants. The raids led to the detention of several individuals, including foreign nationals from Mexico and Indonesia, sparking widespread anger and demonstrations across the city.
While many protests remained peaceful, some turned violent, resulting in property damage, looting, and confrontations with police.
In response, Mayor Bass decided to impose the curfew to maintain public safety.
California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the federal government's decision to send in military forces, calling it dangerous and undemocratic. President Donald Trump defended the move, saying it was necessary to restore order and even mentioned the possibility of using the Insurrection Act if the situation worsens.
Several foreign governments, including those of China, Indonesia, Japan, and the United Kingdom, have issued travel advisories for their citizens in Los Angeles, urging them to stay indoors and avoid large gatherings.
Residents are advised to follow curfew guidelines and monitor official updates through government channels and Mayor Bass's social media posts.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu urging him to lift the ban on the entry of totapuri mangoes from the neighbouring states into Chittoor district. The adjoining Kolar district in Karnataka is a large grower of totapuri variety of mangoes, and large quantities food processing units in Chittoor district buy large quantities of them. With Chittoor district reporting a bumper totapuri production leading to a price crash and leaving growers in distress, the AP government has imposed curbs on imports of totapuri from other states into the district. The AP government has also deployed officials at inter-state check-posts to prevent entry of totapuri into the state. 'This abrupt and unilateral move has caused considerable hardship to mango growers in Karnataka, particularly those in the border regions who cultivate totapuri mangoes in substantial quantities. These farmers have long relied on the robust linkages with Chittoor-based processing and pulp extraction units for marketing their produce. The current restriction has disrupted this well-established supply chain and threatens significant post-harvest losses, directly impacting the livelihoods of thousands of farmers,' Siddaramaiah said in his letter. Actions of this type taken without prior consultation run contrary to the spirit of cooperative federalism. 'I am also concerned that this may lead to avoidable tension and retaliatory measures, with stakeholders already expressing discontent that could potentially disrupt the inter-state movement of vegetables and other agricultural commodities,' the CM said.
