Lauren James ‘never doubted' she would make England's Euro 2025 squad despite hamstring injury

Lauren James says she never doubted that she would make England's 2025 European Championship squad despite being sidelined since April with a hamstring injury.
James, 23, was pictured back in full training on Monday after missing Chelsea's final seven matches of the campaign and England's Nations League fixtures in May and June due to the injury sustained during the Lionesses' win over Belgium in April.

She was included in Sarina Wiegman's 23-player squad for Euro 2025 and the England head coach insisted her selection was 'not a risk'.
'I feel good,' James told reporters on Tuesday. 'I must be myself if I'm back here.'
Asked if her place at the Euros was ever in doubt, she replied: 'I never really doubted myself, because I think as soon as you have a doubt in your head, then it's always negative thoughts. I always had in my head that I was going to make it. Obviously I didn't tell people that.
'I took it day by day. Lucy (Bronze) and I always kept in touch. She always would say, 'You'll be there.' Then obviously having that support, it always makes you kind of think, 'Oh, yeah, I'll be there as well'.'

James was restricted to nine Women's Super League appearances during the 2024-25 campaign, after also being sidelined with a calf injury between October and January.
She admitted a frustration at having her season disrupted but said she benefitted from taking herself out of the public eye as she recovered.
'Obviously, it's frustrating having injuries,' James added. 'I've had two not-so-short, but not long-term injuries this year. It was a bit of a stop-start, but I just stay around my circle, stay around good people and positivity, and take myself out of the spotlight.'
'Yeah, for sure (I benefitted from stepping out of the spotlight),' she continued. 'I think not having the world talk about you allows you to focus and you're not seeing the news all the time.'
England play Jamaica in their final pre-Euro 2025 fixture on June 29.

LeBron James Confirms 2028 Olympic Plan for Team USA

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Los Angeles Lakers superstar and future Hall of Famer LeBron James has done it all over the course of his legendary career. More LeBron James news: Lakers' LeBron James Provides Crucial Update on Knee Injury Now 40 years old, James has checked nearly every box imaginable. There's no denying he's much closer to the finish line than the starting point. Barring any surprises, he'll soon be entering what would be his 23rd NBA season. James' time in basketball is winding down, and with that comes a ton of speculation on when he will call his career quits. Many suspect that this upcoming season could be the final season of his career, and if it is, it will be quite the ride. The four-time champion has not only had success in the NBA but also in the international game. James has appeared in four Olympic Games and has come away with three gold medals, including one last year in the Paris Games. His NBA future is not only in question, but his Olympic future is also in doubt. James will be 43 years old by the time the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games come around, and the odds of James playing are zero. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, James dismissed the idea of playing in the 2028 Games. More Photo by"Nothing has changed. Where we at, man, 2025 right now?" LeBron said. "Nah, nothing has changed. I mean, if I had to look at it right now through a microscope, I would say that, me being able to support Team USA for the rest of my life — that's for sure. But me actually going on and playing, I don't see it happening. I've given everything that I have, and I will always be appreciative and loyal and dedicated to Team USA and USA Basketball." Last year likely marked the end of LeBron James's storied international career—and what a run it was. James is one of just three American men to compete in at least three Olympics, joining Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant. That same trio also stands alone as the only U.S. players to win three Olympic gold medals. Across 79 appearances for Team USA, James tallied 1,137 points (14.4 per game), 342 rebounds (4.3), 308 assists (3.9), and 122 steals (1.5), cementing his legacy as one of the greatest to ever wear the red, white, and blue. Last season alone, James won the NBA MVP and was a part of the Olympic All-Star Five at the ripe age of 39. Atlético Madrid identify new defensive transfer target

The board at La Liga giants Atlético Madrid have identified a new target in their ongoing search for reinforcements at the back for next season. That's according to Mundo Deportivo, citing transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri, who point towards Arthur Theate as the player in question. Advertisement It is of course common knowledge at this point that Atlético are on the lookout for fresh blood in defence this summer. Sitting atop the shortlist of the Rojiblancos is Tottenham Hotspur stalwart Cristian Romero. Aware that the World Cup winner is likely to command a premium sum, however, Diego Simeone and co. have also earmarked a number of alternative targets. And as alluded to above, this week, one such player's identity has been revealed. As per a report from MD: 'A new name has emerged to strengthen Atlético's defense. It's Arthur Theate, a 25-year-old Belgian center back who can also play at left back and currently plays for Eintracht Frankfurt. Journalist Sacha Tovalieri claims that Atlético have asked the German club about the situation.' Theate, for his part, is valued at €24 million by market experts transfermarkt. Conor Laird – GSFN

Chelsea 2-0 LAFC: Delap assists in debut, Blues kick off Club World Cup with win

Liam Delap picked up an assist on his Chelsea debut as the Blues began their 2025 Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over MLS side Los Angeles FC, in front of a scant crowd of 22,137 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (capacity: 71,000) on Monday. MORE — Club World Cup schedule & results Delap, who signed from Ipswich Town for $40 million this summer, came off the bench in the 64th minute and had his first goal involvement 15 minutes into his first game. The 22-year-old striker got on the end of Cole Palmer's through ball on the right flank, and lifted and curled a perfect cross into the path of Enzo Fernandez at the top of the six. The pass looked easy — it wasn't — but the finish certainly was, as Fernandez received the ball and poked it past Hugo Lloris without any defensive pressure. That goal only made it 2-0 in the 79th minute, but Chelsea had been ahead since the 34th. Pedro Neto timed his run in behind LAFC's defense to perfection and Nicolas Jackson got the ball away just in time. Neto raced into the penalty area, cut inside and beat Lloris at his near post. The victory puts Chelsea top of Group D before Flamengo (Brazil) and ES Tunis (Tunisia) play later on Monday. Chelsea will be back in action against Flamengo on Friday (2 pm ET), and LAFC will face ES Tunis at 6 pm ET. Their focus now switches to the Club World Cup, where they will be among the favorites to win it all. Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez will all play starring roles, while new signing Liam Delap aims to hit the ground running and grab the starting No. 9 spot. LAFC beat Club America in a play-off to qualify for this tournament after Club Leon were barred from entering the competition due to ownership rules with their ownership group also owning Pachuca. Steve Cherundolo's LAFC are extremely dangerous on the counter attack and have some very exciting young players, as well as a sprinkling of veterans in Olivier Giroud, Hugo Lloris and Ryan Hollingshead. LAFC are flying the MLS flag in this competition along with the Seattle Sounders and Inter Miami, and American soccer fans hope the trio can cause plenty of upsets along the way against club giants from across the globe. Chelsea team news, focus New Chelsea signings Liam Delap, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr could all make their debuts, as Enzo Maresca is going to go all out to win this competition. Most of Chelsea's players have only just linked up with the squad after international duty, so it will be intriguing to see who is given a bit of a break at the start of the tournament. OUT: Wesley Fofana (hamstring), Mykhailo Mudryk (suspended) LAFC team news, focus Speaking ahead of the match, LAFC's general manager John Thorrington was excited about the challenge but realistic about the chances of the MLS side causing a huge upset: 'I think it is right to view us as underdogs... What I hope that Chelsea and Flamengo and Tunis and all these teams – I hope they walk off the field with a great level of respect as to the quality of our players and the intensity and the commitment of our players. And if we walk off the pitch every game with that, we will be proud and I trust that the results will fall our way.' Olivier Giroud will feature up top LAFC against his former club, while goalkeeper Hugo Lloris knows Chelsea extremely well from his decade at their rivals Spurs. Watch out for Denis Bouanga, Yaw Yeboah and Timothy Tillman. Chelsea vs LAFC prediction This feels like it's going to be a lot closer than most people think but Chelsea's quality, probably off the bench, will make the difference in the end. Chelsea 2-1 LAFC.
