7 Alawites missing in Damascus amid rising tensions
Shafaq News/ Seven Syrian citizens from the Alawite community have disappeared in Damascus, stirring concerns over their fate and casting a fresh spotlight on the challenges faced by Syria's Alawite minority since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Sunday that the missing individuals were last seen returning from work at a restaurant in Qasioun Mall, Barzeh district. Activists reported losing contact with them around 3 a.m. when their daily transport vehicle entered Ash al-Warwar neighborhood, an Alawite stronghold in the capital. Later that morning, the vehicle was found abandoned near the Police Hospital along the international highway, with no trace of them. Since al-Assad's ouster, Syria's Alawite community has faced intensified violence, political marginalization, and economic decline. The Alawites, once a pillar of al-Assad's security apparatus, have found themselves vulnerable to retribution and systemic challenges. Reports indicate that more than 1,383 Alawite civilians have been killed in retaliatory attacks since the regime's collapse. Thousands more have fled traditional strongholds in Latakia and Tartus, fearing reprisals from armed opposition groups. Alawite religious sites have also been targeted, including the torching of the revered shrine of al-Khasibi in Aleppo, sparking protests in Alawite-majority areas.

Ukraine unleashes massive drone attack on Russian airbases
Shafaq News/ Ukrainian intelligence services launched a large-scale drone attack on Sunday targeting multiple Russian military airbases, marking the most extensive assault of its kind since the war began in February 2022. Ukrainian officials said the coordinated operation—code-named 'Spider's Web'—struck four Russian airbases and destroyed or damaged at least 41 strategic bombers. According to Kyiv, the mission was personally overseen by President Volodymyr Zelensky and Vasyl Maliuk, head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), and had been in preparation for over 18 months. To evade detection, the drones were reportedly concealed in wooden sheds mounted on trucks, which were then transported deep into Russian territory. A remote-control mechanism lifted the shed roofs, allowing the drones to launch toward their designated targets. The Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed drone attacks across five regions—Irkutsk, Murmansk, Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur—and said most were intercepted. However, strikes in Irkutsk and Murmansk caused fires that damaged several aircraft. No casualties were reported, and Russian authorities say suspects have been detained in connection with the incidents. Meanwhile, Ukraine's Air Force reported that Russia conducted its largest drone strike on Ukrainian territory overnight, launching 472 drones and seven missiles. Ukrainian officials said this attack is part of a sharp escalation in Russian aerial operations over the past two weeks. Separately, in Russia's Bryansk region, a highway bridge was reportedly destroyed in an explosion as a passenger train carrying nearly 400 people was crossing. Seven people were killed and dozens were injured. Russian authorities have not officially attributed blame but are treating the incident as a suspected act of terrorism. The escalation on both sides comes just one day before Ukrainian and Russian delegations are set to meet in Istanbul for a new round of direct peace talks hosted by Turkiye. President Zelensky said on Sunday that Ukraine's key priorities include an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, the return of all prisoners, and the repatriation of Ukrainian children allegedly taken to Russia during the war. I heard reports from the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the General Staff, our intelligence agencies, and the Security Service of Ukraine. Our defense, our active actions, and our are doing everything to protect our independence,… — Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) June 1, 2025 Moscow has confirmed its participation in the talks but has not disclosed its negotiating terms. President Vladimir Putin has rejected Ankara's proposal to elevate the meeting to a presidential level.

Engineers, police trade accusations after Basra protest turns violent
Shafaq News/ On Sunday, clashes erupted between protesting engineering graduates demanding employment and Iraqi security forces outside the Basra Oil Company headquarters. In a statement to Shafaq News Agency, the Basra Engineers Syndicate described the incident as 'unjustified assaults' by security personnel on peaceful protesters, reporting cases of physical and verbal abuse. The syndicate urged authorities to hold those responsible accountable and take measures to prevent similar incidents. It also demanded the release of any detainees, warning that legal action would be pursued over what it described as a blatant violation of human rights and legally guaranteed freedoms. 'Addressing the protesters' demands—rather than silencing them—is the proper path to justice and stability.' Meanwhile, Basra Police announced in a statement that one of its officers sustained a serious eye injury and a broken nose while performing his duties to protect demonstrators, adding that the situation was handled under legal protocols to restore order and maintain public safety. It also confirmed that legal measures were taken against officers who responded with unauthorized use of force, 'in line with professional discipline and official guidelines.'
