Ace of Base, the creators of some of the most memorable Europop tunes of the 90s, have a history as colourful as their music. Their journey, from modest beginnings in Sweden to encounters with gangland threats and even an unsuccessful Eurovision bid, is nothing short of a rollercoaster ride...
The electro-pop outfit hailing from Scandinavia was born in Gothenburg in 1987, comprising siblings Jonas, Linn and Jenny Berggren, with Ulf Ekberg rounding off the quartet.
Starting out in the local club scene, the group initially found it tough to make their mark, given the Swedes' preference for heavy metal—a stark contrast to their techno beats. However, their fortunes changed when their single, Wheel of Fortune, hit the charts, paving the way for their next release, All that She Wants, to catapult them to global stardom.
The track went platinum and dominated the UK charts for three consecutive weeks in 1993.

Their winning streak continued with hits like The Sign, becoming a club anthem worldwide in the early 90s. But, as quickly as they ascended to fame, they faded into obscurity just as swiftly, reports the Daily Record.
The last sighting of the group was during a series of concerts between 2007 and 2009, where they performed as a trio without Linn. Since then, the original band members have all embarked on vastly different journeys.
Jenny Berggren
Jenny, a former member of the band who left in the late 00s, was the only one to pursue a solo music career and also ventured into writing. In 2009, she penned her autobiography Vinna hela världen, which translates to 'To Win the World' in English; however, a translated version never saw publication.
Her solo musical journey began in 2010 with the release of her single, Here I Am, which peaked at number 14 on the Swedish charts. She followed up with another single, Gotta Go, and her debut album, My Story, within the same year.

Additionally, Jenny made an attempt to represent Denmark at the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest with her track, Let Your Heart B Mine, but did not secure the nomination. In 2024, she joined Ulf in the documentary, Ace of Base: All That She Wants, which delved into the band's history.
During the programme, she shared a harrowing incident from the early '90s when an intruder broke into her home and threatened her with a knife.
Reflecting on the terrifying event in an interview with People, Jenny remarked: "I think that was when the star was born in me. I wanted to sing. I had to calculate with all the dangers, and I just realised, 'No, I want to sing. This is what I want'."
Ulf Ekberg
Ulf Ekberg has since shifted his focus to nurturing tech start-ups in Sweden. In a conversation with ABC, the ex-musician observed: "There's so many tech companies in Sweden, especially Stockholm.
"I'm interested in creating a sector in technology and music. I'm building companies, and it's been a fantastic last five years. It feels like everything is exploding here. We are in a lot of different sectors, but we try to keep it to the creative sectors as much as possible; movies, TV, music and entertainment, which are obviously very close to my heart."

In the documentary from the previous year, Ulf also reflects on his past association with a far-right extremist gang in Sweden during his teenage years, expressing profound remorse for this period in his life. In an interview with People, he elaborated: "I think it's a very important topic to talk about because it is a very angry world we live in right now. It's much more angry than when I was a teenager."
He continued, sharing his hope that his story could inspire others: "I hope that maybe that part of this documentary can show that even if you are completely lost, you can always find your way and it's never too late - which, I was blessed with a second chance in my life."
Jonas and Linn Berggren
Post-band life has seen Jonas and Linn Berggren retreat from the limelight, with Linn particularly shunning public attention. Jonas briefly resurfaced at an event featured towards the end of the documentary, whereas Linn opted to contribute through a letter, which Jenny reads out in the concluding episode.
However, the band did reunite for a one-off gig on their 30th anniversary. Much to the joy of numerous fans, they returned to headline the 90s Nostalgic Electric Circus festival in Canada, donning black lace and flower-inspired attire.

Will Ferrell to bring Eurovision musical to Broadway
Will Ferrell is set to turn his 2020 comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga into a Broadway musical. The actor starred in and co-wrote the Netflix film with Harper Steele and the pair will develop the show with Anthony King, whose Broadway credits include Beetlejuice and Gutenberg! The Musical!. There is no timeline yet to the production. 'We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway,' Ferrell said in a statement. 'The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.' The film was released on Netflix in June 2020 and followed a pair of Icelandic singers, played by Ferrell and Rachel McAdams, as they took part in Eurovision. It received an Oscar nomination for best original song. It received mixed reviews upon release with the Guardian's Peter Bradshaw calling it 'a strange, tonally misfiring movie'. 'This is a stellar team for what I am sure will be an equally stellar adaption of a film the world loved,' said Martin Green, CBE director of the Eurovision Song Contest. 'Our aim always is to bring the joy of the Eurovision Song Contest to more people globally – especially as we approach our 70th edition in 2026.' The show will be directed by Alex Timber who is currently behind the Tony-nominated Bobby Darin musical Just in Time. This year's Eurovision Song Contest was watched by 166 million people worldwide. Ferrell and Steele recently starred in the acclaimed documentary Will & Harper, a road trip documentary about their friendship. Ferrell also starred in comedy You're Cordially Invited earlier this year and is currently filming comedy Judgment Day with Zac Efron and Regina Hall.

We live in ‘UK's most BORING seaside town' with barren, deck chair-less beaches & no arcade in site… but celebs love it
The picturesque port town has been branded the "Costa del Dull" BEACH BORE We live in 'UK's most BORING seaside town' with barren, deck chair-less beaches & no arcade in site… but celebs love it Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A HISTORIC seaside town has been voted the "most boring" in the UK because its pier is too short and it lacks classic beach attractions. Despite featuring in a host of BBC shows, the village's barren Victorian-era jetty finished bottom of a national seaside league table. At the end of the town's pier, instead of arcades and ice cream, there lies a small collection of old photos. A recent Telegraph survey of 60 seaside piers across the country awarded points for attractions on offer and how far they stretch out into sea. Winning town Southend-on-Sea, which has previously been dubbed the "British Miami", scored 540 points. But Kilcreggan, which is located on the "Costa del Dull", limped in last with just 78 points. The league table has caused fury among locals, including Bargain Hunt presenter Roo Irvine, who have come out swinging in defence of their home village. The Beeb star's antique shop sits across the road from the town's jetty, which is just 63 yards long. Roo defended the pier's crucial location, which acts as a vital transportation hub to access neighbouring villages, including Gourock. Blasting the pier's low score, she fumed: "Kilcreggan is good for the soul. "Ours is not your traditional seaside pier so no surprise it got a low score. The UK's best beach bar – with DJ sets, sunset views and signature cocktails 'But there are no towels on deckchairs here, and even the seagulls are friendlier. 'It's a Victorian pier in full working order, which is credit to how well it's been maintained. 'This beautiful village still has a pub, café, post office, butcher's and doctor's. 'Kilcreggan pier has its own place and reason for being. 'What other pier means you can get across for a day out in the town in just 13 minutes, saving you a three-hour round trip in the car? "It's keeping our peninsulas connected.' The pier is also used as a backdrop for the movie Borges And Me, starring Bond baddie and X-Men actor Alan Cumming, which was released in December last year. Holidaymaker Jenny Park hailed the port for being "untainted". She added: 'It's a functioning pier that does its job. 'I don't know what else it's supposed to do, but maybe a refreshment kiosk would improve it. "I grew up going to tacky piers like Skegness, which I didn't like. "Kilcreggan's brings you to a nice little place – it's got its charm and is untainted.' The winning pier, in Essex town Southend-on-Sea, stretches more than a mile into sea. Hotels in the area have opened their doors to some of the UK's most popular TV personalities. Earlier this year, Fool Me Once star Michelle Keegan was spotted there with her husband Mark Wright and their baby, Palma. The Netflix actress spent her first Mother's Day as a mum at the Roslin Beach Hotel on Thorpe Bay. It has also hosted Gary Barlow, Tyson Fury, Denise van Outen, and TOWIE stars including Frankie Essex. And locals have left glowing reviews of the idyllic beach town where VIPs are spotted on the regular. 8 Southend-on-Sea's pier stretches more than a mile into sea Credit: Getty 8 Hotels in the area have opened their doors to some of the UK's most popular TV personalities Credit: Getty 8 VIPs are regularly spotted in the idyllic seaside town Credit: Getty They are no strangers to stardom as it's scenic landscape makes it a highly sought-after area for film sets. From The Walking Dead to Wonder Woman, the hometown of Helen Mirren has almost made it on the big screen as much as those who hang out there. Recently West Ham star Michail Antonio was spotted filming an advert near the pier.

Sir Alex Ferguson slapped Man Utd wonderkid on the head and walked off after chat about Barcelona's transfer interest
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FORMER Manchester United wonderkid Febian Brandy turned down the chance to sign for Barcelona after a cheeky slap on the head from Sir Alex Ferguson. Brandy, 36, never broke into the first team at Old Trafford after nearly 15 years on the books - but things could have been very different. 6 Febian Brandy was one of Manchester United's top-rated talents in the 2000s Credit: Getty 6 Brandy (bottom row, second on the left) played alongside big names at United Credit: Getty Images - Getty He was considered one of the best youngsters around when he was coming through the ranks in the mid 2000s. And his reputation spanned across Europe too, as both Real Madrid and Barcelona were keen on trying to snatch him away from the Red Devils as a teenager. Barcelona were so impressed by Brandy's efforts in a youth tournament that they lodged a £1MILLION bid for the youngster. The offer was rejected by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson following a slap on the head and a chat in the hallway about being loyal to his local club. READ MORE ON MAN UTD CAN'T TAKE ANY MOR Amorim vows to QUIT Man Utd if horror woes continue after West Ham loss Manchester-born Brandy told SunSport: "We went to a few tournaments when we were 14 to 16 years old. "One of the tournaments that sticks out was one in Spain. In the tournament there was teams like Real Madrid, PSG, Ajax, Barcelona - all the top European teams. "We didn't qualify out of the group stages, but I must have had a worldie of a tournament because I ended up getting player of the tournament. 'About two weeks after the tournament, some Spanish guy - I don't know how he got the number - rang my mum and dad's house phone. 6 Brandy spent nearly 15 years on the books at Sir Alex Ferguson's Man Utd Credit: Febian Brandy Join SUN CLUB for the Man Utd Files every Thursday plus in-depth coverage and exclusives from Old Trafford "My mum picked up and he said 'we're interested in your son Fabien.' 'About two weeks later I went into training and Sir Alex Ferguson walked past me in the corridor and said 'have you heard?'. "I had a feeling what he was talking about, but you have to be respectful so I played dumb. He said 'Barcelona are interested in you, what are your thoughts?' 'I said, 'Listen, boss. I'm a local lad. I'm from Manchester and I see my career here, this is the place that I want to be'. Then he just slapped me on the head, called me a good lad and walked away. 'Things started to come to fruition in the weeks that followed, and I think they [Barca] made a £1million bid which obviously Sir Alex rejected and I didn't hear anything of it from then.' That decision meant that Brandy stayed put until 2010, leaving as a 22-year-old in search of a new challenge after coming up through the youth ranks alongside the likes of Ravel Morrison, Jonny Evans and Danny Welbeck. Brandy had gone from training with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville - players he recalls being like "big brothers" to him - to trying to find his next club and the next step in his career in the lower leagues. He had lined up a deal with Sheffield United in the Championship, but broke his metatarsal in the last minute of his last game for Man Utd's reserves - scuppering the move. From there injuries meant Brandy was never able to settle at one club, kickstarting a journeyman-like career that saw him play in Greece and Thailand as well as for the likes of Sheffield United, Rotherham and Rochdale. People ask 'should I have signed for Barcelona?' Don't get me wrong, the weather would have been nicer, but I've got no regrets. Febian Brandy That journey - which included 16 different clubs - ended in 2017 with non-league outfit Ebbsfleet, but Brandy has no regrets over turning down Barcelona. He said: "I always saw myself playing for Man Utd, I didn't really know anything else. I only really knew Man Utd and England. So when it did come to an end it was hard, I was upset. 'But I thought to myself, for my career, this has to happen. I didn't want to be one of those players that was 23/24 and signing contracts just to be at a big club. "I wanted to go and make a name for myself elsewhere. I was obviously upset, but it was something that had to be done. 'People ask 'should I have signed for Barcelona?'. Don't get me wrong, the weather would have been nicer, but I've got no regrets. 'There's probably a few things I took for granted. Doing extra in the gym and making myself the best footballer I could have been. "I had a lot of injuries and there's things like that that I could have done better to have a better career. Other than that, I have no regrets.' 6 Brandy moved to Sheffield United later in his career Credit: Blades 6 The forward also represented England at youth level Credit: Getty One of the big reasons for Brandy being left with no regrets is that it was his Man Utd exit that led him to his latest venture - Skouted. Brandy launched Skouted when his career came to an end, an app that helps unattached players find new clubs and clubs find the best new talent. The app, which allows young players to upload clips of themselves playing for top clubs to browse through, has already helped in excess of 300 youngsters earn trials. Had Brandy not embarked on his journey through the leagues, then he may never have started the app. He explained: "When I was in my late 20s I had been battling with so many injuries and I started to think about my future. "I didn't really want to be a coach or a manager. That's when I started to put Skouted in place. 'I've always had an entrepreneurial mindset and I think what really triggered it was that when I was at Man Utd, I was pretty fortunate to be there as long as I was. "I was fortunate to get a contract every year from the age of eight until I was 22. 'I had friends that might not have been good enough to make it at Man Utd, but they might have been able to go and play at a lesser club. "But when they got released their parents or their guardians didn't have the connections to pick up the phone to someone in the Championship or League One and ask for a trial. 'That's when I thought to myself, 'I need to create something that's going to bridge that gap between players and clubs'. "Something where football clubs can find these players and players have got a platform to present themselves in front of these football clubs.'
