LOS ANGELES – A day after Landon Donovan lambasted members of the US men's national team who decided to skip this summer's friendlies and CONCACAF Gold Cup, midfielder Weston McKennie came to the defence of his teammates.
Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson and Yunus Musah are among the USMNT mainstays who are not with the team, ostensibly to rest after the European season.
The national squad are also missing numerous other players due to injury or involvement in the upcoming Club World Cup, where McKennie is set to compete with Juventus.
While lauding Cristiano Ronaldo for helping lead Portugal to the Uefa Nations League championship on June 8 with a win over Spain, Donovan took a shot at the current USMNT absentees.
'This is what it means to represent your country,' he said, speaking of Ronaldo on the Fox broadcast in which he was a pundit for the final.
'This is what it means. And if you don't want to take this as a professional soccer player, as someone who gets the opportunity to wear that jersey and take it seriously and responsibly, then don't come in. This is what it means.
'(Ronaldo is) 40 years old. He's played a long-ass season. He's tired. He's out there grinding. Hurt himself in the process, and I can't help but think about some of our guys on vacation, not wanting to play in the Gold Cup. It's pissing me off.'
The US team just took a third consecutive loss, falling 2-1 to Turkey on June 7 in a friendly at East Hartford, Conn.
McKennie was asked about Donovan's comments by USA Today Sports on June 9 in Italy, where he is in training with Juventus.
'Obviously, none of us take for granted playing for the national team,' he said. 'None of us want to lose games. All of us want to compete.'
McKennie added about Donovan's remarks: 'No names were named. Coming off a long season, a stressful season, obviously, some players feel a different way about it, and some players feel another way.
'But the comments are comments. Everyone has their own opinions, and that's life, and that's football.
'Obviously, like I said before, none of us take for granted that we get to represent a national team because it's one of the biggest honours that we can have in the sport of football.
'So, any chance that we get, we want to play. But obviously, if you don't feel like your body is in the right condition, and you don't feel like your body is in the best form or shape or whatever, to be able to do that at 100 per cent, and you feel like you're risking injury, then it's better to let someone else go in that is completely 100 per cent.'
Also on June 9, Mark Pulisic, Christian's father, posted on Instagram a ChatGPT summary of the time when Donovan took a sabbatical from playing in 2012-13.
'Landon Donovan took his sabbatical because he was feeling both physically and mentally exhausted after years of intense competition and the pressure that comes with being a top athlete,' the AI programme said in a response to the prompt.
'He'd been playing professionally from a young age and had participated in multiple World Cups, so he felt the need to step back and take some time for himself. This break allowed him to rest, travel, and ultimately return to the game with a refreshed mindset.'
Christian Pulisic 'liked' his father's post.
However, Donovan is not alone in being critical of Pulisic's decision with former US great Alexi Lalas levelling similar criticisms, saying the team need as much playing time together as they can get with the World Cup coming to the US, Mexico and Canada in 2026. REUTERS

Belgian club Leuven dismiss former Wales manager Coleman

Former Wales manager Chris Coleman has been fired by OH Leuven six months after joining them, the Belgian club said. The former Wales defender was appointed in December by Leuven, whose owners also control Leicester City, and he led them to an 11th-place finish, enough to qualify for playoffs for a potential spot in European club competition next season. "In those playoffs, the performances remained below expectations. That is why the club is now opting for change with a view to next season and is ending the collaboration with Coleman," Leuven said in a statement. Coleman, 55, took Wales to the European Championship semi-finals in 2016. He also managed English clubs Fulham, Sunderland and Coventry City, and Spain's Real Sociedad. Fiji name strong squad for Australia and Scotland tests

Fiji coach Mick Byrne promised Australia and Scotland tough tests after naming a strong squad featuring 15 European-based players for the July clashes with the tier-one nations on Pacific islanders will play the Wallabies in Newcastle on July 6 in Australia's only warm-up match for the British & Irish Lions test series before hosting the Scots in Suva the following weekend. "We've announced a squad which is as strong as we're able to select, so that's excellent," said Byrne. "We're really looking forward to going over to Australia and putting on a great performance against the Wallabies and then coming home and playing against Scotland. "Both Australia and Scotland are established tier-one sides, and we know the level we need to rise to. This squad reflects our depth, strength, and we will give a performance that will make all Fijians proud." New Zealand-born former All Blacks sevens winger Salesi Rayasi, who now plays for French club RC Vannes, was included for the first time after switching national allegiance. His father Filipe played 13 times for Fiji in the 1990s. Alongside the 10 players who play their club rugby in France and five in England, the 32-man squad features a core of 13 players from the Fijian Drua Super Rugby team. "We've focused on combinations that give us both tactical adaptability and the trademark Fijian spirit," Byrne said. "We want to win – but more importantly, we want to win playing our brand of rugby." Australian Byrne, who coached the Drua until last year, said Fiji's likely inclusion in the Nations Cup meant they needed to start thinking and acting like a tier-one country. "We now need to step up as an organisation and a group of players and address the fact that we are now tier one," he added. Fiji squad: Forwards - Eroni Mawi, Luke Tagi, Haereiti Hetet, Mesake Doge, Peni Ravai, Tevita Ikanivere, Samuel Mativesi, Kavaia Tagivetaua, Isoa Nasilasila, Mesake Vocevoce, Temo Mayanavanua, Setareki Turagacoke, Viliame Mata, Elia Canakaivata, Lekima Tagitagivalu, Albert Tuisue, Etonia Waqa, Motikai Murray. Backs - Simione Kuruvoli, Philip Baselala, Sam Wye, Caleb Muntz, Isaia Armstrong-Ravula, Vilimoni Botitu, Josua Tuisova, Iosefo Masikau Baleiwairiki, Sireli Maqala, Kalaveti Ravouvou, Ponipate Loganimasi, Jiuta Wainiqolo, Selesitino Ravutaumada, Salesi Rayasi. Five of the stars missing at the Club World Cup

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah is one of the star names to be missing at the Club World Cup. PHOTO: AFP Five of the stars missing at the Club World Cup BARCELONA – Fifa's inaugural expanded Club World Cup in the United States has US$1 billion of prize money on the line but will be missing some of the game's star names. Here are five players who will not be lighting up stadiums across the United States once it gets under way this weekend. 1. Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) Liverpool finished as English champions, but like Spain's Barcelona and Italy's Napoli, will not be at the Club World Cup, because of the convoluted qualification process. That means Egyptian winger Salah, who broke the Premier League record for goal involvements, with 29 strikes and 18 assists, misses out. After a tiring season in which he faded in the latter months, he might not be too upset about a summer off. However it will be a shame that African football icon Salah, captain Virgil van Dijk and others miss out on the chance of a potential rematch against their Champions League conquerors Paris Saint-Germain. Liverpool transfer target Florian Wirtz will also be absent, as his side Bayer Leverkusen did not qualify. 2. Lamine Yamal (Barcelona) No player in world football this season has offered more excitement than Barcelona's 17-year-old star Lamine Yamal. The Spain winger has been in sensational form for his club this season and is one of the candidates to win the Ballon d'Or. His thrilling dribbling and penchant for the spectacular make him one of the biggest draws at the moment. He is often compared to former Barcelona great Lionel Messi, but because of the Spanish champions' absence, may have missed out on his only chance to face the Argentina star, who will be there with Inter Miami. Barcelona's Raphinha, midfield maestro Pedri and veteran striker Robert Lewandowski are others who will be missed. 3. Cristiano Ronaldo (Al Nassr) Messi will also not go up against his long-time rival Ronaldo in the US. The Portuguese striker, 40, was reported to be looking for a way to play in the tournament. Fifa president Gianni Infantino had suggested Ronaldo might move from Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr to a team who had reached the event, saying that 'discussions' were being held over it. Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo, who won the Nations League with Portugal last weekend, indicated after the game, however, he was set to stay at Al Nassr. 'Some teams reached out to me,' the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star revealed on the eve of the Nations League final. 'Some made sense and others did not, but you can't try and do everything. You can't catch every ball.' 4. Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) Champions League semi-finalists Arsenal are another team to miss out and after finishing the season trophyless, the Club World Cup would have been a chance to win some silverware. England international Saka's only club trophy, excluding the FA Community Shield, was an FA Cup win with Arsenal in 2020. Mikel Arteta's side showed this season they have improved to the point where they are in contention for major honours, including knocking out Real Madrid in the Champions League, but came up just short. For a player of his quality, who has spent six seasons playing regularly at the top level, Saka could do with expanding his medal collection. Arsenal will be disappointed to miss out on the prize money too, as they try to overhaul Liverpool and Manchester City, who have dominated the English game in recent seasons. 5. Neymar (Santos) Brazilian icon Neymar struggled with injury at Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia and returned to Santos in January 2025, hoping to get fit and firing ahead of next summer's World Cup. The 33-year-old forward, despite fading with age, is still one of the biggest names in the game and his absence is also a blow in a commercial sense. 'Neymar, what can I say about him? He's an outstanding player, who, for me, in my football cycle, is in the top three, with Cristiano and Messi,' said Brazil midfielder Casemiro. With organisers struggling to sell tickets, Neymar's presence would have been a boon. AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
